Chuck Berry said it best, "C'est la vie, say the old folks, it goes to show you never can tell." I am currently working on a novel that's mostly inspired by a car wreck I saw a year and a half ago, of all things. You don't know what's going to inspire you until it happens.

This happened just last week, so here goes. It was four in the morning. I could not sleep. My legs were sore so I decided to get out of bed and get in the bathtub and soak them for a while. So I'm sitting there, in the bathtub, playing dominoes on my iPhone, and waiting for my calf muscles to stop aching. I am not thinking about writing or anything in this world that's a hundred miles close to writing. All I want is for my body to stop hurting and then... the entire third act of my next novel just falls into place, right there, in my brain, without me having to think hard about it. Just. Like. That.
I do not know how these things happen, but I am grateful to whoever it is that does.

I am working on a sequel to WREATHED, which seems incredibly foolhardy, as only a very few people have actually, you know, read WREATHED. But I have a good idea for the sequel and I'm working on getting it put together.

Writer's block is a myth. Like most myths, it has a resonance beyond what you'd expect. And like most myths, it has exactly as much power over you as you allow it to have.

Write short at first. Save the ten-volume sagas for later. Develop your skills writing short pieces and finishing them and getting them out into the world. That will help build your confidence in your craft (or else it'll show you where you need to improve, which is almost as good).

I got the idea for the plot from an old George Jones song called "He Stopped Loving Her Today." The book's title is WREATHED--the working title was "A Wreath Upon His Door," which is a direct quote from the song. I've loved the song forever, but had largely forgotten about it until George Jones died last spring, and that gave me the idea to base the novel on the song.
