I'll give you Ernest Hemingway's answer to the Short short Story. And, yes it could be considered horror.

This is a good question. I just returned from RWA 2017 conference in Orlando. Great Conference - Soooo Much is changing. Frequently authors do say they refrain from reading in their genre while writing to avoid any cross contamination. I think that is a valid comment. I read in many genre all the time including nonfiction and news/financial magazines as well. And, yes, I do continue to read in my genre of romantic suspense. I am cognizant though of the unconscious potential to contaminate my artistic vision. I would like to think I am able to guard against that cross contamination - but I do look back over my writing with an eye to this issue.

Like most of us in the United States we have grown up near where Native American Tribes once flourished. The bond they formed over hundreds of generations with nature and the land was in many respects incredible. Tony Hillerman experienced the trials and tribulations of the modern day Native Americans as a farm youth. He not only tells a good tale - page turner - with excellent plot and pacing. But, he also goes to the next step and draws the reader into the mysticism that truly defines the Navajo Way. And, harkens back to the Spirts of Honored Ancestors. I recently attempted a similar approach with the Creek from the Panhandle of Florida in my recent release, KINDRED SPIRITS the HEALERS. Thanks for the question - Rory

Tony Hillerman's Navajo Tribal Police Sergeant and acting Lieutenant (always have trouble spelling that word) Jim Chee and his on-again, off-again significant-other Policewoman Bernadette (Bernie) Manuelito. Stress and suspense always magnifies the strengths and flaws in personalities and relationships. When an author can weave that through characters in a mystery or suspense they have created gold from yarn. :o) Rory Church

Mary, Great to hear from you. I have been involved in the Gulf Coast Writers Conference for a few years. It is interesting in that it involves writers of all types - books, music, poetry, screen plays - the works. I live in Panama City and have not gotten too involved with Romance writers in the area just because most of the RWA Chapters are in Tallahassee or meet at times I'm not available. Still working that day job :o) I am certainly interested in a romance writer critique partner or beta reader at the least. I have been a member of RWA for several years (one of the few men). Their courses at the national meeting were awesome - and you can order them on DVD. Keep in touch and good luck with the upcoming work.

A sequel to my Novella published by Black Lyon, HOME BY CHRISTMAS. This is a full length novel set in Germany and is also romantic suspense.
I do have a novel coming from Black Lyon May 2015 involving love and intrigue in the Black Hills of South Dakota - might be a handsome rancher in that story also :o)

I want to be the best I possibly can at the writing craft. I want to entertain and inspire my readers. Here is an example of the pinnacle of the craft. Hemingway was once asked to write a story in six words. Impossible you say - what about this - "For sale, baby shoes, never worn."
I was blown away.
