Maddy Lederman Great question! Books that come to mind immediately are Anne Frank's The Diary of a Young Girl (I get emotional just thinking about it), A Farewell To Arms, by Ernest Hemingway, and The Catcher In The Rye, by J. D. Salinger. All the books in The Hunger Games series were emotional for me as well. Most of the books I enjoy are on some level, and depending on the emotion, that is to a large degree what I enjoy about them. Thanks for asking this question!
Maddy Lederman Thanks for your question, Raelee! I have many, but these are places that belong to everyone and are not just my own: vast, uninhabited areas of the Mojave with nothing but rolling hills and the road running through them. No one can reach you on your cell, and you'd better make sure you have gas, food and water! It's a little scary, but I love the stillness, or when the only activity is the wind. It's like taking a dip into eternity.

Maddy Lederman I was inspired by a couple of things. Constant smart phone use is one of them. Everyone seems to be more and more absorbed in their phones, and I think it's affecting our relationships.
Spending a lot of time in the Mojave Desert also inspired me. There's something calming about this mysterious landscape, and I wanted to share that feeling with people who've never been there, or can't visit long enough for it to really sink in.
I wrote for a local magazine in the desert and, on an unrelated topic, I interviewed a couple who lived like Edna's grandparents, with no cell service, Internet or TV. I wondered how a modern, city kid would handle that environment, and it sparked the idea for my story.
Maddy Lederman I have a sequel to EDNA IN THE DESERT, and two new books on deck.
Maddy Lederman Be tenacious, in both your pursuit of self-expression and your pursuit of a publisher.
Maddy Lederman The privilege of sharing my story. I also enjoy reading reviews. This is my first novel, and I love to learn what people think.
Maddy Lederman I keep writing...anything. I find if I keep writing without judging the outcome, I break out of that rut more quickly than waiting for the perfect inspiration.
