Isabel Quintero I got the idea for Gabi, A Girl in Pieces from a lot of places. A lot who Gabi is, is who I was at her age; though she is a lot braver than I would have been. I was really shy around boys and had a hard time talking to them beyond the realm of friendship. A lot of the story is taken from incidents I knew or heard about in high school, college, as a teacher, and in everyday life, so while the story is entirely fictional, a lot is based on real occurrences.
Isabel Quintero I am not sure how much inspiration plays a role in writing. Sure we are inspired by an event, a beautiful day, a tragedy, a thought, politics, and everything that surrounds us but the thing is you need to sit down and actually write it out, and that is hard work. That said I get inspired by listening to people tell stories, things that happened to them. I love listening to people talk because you find out that everyone has such an exciting history, filled with legends, superstitions, bandits, murderers, outlaws, love, and resilience.
Isabel Quintero I am currently working on a few children's books, and a longer magical realism/fantasy type novel, which might also be YA. Oh, and poetry, I am always working on poetry.
Isabel Quintero Get ready for rejection. It's okay, rejection, as long as you don't take it personal, and you keep going because eventually you will find the perfect match for you and your work, and when that happens, get ready to work harder than you ever have in your life. But don't worry about that either because it's your dream and it's worth it.
Isabel Quintero The best thing about being a writer is creating a space for all voices you carry inside of you.
Isabel Quintero I keep writing. Even if it's crap. Or I cry for a bit and then go get some spicy food, maybe Hot Cheetos, some 7-Up and try again.
