Where did you get the idea for your most recent book?

Simone Zelitch This one actually has a clear answer: I was laying in bed with my husband on morning and suddenly asked, "What if a Jewish State were established in Germany instead of Israel in 1948?" I speculated for a while, and then he went to brush his teeth, came back, and said, "What about the Soviet Union?" This took my book in some pretty complicated directions, as my Jewish State was not embedded in the Cold War, but I never let go of the initial inspiration-- wondering what it meant to actually create a country as a direct answer to the Holocaust.
