I think being an actor helps my writing. When I take on an acting role, I try and live inside that character and really picture all the details of his life. So I try and bring that same kind of detail to my writing. But all that never happens on the first draft. I just wrote a second edition of The Sparks and I had fun adding more content than I did originally. I think you have to hire a professional editor as they will point out areas that need more detail. I also am lucky to have friends that will listen to my ideas and ask questions that often get me thinking. That helps me flush out more details to explore.

Sorry I missed your question. It took me about a year to get published. I ended up going with small, independent publisher because traditional publishing takes so long and I wanted to get the book out in time for college applications. I found my agent by going to a writing conference that let you "speed date" with agents for 15 minutes. It helps to get face to face to pitch your book if you are a new author so I recommend writing conferences. No matter what, hire a professional editor. Friends won't spend the time that a paid editor will to give you very detailed feedback. I got 15 typed pages of comments from my first editor. That kind of feedback is priceless. Good luck!

The best part is is being able to create something and inspire other people. The most gratifying part is making someone feel an emotion that you've created.

The important thing about writer's block is to stop and do something that inspires you. Read, or write something else that you enjoy and pretty soon your ideas will start flowing again.
