M.S. Dobing I was reading a popular science book ("In search of Schrondingers Cat"), and came up with the idea of using quantum physics - specifically the "Observer" effect - on reality to define a system of magic that would work in the modern world. From that one concept I fleshed out a whole history, mythology and of course, a story.
M.S. Dobing An urban fantasy novel that I've been working on for a year or so now. I really like this one, and am now heavily in the third draft of edits. It's looking quite good, and I'm looking forward to getting it out there.
M.S. Dobing Read loads - "How to" books are good for learning structure, rules etc, but the best "How to" books out there are other novels. Read loads of them, both in and out of your genre. See how different authors do certain things like describing the scene, dialogue, action etc. You learn much more from that, in my opinion, than you do from "How to" books.

Oh, and write, every day.
M.S. Dobing I'm just a hobbyist writer currently, but for me it's the absolute freedom that I have when working on a story. It's just me, my imagination and the keyboard and it's brilliant!
M.S. Dobing Just write. Even if it's one line in a day. I've found that if I just leave it "for one day" this can snowball and the next thing I know days or even weeks have passed.

If I just write one line, even if it's garbage, I get the psychological boost that I've written "something". Eventually the block clears, and I'm pounding the keys again!
