My advice is fairly simple. Finish your first manuscript: you can't edit what isn't there. And two, show don't tell. In that exact order. After that, go ahead and try self-editing, beta readers, and possibly self-publishing.

I'll answer this for my most recent published book. The idea came to be because I was creating a sort of workbook for myself. I wanted to learn more about some aspects of Paganism that I had previously not researched. I decided one day to publish this because I did not see many people with this type of workbook.

I am currently working on the second, and now likely final book for my Darkness series. It was originally going to be a trilogy but I have since changed my mind to make it into a duology. It will be published fall 2016.
