Get up and get away from the screen, the blinking cursor, and the frustration you feel when the words just aren't flowing. Walk around the room or head outside for a small stroll, maybe with the dog. Make a cup of coffee or tea, and then head back to my desk. Always head back to that desk, sit down, and try and write again.

I had an unsettling dream a few years ago that crashed around in my head for a few days afterward. I couldn't shake the images, so I decided to just write a rough outline for the dream and hope that was enough to ignore it. It worked for a few years until two weeks ago when the dream popped back into my head, but this time as a fully formed short story.
