   “Why do you guys call me ‘Princess’? I’m no princess.”
   Dalton sits back on his heels against the lockers next to me with his usual self-assured smirk. “Well, let’s see…you’re rich, your dad is a effin’ rock star, which makes him a king in my book, you’re prudish, you’re pretty, and you have delicate mannerisms sometimes. ‘Princess’ just seemed to suit you.”
   With wide eyes, I struggle to absorb everything he just told me. Delicate mannerisms? What version of Mads does he know, and where can I find her?
   My self-deprecating thoughts are interrupted when Raven appears out of nowhere with her usual swarm of girls in tow. She strides up to Giovanni Abate, who is still standing at his locker behind us. Cupping his neck with her left hand, Raven looks directly into my eyes as she slowly pulls Gio’s face down to hers. Before I can even register what’s going on, they’re in a lip-lock very similar to the one I found them in on Halloween night. Everyone in the hallway gasps and stares at Raven’s disgusting display. My stomach heaves, making me turn the other direction to avoid losing my breakfast. This is a battle tactic I wasn’t counting on her starting off with. She saved all her attack power over the past week for this one effective takedown in the hallway. I’m about to come unraveled right now in front of all these people. From the sounds they’re making, I can gather Gio is returning her kiss with equal fervor. Real or not, I’m not ready for this, and not only is it hurting me, it’s insanely disrespectful to Dalton.
   The disrespect is not lost on my streetwise friend. I hear him growl and seethe behind me. Then I’m surprised when he grips me by the shoulders and whirls me around to face him. He leans down, looks me dead in the eyes, and probes my soul as he asks me a question.
   “You wanna get her back?”

   “This place is so not me,” I mutter under my breath as Raven and our personal shopper, Vicki, lead me through the racks at Nothing But Chic Boutique the next morning. All around me I see nothing but a sea of floral print and neon. My rocker chick radar is not picking up even the slightest blip of an outfit that would suit my taste. They might as well have called this store “Nothing But The Latest Trends” because that is literally the only thing they carry. My heart sinks further the more I walk around in here. I’m going to look like an idiot in these clothes—not because of my looks, but because they’re not going to suit my personality at all.
   “Do you have any questions, Madison?” Vicki asks over her shoulder from about ten feet in front of me. Her yellow stilettos click on the marble tiles as she sashays through like she owns the place.
   “Yeah, what’s the ‘rich bitch’ version of a Hot Topic?”
   Vicki and Raven whirl around to face me, finally giving me their full attention for the first time since we entered the store. I thought I grumbled that under my breath, but I guess it was a little louder than I thought it was.
   “Madison!” Raven’s face has gone ashen. Little Miss Prim and Proper Rich Girl blushes when I use “naughty words” in front of people.
   Vicki’s cherry red lips pout as she draws her perfectly waxed blonde eyebrows together. “You don’t like our store?”
   Raven jumps in quickly. “I apologize for my sister, Victoria. She was raised on a farm by a retired rock star. Etiquette does not seem to be her strong suit.” She stares me down with her icy blue eyes— exact copies of mine.
   Guilt settles in my stomach. “I’m sorry, Vicki. I didn’t mean to offend. It’s not you, it’s just this place doesn’t seem to be my scene.”
   “‘Scene’ or none, this is where we’re shopping. As Jacie Redinger’s daughters, you and I are among the top trendsetters in the nation. We must look the part.” Raven brushes me off and the two of them continue to discuss our fashion choices without me.
   Eventually, I find myself in the dressing room with armfuls of clothes that make me want to gag. I glance up into the full-length mirror to examine my recently changed appearance. Jet-black hair, bright red lipstick, and modest eye makeup adorn a face that once had an identity all its own. Now even my French manicure proclaims to the world that I am Raven Redinger’s exact physical copy. My whole goal in life was to be unique and make something of myself. I feel a twinge of guilt at letting that go, even temporarily, but I’d rather be known as a Redinger-Daley Clone—er, Twin—than the daughter Jacie Redinger abandoned as a baby. As long as I never hear the term “Basket Baby” again, it will be a step up.

Today’s topic is music and playlists, which in my opinion is the easiest topic on the planet to talk about. Just by looking at my author profile (P.S., drop me a line! Haley Allison), anyone could guess what my favorite genre of music is.

Is there an echo in here?

Yes, I’m a female and I’m obsessed with rock music. My favorite station plays nothing but rock all day long. It’s called Man Up! and I feel really awkward listening to it sometimes because they’re obviously marketing toward people with the opposite set of genitals, but the music is just so damn good. I’m not a lesbian or a tomboy, but somehow this station just speaks to me.

Apparently I like masculine music. So sue me.

I also like alternative rock and music from the 2000’s (P!nk, Avril Lavigne, Kelly Clarkson, and sometimes Katy Perry, Carrie Underwood, and Taylor Swift). My playlists for the DORK series definitely reflect these tendencies. I’m about to post them below along with the Spotify links (if you’re not on Spotify…seriously, how dare you call yourself a music lover?

Hoo boy, I’m gonna have fun with this one.

Currently, I’m typing this standing up because I have to keep my laptop away from my son. That alone should give you some insight on my circus of a life. As an author, student, mother, and co-owner of a business, there is never a dull moment. I literally never get bored and am always working on something, whether it be a new teaser design or a drama-filled scene in a book.

So here it goes:

Around 7:30-8 AM, my husband and son wake me up. I kiss Hubs goodbye and laze on the couch for about 30 minutes, trying to wake up, and then I finally remember I need coffee or something to eat.

8:30-9:30, I get my son dressed, fed, and happy while I simultaneously catch up on business email and notifications from the night before.

K, so full disclosure, he’s not dressed today. He’s naked and seems to like it that way. At least his diaper is clean, right?

9:30-10:30, I let my son play or watch TV while I get some work done.

10:30-2, in today’s case, I get myself and Bubby ready and go out to lunch with family and wherever else they decide to take me today. While we’re out, I’m like, “Hey, can I run into Bi-Lo and pick up a few groceries while you hang out with Bubby?” Two birds with one stone. The biggest perk of my life is having plenty of loving babysitters around.

2:30-3ish, we’re home, and my son is finally in bed for a nap. Whew! Finally time to get some real work done, whether it be homework, designing, or writing.

4:00, Bubby wakes up crying. Great. Now he’s going to be in a foul mood, and I’m going to have to try to get him out of it for the next 30 minutes. So much for hitting 2K words today.

4:30-6:30, I try to balance housework, keeping Bubby entertained, and cooking dinner while I continue to respond to emails and talk to clients as I can.

6:30-9:00 is dinner and family time. We keep that religiously. I get dirty looks if I so much as take my laptop out while family time is going on.

9:00 onward, I’m lucky if I have enough energy to stay awake. If I do, it’s back to more writing or graphic design homework until I finally get to the point where I can’t keep my eyes open.

This doesn’t even include the myriad of small tasks that have to be done during the day, such as laundry, feeding the dog, taking out the trash, and cleaning my son’s high chair tray a zillion times. I’m always in a frantic state of “GET ‘ER DONE,” which is probably why I get so exhausted at night. At least I get plenty of sleep. I’d be a zombie if I didn’t.

Some days I wake up as early as 5:30 AM to get in some extra writing or “me” time. The early morning hours are quiet, dark, and private, which I absolutely love. I find them inspiring for some reason. Yes, I’m that weird.

Then I get tired around 8 or 9 and have to chug the coffee.

Adulting is hard. I need a day at the spa.
