Peter Newman Tarbutton was born in 1943 in Columbus, Ohio, and after the war he relocated with his family to the small town of Daingerfield in northeast Texas. It was while in high school that his senior English teacher encouraged him to write. However, after graduation he studied biology and chemistry taking both a Bachelor's and Master's degrees from East Texas State University(now Texas A&M University Commerce). He worked as a chemist for eight years, five of those being with Miles Laboratories where he gained an appreciation for in-depth research. After this time he returned to college to take a degree in Pharmacy from the University of Houston. He practiced that profession for thirty-three years before retiring to Brenham, Texas.
