Favourite books & comics of 2024

My favourite books and comics/ graphic novels I read in 2024!

Mostly queer romance and/or fantasy recent releases (the first 3 are 2021-23).

My health problems mean I listen to prose whenever there’s an audiobook available (using libro.fm, who have an extremely good selection). That means the non-graphic novels I recommend almost always have a great audio version too.

Graphic novels I’m more up to da

Lots of interesting bits. I found the flashback murder mystery parts really compelling, where a group of rich kids - however priveleged in some ways - end up trapped with no options in cycles of abuse that feel tied to the ways they don't fit the mol ...more

I'm obsessed with Sas Milledge's art and thought it was a particularly strong choice for these books - I can't imagine them working any other way. I think it's a very hard thing to adapt and I'm shocked how well it worked for me. The woods, the memor ...more

"Here's the thumbnail review: Every good thing you've heard about Murderbot is true.

And that may be enough of a review for you. But here's a bit more.

This reminded me of my older forays into SF. It's a book that simply dumps you into a world. Murderbo" Read more of this review »

For the first 70% I thought this was a fairly intriguing epic/ thief fantasy with some really lovely prose, fun gender ideas and great hooky romance concept, even if the romance didn’t especially grab my own personal tastes. HOWEVER. I should have tr ...more

"DEVASTATED. 10/10 no notes

Putting my thoughts on this novel into words is so hard. Despite reading so much, I rarely see representation on page that feels like it represents my experience. Dragonfall, however, with its genderfluid chronically ill har" Read more of this review »

Robin Hobb
“You seek a false comfort when you demand that I define myself for you with words. Words do not contain or define any person. A heart can, if it is willing.”
Robin Hobb, Golden Fool

Eli Clare
“I want to sharpen my pride on what strengthens me, my witness on what haunts me. Whatever we name ourselves, however we end up shattering our self-hatred, shame, silence, and isolation, the goal is the same: to end our daily material oppression.”
Eli Clare, Exile and Pride: Disability, Queerness, and Liberation

Ursula K. Le Guin
“How does one hate a country, or love one? Tibe talks about it; I lack the trick of it. I know people, I know towns, farms, hills and rivers and rocks, I know how the sun at sunset in autumn falls on the side of a certain plowland in the hills; but what is the sense of giving a boundary to all that, of giving it a name and ceasing to love where the name ceases to apply? What is love of one's country; is it hate of one's uncountry? Then it's not a good thing. Is it simply self-love? That's a good thing, but one mustn't make a virtue of it, or a profession... Insofar as I love life, I love the hills of the Domain of Estre, but that sort of love does not have a boundary-line of hate. And beyond that, I am ignorant, I hope.”
Ursula K. Le Guin, The Left Hand of Darkness
