The South wanted development, education, healthcare, equal representation in government. The North wanted to keep them poor, illiterate, while digging up the oil. Saraaya was in the middle of the country, right in the middle of the oil fields. A mixed population: Southern Nilotes and Northern nomads, who spent half the year grazing their cattle here. Whoever controlled Saraaya controlled the oil. Right now it was the government.”
