Renate Lachman ugledna je slavistica i znanstvenica, sveučilišna profesorica u mirovini, članica Academia Europaea i članica Akademije znanosti u Heidelbergu. Završila je studij povijesti, filozofije i talijanskoga jezika. Hrvatski jezik počela je učiti krajem pedesetih godina prošloga stoljeća, započevši uspješnu znanstvenu karijeru prvom objavljenom knjigom, studijom o Ignjatu Đorđiću i slavenskom baroku (Köln/Graz, 1964). Autorica je četiriju i priređivačica još triju knjiga. Ova knjiga predstavlja izbor iz triju središnjih područja autoričinih znanstveno-teorijskih interesa.
