A specialist in the naval history of the First World War, Paul G. Halpern is Professor of History Emeritus at Florida State University. Halpern graduated with honors with a bachelor of arts degree in history from the University of Virginia in 1958. He joined the United States Army and served from 1958 to 1960, reaching the grade of first lieutenant. On leaving military service, Halpern earned an MA (1961) and Ph.D. (1966) in history from Harvard University. He has served on the Council of the Navy Records Society (Great Britain) and is a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society
