I'm a Montana native, and I returned home in 2007. My first novel, In Open Spaces, made the San Francisco Chronicle's bestseller list. I got my MA in Creative Writing from Boston University in 1991, and have been a MacDowell fellow and a fortune cookie writer. The Watershed Years, the sequel to number one, was published in 2007 and was a finalist for the High Plains Book Award. In 2012, WEST OF 98, an anthology I edited with Lynn Stegner, was released by the University of Texas Press. And in 2012r, my third novel, High and Inside, was released by Bangtail Press and was also named a finalist for the High Plains Book Award. In April 2016, Fifty-Six Counties: A Montana Journey came out. This is my first non-fiction effort, about my travels to ...more

Why I Gave Up Golf

I was five or six the first time my father took me golfing, at the Kendrick Municipal Golf Course in Sheridan, Wyoming, where he had landed a job as a sixth grade teacher. I fell in love with the game from that first time, at first because it meant time alone with my dad. But there was something about trying to make solid contact between a bent club and a tiny white ball that appealed to my perfe

Bill Hi Russell,

Will most certainly take a look at both your books.

My second novel is: The Feathery...I'm working on a third..Historical fiction. Set in a small Cape Cod town, 1942. and in the cruel Atlantic aboard a German U-Boat, with a homeport in Lorient, France.
Working title is: A Drumbeat Too Near.
Check out The Feathery on Amazon...Pub date for, A Drumbeat Too Near, is August/2009.

Best,

Bill

Becky Everhart You were a fortune cookie writer? How exciting! How, exactly, does one come into such a line of work? The funniest fortune cookie fortune I've come across said "Promote literacy--buy more fortune cookies."

Jeremy I want to apologize for the all the recommendations from me today. I wanted to share the Stoker Award news, and I only pressed the send button once--I'm not sure what happened to create so many messages. Some weird glitch.

Argh...this is terrible...

Again, I'm very sorry.

-Jeremy

Jeremy Here’s wishing you a nifty New Year filled with noiseless noses, neato nicknames, noble Nebraskans, gnarly narcoleptic nebulas, and novel novels about nut-eating narwhals and novercaphobic gnats.

-Jeremy :)

P.S.—I’m currently offering autographed/personally-inscribed copies of my novel, Vacation, with free shipping for those in the US. If there’s anything you could do to help me spread the word about this, I’d really appreciate it. Feel free to click here for details:

Jeremy Hi Russell!

Here’s wishing you a yippee-filled Yuletime overflowing with yard-long yams, yapping yoyo-yanking yetis, yak-milk yeast-cakes, and yellow yarn-yielding year-end yard-gnomes.

-Jeremy :)

Jeremy Thanks for the message, Russell! I've never read Angle of Repose, so I'll definitely check it out.

I think right now my favorite novel is either 1984, or The God of Small Things.

Here’s wishing you a fantastic day full of first-rate fates, fascinating flavors, and famous fire-eating ferret faeries.

-Jeremy :)

Russell Good question, Jeremy...I think I'd have to answer that in two parts...my favorite novel was probably Angle of Repose by Wallace Stegner. But the novel that blew me away more than any other was The Sound and the Fury. I just read it again a couple of years ago, and after writing several novels myself, this one took my breath away for the risks Faulkner took. He breaks every rule. And he makes it work.

Jeremy Hi Russell!

If you don't mind sharing--I was wondering, what's your favorite novel of all time?

Here’s wishing you a fantastic day filled with fabulous friendships, fanciful festivities, and frolicking phantom footstools.

-Jeremy :)
