I've launched the
Burning Sands post-apocalyptic trilogy, with
Beneath Burning Sands (also
here).
Beneath Burning Sands is a SF suspense-thriller. As much as I love zombies, there aren't any. Also, the protagonist isn't a big, burly man armed to the teeth with assault weapons and an almost psychotic patriotic zeal. I hope you'll give it a try.
I loved post-apocalyptic fiction back when it was more of a desperate scramble to gather resources and find safety after lunatics pushed the big red button. The 1970s had some great post-apocalyptic work (including "Planet of the Apes"), and the 1980s were overrun with great B-movie shlock filled with desert warriors, radioactive mutants, and other fun tropes. Oh, sure, there was the more realistic "everybody dies" downer here and there, but for the most part, the good team won out. Barely.
My first attempt at a novel (1982/1983) was a terrible post-apocalyptic mess, complete with a psychic antagonist. I'm hoping there's at least a little more sophistication to the
Burning Sands series.
