Deleted all my reviews

Hi all,

I've gotten a couple messages about this already but I deleted all of my reviews. The constant debates over whether authors should be allowed to write reviews turned what used to be a fun and enjoyable hobby into something that made me feel increasingly stressed and policed as it began to clash with my writing career.

I'm reuploading some of my favorite reviews (sorry for the spam) and I'll probably still continue to review my favorite books & old bodice-rippers, but today marks an official end to my sixteen year stint as a book reviewer. I've privated my blog, too.

For the record, I sincerely believe that anyone should be able to review honestly, as long as they aren't being malicious or cruel, and I want people to feel safe reviewing my own work in what is-- and should be-- a readers' space. Even if they're an author.

Anyway, so long and thanks for all the fish. ♥

Moony (Captain Mischief) MeowPoff I absolutely love your reviews and always look forward to them. I`m sad that it has come to this. Sending hugs <3

Natalie Monroe I'll miss your reviews <3

R.E. Admore Yeah. It’s like a little honesty (honest opinion, really) is just too, too much. I’m kinda on the fence on this. Oh well, this gives you more time to write and market and relax.

julia✨ i'll be sad to see your reviews go. they were honest, funny, detailed, and really well done, and your more "negative" reviews never felt mean-spirited or done in poor taste. but you gotta do what's right for you!! i look forward to buying your next release <3

Christy Bean (semi-hiatus) Totally respect your decision, but will really miss your reviews :(

message 6: by Ziba (new)

Ziba This shouldn't even be a debate; everyone's entitled to their opinion about art and authors are no different. I found so many great books because of your reviews! Especially underrated gems like The Last Innocent Hour, which probably would’ve been buried into obscurity otherwise.

Thanks! That means a lot. I'll still be posting reviews of my faves. :)

It's honestly exhausting trying to toe the line. I can't do it anymore, I don't enjoy reviewing the way I used to, either. :( Still, I'm grateful for the friends I've made on here, and all the amazing books I've been introduced to.

TLIH is soooo good. I need to make sure I repost my five-star review of that book.

VKNask I've loved your reviews and was exposed to so many books I would never have known existed. As others have said, I respect your decision, but am sad you felt you had to do this. Maybe if things change someday, your blog could be shared again, but either way, wishing you the best with your writing!

Brooke This makes me so sad! I love your reviews. A few years ago when you started fresh I was also sad. If I recall the Ann Rice Stan’s caused hella drama at one point too, so I get why you’re doing it but it’s definitely a loss of entertainment and recommendations. RIP weird Wednesday reads as well.

Yeah, the drama sucks. But also, so does the hurting people's feelings part of it. That was actually why I stopped the Wednesday thing a while ago. Some of the books that I thought were silly weren't written with the intent of just being jokes to laugh at.

I don't have the energy to maintain a hobby that sows discontent.

Madison C. I'm so sorry to hear this, Nenia! I love your reviews and have always looked forward to reading your thoughts. We've frequently had similar opinions on books over the years, so I added a lot of great reads to my TBR list based on your recommendations. I totally understand your reasoning, but it's sad when a hobby turns into something stressful :( I hope you're able to enjoy reading more now, though!

Thank you! That means a lot because I LOVE your reviews, too. But don't worry-- I'm still going to be sharing all of my recommendations. I'm primarily writing gothic and horror romance now, so I plan on reading more of that. It's something I genuinely enjoy.

Melissa Stacy Ugh, tragic news. Losing your reviews makes Goodreads a less entertaining and informative place. But you make it clear why it's necessary.

I hope you have more peace and good feelings in your life as a result of this change. Wishing you all the best on your writing and hoping for good things in your life moving forward. <333

Nav Just saw this post. Very sorry to hear what made you decide to end your book reviews. You've got a talented eye for good books and talent when it comes to expressing it in a review form. Will deeply miss your reviews, but I respect what your going through and feeling. I send you all of my best wishes (heart emoji)

Meredith I'm late seeing this, but noticed some of your reviews (even for bodice rippers/old historical fiction like Marilyn Harris) were missing.

I understand your decision to delete reviews (now that I've been on GR for over 5 years I'm tempted to delete all my old reviews), but I wanted to leave a comment and encourage you to keep on posting reviews for at least/especially bodice rippers. You're one of the reviewers who got me into the genre and pointed me to the good authors. I think your BR reviews do a lot of good, especially since many of those books are out of print or the author doesn't have a large, active fanbase.

I just wanted to send a positive note your way ♡
