1.N/A 2. This book is for grades PreK-first grade. 3. This book follows a rabbit as it attempts to paint a picture. Starting with A for Apple, rabbit does things that start with each letter of the alphabet as he paints a picture of an apple all the way until Z when rabbit is zzzzzz fast asleep. 4. This alphabet book not only lists words or things that start with each letter of the alphabet, but has a storyline to it that is continuos through the book as the rabbit beings painting, things go wrong, the process of painting, and then finishing and cleaning up. The only part that I disliked was for X the books states "X is for the kisses that rabbit draws on his painting". Obviously referring to XOXO where X is for kisses, but in an alphabet book for young children where every other page had a word that started with that letter it could be confusing why X if for kisses. 5. In the classroom this book could be used for letter recognition, reading this book during a read aloud the teacher could have the children identify which word on the page is for each letter or even have them work with a partner and identify the words and practice writing them if there are enough books.
Appropriate grade level(s): Preschool to Kindergarten
Summary: Black and White Rabbit’s ABC is about a rabbit and it’s adventure with an apple. Throughout the book the rabbit is doing activities and discovering the alphabet.
My review: I enjoyed that Black and White Rabbit’s ABC is simple and the alphabet flowed within the story. The book contains colors and shapes that children will love.
1-2 Possible in-class uses: Black and White Rabbit’s ABC can be used during circle time, to learn the alphabet, and during independent reading. I think this would be a great book for a student to have in their book box. It contains the alphabet, colors, and shapes to help students absorb more topics at once. Its simplicity will make students want to read it repetitively and I think the illustrations will keep them engaged in the book!
1. This book did not receive any awards. 2. PreK - K 3. This is a story about a little baby rabbit who is beginning to paint. The little rabbit uses all of the letters of the alphabet to help him finish a painting of an apple for its momma. Once the little rabbit finishes its masterpiece he goes straight to bed to catch some Z's. 4. This book is cute but I think that is all that this book has to offer. There is not much creativity to this book and it is very simple. 5. I would not use this in my future classroom.
1. (none) 2. PreK-Kindergarten 3. This is a fun story about a black and white rabbit that discovers the alphabet. 4. This book features a cute bunny that discovers the alphabet. I like the use of the bunny because it's a friendly animal that young children generally love. 5. This book can be used to teach the alphabet (obviously), along with colors, and shapes. This is a fun and easy early education classroom book!
1). Awards the book has received: none 2). Appropriate grade levels: preschool-2nd grade 3). Original 3-line summary: This alphabet book is about a black and white rabbit who learns the letters of the alphabet. The rabbit goes through each letter by doing things that start each letter. He starts off by painting an apple for his mother. 4). Original 3-line review: This book is very cute. It teaches children about many things including, the alphabet, colors, and shapes. The author used simple words to describe each letter. 5). 2-3 possible in-class uses: One possible in-class use is teaching children about the alphabet, colors, or shapes. Teachers can demonstrate the use of the alphabet through this book. Another in-class use is have students draw pictures of some items they seen in the story. This will help the students develop their drawing and writing skills.
This one's kind of fun for an ABC book because instead of just objects for each letter there's a continuous narrative. It's also kind of interesting that the depiction of the rabbit isn't the usual cartoonish rendering despite the animal being anthropomorphized. I'm not gonna say the rabbit looks exactly true to life, but it certainly looks like a rodent.
Great ABC book. Cute illustrations and easy sentences and words. Black and white rabbit is painting a picture of an apple for his mom. Each page moves the painting along using the next letter of the alphabet.
The text for an ABC book is a bit unusual as some of the examples include verbs that aren’t always easy to illustrate. However, the pictures are adorable and the overall story was very cute. My 4 year enjoyed it.
An alphabet book with a through-story from a permanent collection. The rabbit paints an apple and goes through the alphabet. Not sure why it is so important that it is Black and White Rabbit, though it is a nice looking rabbit. Pleasant with good enough art.

Title: Black and White Rabbit’s ABC Author: Alan Baker Illustrator: Alan Baker Genre: Alphabet book Theme(s): Alphabet, colors, shapes Opening line/sentence: A is for apple. Brief Book Summary: Children will learn the alphabet while also engaging in a story about a rabbit painting an apple for it’s mom. As the alphabet continues so does the failures and successes’ of the rabbit’s painting. Professional Recommendation/Review #1: Ilene Cooper (Booklist, July 1994 (Vol. 90, No. 21)) This is a multi-book review. See also the title Brown Rabbit's Shape Book. Baker's trompe l'oeil style is shown off to good effect in these three concept books. ABC uses the alphabet cumulatively as a black-and-white rabbit, so realistic one can almost feel his fur, finds an apple, puts it on top of a box, and with a crayon starts drawing a picture of it. The use of verbs as well as nouns works well here, as does the story aspect, which will keep kids attentive. In Shape, a brown rabbit opens a cylinder decorated with triangle-covered paper and finds an assortment of balloons that blow up into different shapes. Perhaps the best book of the bunch is Color, in which a white rabbit falls into various pots of paint and shows youngsters how colors combine to form new hues. Fun, informative, and good value for the price. Professional Recommendation/Review #2: Judith J. Bellando: The little bunny in this ABC book goes through several steps as he paints an apple. Words are given for each letter of the alphabet as he paints. Very clever, and nicely illustrated. Response to Two Professional Reviews: Both highlight the beautiful illustrations in the book, the first reviewer going even further by describing them as “so realistic one can almost feel his fur”. The first reviewer does a good job mentioning how the story is filled with verbs and nouns for each letter of the alphabet. Both mention the storyline of the rabbit painting an apple. Evaluation of Literary Elements: The story does a very good job staying with the story line while still using each letter of the alphabet to begin each sentence. The author doesn’t just throw random words to fulfill the alphabet pattern, but instead, makes sure each letter of the alphabet goes with a word that makes sense in the story. The pictures are very appealing, and children will definitely enjoy each and every one of then. Consideration of Instructional Application: The student’s can create their own apple, or still life like the the rabbit does in the book. A teacher can put any object in the center of the classroom and have the student’s draw it as best they can. The students can also engage in the story by stating what letter of the alphabet is next/ predicting what happens next in the story.
We love all the 'rabbit books' at my house. My grandsons pull these off the shelves for me to read whenever they visit. I know some of them by heart.
In the ABC book, rabbit goes through the alphabet by using or doing something that starts with each letter. He gets an apple; he puts it on a box; he gets a crayon; he starts to draw ...
Etc. But this is strangely more entertaining than it might sound. The apple rolls off the box, so we need to get some glue and glue the apple to the box. But of course Rabbit gets glue on his paws, then he gets ink on his nose. It's silly in places and there's lots of pantomime going while we read this book. For a two-year old it can turn into a regular laugh riot. The six-year old is at the age where he'll roll his eyes at our antics, but then he gets in on the silliness, too.
(He told me once he was 'too old' for the rabbit books and I said, hey, I'm not too old and I'm...)
Then he sat down next to me and his brother while I read.
This books actually tells a story as Rabbit goes through the alphabet. Rabbit wants to paint an Apple, so puts it on a Box and first uses a Crayon to Draw.... IT's a nice break form the other ABC books.
