Alberto Manguel (born 1948 in Buenos Aires) is an Argentine-born writer, translator, and editor. He is the author of numerous non-fiction books such as The Dictionary of Imaginary Places (co-written with Gianni Guadalupi in 1980) and A History of Reading (1996) The Library at Night (2007) and Homer's Iliad and Odyssey: A Biography (2008), and novels such as News From a Foreign Country Came (1991).

Manguel believes in the central importance of the book in societies of the written word where, in recent times, the intellectual act has lost most of its prestige. Libraries (the reservoirs of collective memory) should be our essential symbol, not banks. Humans can be defined as reading animals, come into the world to decipher it and themselves.

O serie de eseuri interesante prin anecdotică, expozitive și lipsite de orice veleitate dialectică. Manguel nu argumentează nici pro, nici contra. În asta se deosebește radical de Borges care nu scria despre un subiect, dacă acest subiect nu era (și) prilejul unei discuții. Și unde dialectică nu e, nici eseu nu (prea) e.

Cartea ar trebui să fie o meditație despre cuvinte și texte, despre numirea lucrurilor, despre folosul cărților (aici s-au ascuns numele), dar e mai degrabă un amestec din orice. În „Contabilul orb”, de exemplu, autorul pornește de la un eseu neîncheiat al lui Northrop Frye și vorbește dezlânat despre război, liste contabile, Iliada și Odiseea, identitatea lui Homer, noțiunea echivocă de orbire etc. Între secțiunile eseului, legătura e foarte slabă. Măcar autorul scrie elegant. Așadar, partea cea mai prețioasă din acest volum eclectic sunt informațiile rare, greu de găsit altminteri, și anecdotele. Am ales câteva despre istoria cărții și lecturii. Poate vă interesează:

1. Chiar și după ce fusese atins de Alzheimer, Ralph Waldo Emerson citea cu plăcere, nu-și pierduse bucuria cititului. În fiecare dimineață, se așeza la birou și deschidea curios o carte. Ritualul lecturii îi intrase în sânge.

2. Una dintre muzele lui Borges se numea: Beatriz Bibiloni Webster de Bullrich. Borges i-a scris două poeme în engleză. Alta se numea Pippina Diehl de Moreno Hueyo. Dar marea iubire a vieții sale a fost, neîndoielnic, Norah Lange (1905-1972). Fusese fascinat de Norah și o pomenea cu orice prilej. Sigur, când nu era de față Maria Kodama...

3. În data de 25 august 1934, Borges a încercat să se sinucidă. A regretat o viață întreagă că n-a reușit, dar nu a repetat experiența...

4. Eseistul și moralistul francez Joseph Joubert (1754 - 1824), prieten cu D'Alembert, Diderot și Chateaubriand, nu păstra dintr-o carte decât pasajele care îi plăcuseră. Rupea paginile inutile, desfăcea cărțile și acoperea cu tuș restul. A practicat cenzura pe biblioteca-i proprie. În plus, biblioteca nu ocupa prea mult spațiu. Dacă ar fi fost mai exigent (din păcate, n-a fost), ar fi păstrat o singură pagină. Oricum, păstra numai ceea ce fusese pe gustul său.

5. De fiecare dată când primea în audiență profesori greci, împăratul Tiberius îi întreba: „Ce anume cântau sirenele?”. Informația ne-a transmis-o Suetonius. Abia Sir Thomas Browne a cutezat să afirme că o astfel de întrebare e insolubilă, chiar dacă putea primi o mulțime de răspunsuri ipotetice. De la conjectură la certitudine nu e decât un pas. Dar acel pas trebuie să acopere un spațiu infinit. În treacăt fie spus, Thomas Browne s-a gândit cu oarece voluptate la un posibil incendiu al bibliotecii Vaticanului.

6. Limba engleză nu dispune de un vocabular erotic. În poemele de iubire, limbajul e sau medical sau grosolan. Spaniola, germana, italiana şi portugheza au același păcat. Asta e strict părerea lui Alberto Manguel. Eu nu mă pronunț.

7. Promovarea e un obicei vechi. Walt Whitman își promova volumul Fire de iarbă „cu ajutorul unor cronici entuziaste pe care le scria chiar el”. La rândul lui, Guillaume Apollinaire și-a recenzat în termeni ditirambici cărțile. (2.07.25, miercuri).

Lăsând la o parte latura anecdotică a volumului, cartea lui Alberto Manguel e o făptură compozită. Autorul scrie despre orice cu egală indiferență. Faptul că fiecare eseu are un motto din Peripețiile Alisei (în oglindă, în pădure) de Lewis Carroll nu oferă nici o unitate cărții. E numai o autoamăgire, un moft.

Alberto Manguel is someone I would love to have a glass of wine with, so long as we can sit, sip, and dip into our mutual love of reading. My whole life I have been considered "odd" because of my love for reading and the written word, but when I read Manguel I feel comfortable. I know that I am not alone. As a child I spent many a summer vacation squirreled away indoors with books while the rest of my family went swimming, played outside, or was planted before the television. Perhaps I avoided the outdoors because I knew, even then, of my deep hatred for the sun and heat of Texas summers (something which would eventually plant the seeds for my distaste for Texas in general, but that's another story). Even today I own a deeper preference for books over people. They are the truest friends I have ever known.

When you read Alberto Manguel you know you are reading the words of a man whose passions and appreciations are simple, but deeply held. He does not love a thing for the thing's sake, which is the mistake many of my family make when they observe my love for books and reading. It is more than that. There is in my love for books and words a communion, a very real, visceral relationship which helps to keep me sane and connected to the few parts of myself worth loving. Even as my hope fades in the face of life's disappointments, persistent adversity, and that most unsympathetic of villains, time, I am forever in love with the word. There is power in words, books, and ideas, I will believe this until my dying day. Manguel knows this as well and he writes of it with unrivaled intelligence, wit, and loyalty.

I recommend any of his books.

فن القراءة

مجموعة من مقالات ألبرتو مانغويل عن الكتب والقراءة، كنت قد قرأت جزء من هذه المقالات في كتابه (في غابة المرآة)، القراءة لمانغويل ممتعة، تبعث في القارئ شغف القراءة ومتعتها.

احد الكتب التي تجعلك لا تريد سوى انهاءها والفرار منها. كان به بعض المقالات المدهشة، لكنها كانت الابرة في كومة قش.

يشكو هذا الكتاب من علتين جوهريتين:
١- الترجمة حرفية وسيئة بشكل محزن. بعض الجمل خاطئة تماما ويمكن ان تتسبب بأزمة قلبية لمعلم اللغة العربية (مثلا: كان مانغويل لاحظ) وتنتهي الى تشكيل جمل بلا معنى حقيقي.
وهي علة يمكن معالجتها بتنقيح الترجمة.
٢- اما العلة الثانية فلا علاج لها. فالافكار ليست حقا مترابطة، وهي تسبح وتتشتت وتضيع في كل اتجاه بينما يحاول مانغويل اقناعنا انه مسيطر على الفكرة. مثلا يبدأ المقال بالحديث عن ان القراءة ليست للكتب فقط بل ايضا لكائنات الوجود ثم ينتقل لتأكيد التشابه بين تصنيف المكتبة وتقسيم احواض الزرع في الحديقة، ومنها الى حدائق الملوك، ثم سيرة الملوك الفرنسيين وفلوتير، ثم يحاول ان يختم بالفكرة الاولى التي بدأ بها. حقا؟

وبسبب اصراره على ان تكون المقالات ذات علاقة بالقراءة وجدت انه قد انتهى الى 'تسخيف' قصص عميقة مثل قصة اليهودي التائه ولوي عنقها واجبارها على ان تكون ذات ارتباط بالقراءة والكتب.

رغم وجود ترجمتين للكتاب الا ان مراجعات القراء تنبئني ان لا ترجمة قادرة على علاج العلة الثانية. 

ورغم احتواء الكتاب على افكار لطيفة وقصص جيدة، لكنها جيدة كل على حدة، اما محاولة ربطها في فكرة مركزية فتثير الدوار.

ولكي يجعل الأمور اصعب، فمانغويل كقارئ موسوعي يكتب لقارئ يشبهه، وهو ينتهي الى حشد الكثير من المرجعيات والاشارات والاسماء الى اعمال ادبية اخرى دون تقديم الكثير من التفاصيل، ولا يمكنك ان تأخذ المعنى الذي يقصده كاملا ان لم تكن مطلعا على الاعمال التي يشير لها.

يؤسفني ان هذا الكتاب كان التعارف الاول مع مانغويل لكنه يجعلني اصرف النظر لوقت غير قصير عن اي كتاب اخر له.

"Tarih hakikatin anası olabilir ama gayri meşru çocuklar da doğurabilir."

Alberto Manguel'le yolculuğum sürüyor. Öyle bir yolculuk ki onunla yol aldıkça kendi okurluk yolculuğumun bana verdiği bazı unutulmuş hazları da yeniden keşfediyor ve yüceltiyorum gibi hissediyorum. Manguel çocukluğunu, edebiyatın onda yarattığı ilk heyecanları, ilk kütüphanesini (ve tabii sonrakileri) anlatıyor, ben kimi çok benzer, kimi bambaşka kendi anılarıma dönüyorum. Gülümsüyorum, şaşırıyorum, bir sürü şey öğreniyorum, bayılıyorum keyiften!

Bu kitapları okumayı bunca ertelemiş olmamda bir hikmet varmış meğerse. Manguel'in uçsuz bucaksız birikiminin, okuduğu binlerce kitabın küçük de olsa bir kısmıyla haşır neşir olmuş olarak okumaktan büyük haz alıyorum; bildiğimin en az beş katını da öğreniyorum okurken. Manguel okumanın ve okurluğun biçimlerine, siyasetle edebiyatın diyalektik ilişkisine, kitapların kendimizi keşfetme seyahatimizdeki ihtişamlı rehberliğine, yazılı metnin geçmişine, bugününe ve geleceğine dair akıl yürütüyor, hiçbir denemesi başladığı yerde bitmiyor, katman katman açılıyor.

Dili her zamanki gibi pek leziz, kimi denemeleri görece zor olsa da pek çoğu hikâye gibi akıp gidiyor çünkü Manguel anlatısının odağına her zaman insanı ve insanî deneyimleri alıyor, teorik bir çerçeve çizerken bile o odaktan kopmuyor. Ben işte edebiyata dair bu tür denemeler okumaya bayılıyorum, edebiyata teknik bir mesele gibi bakmayan, yapısökümcü bir yaklaşımla sanki onu hislerden azade "analiz" etmek mümkünmüş yanılsamasına düşmeyen, kitaplara neredeyse sevgiyle yaklaşan bir inceleme biçimi onunki. O kadar benlik ki, bazen hissettiğim "bazı yazarlara teşekkür etme ihtiyacımın" tam olarak hangi itkiden kaynaklandığını anlıyorum Manguel'i okudukça.

Son bir alıntıyla bitireyim. Manguel'in okurluğunu da, yazarlığını da, biz okurların okurluğunu okşayış biçimini de çok seviyorum. İyi ki yazıyor. ❤️

"Every text is, in an essential sense, an interactive text, changing according to a particular reader, at a particular hour, and in a particular place. Every single reading carries the reader into the 'spiral of interpertation,' ...."

The act of reading becomes the art of reading when one learns to fly within the pages of a good book's pagentry. AM's writer as reader offers up a courtly melange of insigtful and joyous reflections of his readerly life. He calls upon stalwart reading selections "Don Quixote" and "Through the Looking Glass" and Homer's epics and Borges's imagination to elucidate a readers' journey into the beyond worlds of fiction's humanity. A chapter entitled "Notes Toward a Definition of an Ideal Reader" is a gem - "One must be an inventor to read well." Ralph Waldo Emerson - "Every ideal reader is an associative reader and reads as if all books were the work of one ageless and prolific author."

Oh no, can I really be giving Alberto Manguel only three stars? I didn't realize this book would be so disconnected. The beginning few chapters are amazing, about how reading forms a person, the relationship a reader has with books - his examples are personal and I marked a bunch of things to use in my reading class. But then the essays turn a bit obscure, and I didn't find much to interest me, sadly.

Some tidbits from the first few chapters:

“I learned at a very early age that unless you are reading for some purpose other than pleasure (as we all sometimes must for our sins), you can safely skim over difficult quagmires, cut your way through tangled jungles, skip the solemn and boring lowlands, and simply let yourself be carried by the vigorous stream of the tale.” (3)

“How are readers to be guided by these entrusted spirits to find their way in the ineffable reality of the wood?

Systematic reading is of little help. Following an official book list (of classics, of literary history, of censored or recommended reading, of library catalogues) may, by chance, throw up a useful name, as long as we bear in mind the motives behind the lists. But the best guides, I believe, are the reader’s whims – trust in pleasure and faith in haphazardness – which sometimes lead us into a makeshift state of grace, allowing us to spin gold out of flax.” (7-8)

“In the midst of uncertainty and many kinds of fear, threatened by loss, change, and the welling of pain within and without for which one can offer no comfort, readers know that at least there are, here and there, a few safe places, as real as paper and as bracing as ink, to grant us roof and board us passage through the dark and nameless wood.” (10)

“The possibilities offered by books are legion. The solitary relationship of a reader with his or her books breaks into dozens of further relationships: with friends upon whom we urge the books we like, with booksellers who suggest new titles, with strangers for whom we might compile an anthology. As we read and reread over the years, these activities multiply and echo one another. A book we loved in our youth is suddenly recalled by someone to whom it was long ago recommended, the reissue of a book we thought forgotten makes it again new to our eyes, a story read in one context becomes a different story under a different cover. Books enjoy this modest kind of immortality.” (16)

Toate stelutele pentru ca Alberto Manguel ne spune inca o data de ce cartile sunt cei mai buni prieteni pe care ii putem avea ... rabdatori, tacuti, asteptandu-ne ... Despre biblioteci, despre carti, despre scriitori, despre cititori ... o lume care nu se mai termina, despre asta este " Un cititor in padurea din oglinda " ... o lume fermecata :)

تم نشر مواد هذا الكتاب سابقًا، محاضرات، مقالات صحفية... ثم تم جمعها في كتاب واحد وتمّت ترجمته.

العنوان فضفاض بعض الشيء لأن الفصول تتفاوت من حيث الموضوع ومن حيث القيمة.

بشكل عام كتاب جيد رغم كمية الحشو الرهيبة بداخله.

كتاب فن القراءة للمؤلف الأرجنتيني الكندي ألبرتو مانغويل يتألف من مجموعة من المقالات المتسلسلة العامرة بالأفكار الفلسفية والأسئلة المحيرة. فكرة الكتاب تدور حول تجارب الكاتب وآراؤه وذكرياته حول القراءة والكتابة والكتب والأدباء. فيما يلي بعض الاقتباسات من الكتاب ..

كل كتاب يمسي كتاباً مختلفاً في كل مرة نقرأه.

الكلمات هي الترياق.

نزوات القاريء هي خير الأدلاء (للوصول إلى الكتاب الجيد) - الوثوق بالمتعة والإيمان بالمصادفات - فقد تفضي بنا إلى حالة من النعمة المؤقتة.

قرأت هذا الكتاب مترجماً إلى العربية، إصدار دار المدى. ويا لسوء هذا الإصدار. ترجمة دون المتوسط بكثير، أخطاء نحوية شنيعة، أخطاء إملائية أسوأ. وكأن المترجم والناشر لم يقرأ الكتاب ولم يراجعه.
وما جعلني أتمه إلا اسم كاتبه. فكل محب للقراءة والكتب، لا يسعه إلا أن يحب كتابات ألبرتو مانغويل. فكتابات مانغويل هي غزل بديع  بالقراءة، ومديح عال للكتب وعالمها البديع، نقشها وريح أوراقها، نصها وحواشيها وهوامشها... والمحب يطرب ويهتز قلبه لذكر المحبوب.
لا تخلو كتب مانغويل من استشهادات كثيرة واقتباسات متوالية لكلمات وشخصيات الكلاسيكيات الأجنبية وخاصة الأوروبية مما يجعل بعض مصطحاتها مبهمة لقاريء مثلي لم يقرأ غالب تلك الكلاسيكيات وأيضا يولد في القلب رغبة في خوض تلك الغمار ولعلي أفعل أولا مع دون كيخوتة قريباً إن شاء الله. 
الكتاب أيضا عبارة عن مقالات وخطابات مجمعة، وهي عن القراءة كما يفهم من عنوان الكتاب الأصل (a reader on reading ) وليست عن (فن القراءة) كما جاء بالعنوان المترجم . متشوقا ومترقبا صدور ترجمة أرقى لهذا الكتاب لأعيد قراءته إن شاء الله.

ثمانية اقسام يكتبها الكاتب عن تاملات في القراءة وتاريخها ، اقتباسات في بداية كل فصل عن قصة اليس (عبر المرآة ، أليس في بلاد العجائب ) شخصيات تحدث عنهم كثيرا وهم ، بورخيس ، دون كيخوته، تشي غيفارا ، بينوكيو، دانتي ، هوميروس ، أليس . إقتباس عجبني ( إيمان القارئ لا يحرّك الجبال فحسب ، بل يتيح حتى لحجارتها الكلام. ( ما من سيفٍ قادر عَلَى طعنِ القلب بمثل تلك القوة التي تطعنه بها نقطةٌ موضوعةٌ في مكانها الصحيح .) ( القارئ المثالي يعرف ما اكتفى الكاتب بالإشارة إليه . القارئ المثالي يخلخل النص . القارئ المثالي لا يسلّم بكلمات الكاتب . ( عند إغلاق الكتاب ، يشعر القرّاء المثاليون أنه لو لم يقرؤوه لكان العالم أكثر فقراً .)

يعاب على هذا الكتاب تشعبه فقط [ما يختلف عن كل ما قرأتُ لمانغويل]، وإلا فهو مليء بالمقالات البديعة.
أذكر منها: التدليس - الشاعر والإيدز - فسحة للشبح - على مائدة صانع القبعات المجنون.

Alberto Manguel is the epitome of the erudite idealistic booklover. He ushers us into his library of ideas, knowing that his and our enjoyment of books, the reading, the collecting, the savouring, will be mutually enhanced by the sharing of ideas. He is one of those rare authors who make you feel that he is putting into words your own unformed thoughts. ”Because I loved books (which I collected with miserly passion) I felt the guilty shame of someone in love with a freak.” You recognise them on the page as your own, and are grateful for his immense skills of articulating what you didn’t know you thought, until you read them. And then he tells us so much more, he is showing us worlds, and he is our knowledgeable guide.

He doesn’t restrict his essays to books and libraries. They are about reading, about words, or Words, and their power. So his subjects are wide-ranging. He decries the falsity and hypocrisy of wordsmiths such as Maria Varga Llosa and his essays on Argentina’s dirty war. He chafes at the North American use of the editor in publishing. ”Before going out into the world, every writer of fiction in North America (and most of the British Commonwealth) acquires, as it were, a literary back-seat driver.” He thinks that this is because of the “mercantile fabric of American society. Because books must be saleable merchandise, experts must be employed to ensure that the products are profitably commercial. At its worst this unifying task produces mass-market romances; at its best it cuts Thomas Wolfe down to size.” As always, he has quotations to fit every need. When Graham Greene was asked to change the title of his novel Travels with My Aunt, his eight word telegram said, “Easier to change publisher than to change title.”

يقول فاضل السلطاني عن ظاهرة ألبيرتو مانغويل في الأدب " إذ لم يكرس أحد قبله كل حياته للقراءة، والقراءة فقط،بل إنه "مبتلى" بالقراءة مثلما يبتلى المجانين بحوار وهمي يتردد صداه في مكان ما في أذهانهم.


يرى مانغويل أنه مهموم في وصف القارئ والقراءه

ولذلك يتحدث عن مواصفات "القارئ المثالي"

فهو في نظره تماماً كما الكاتب قبل أن تتجمع الكلمات على الصفحة، وجد في اللحظة التي تسبق الإبداع. والقراء المثاليون لا يعيدون بناء قصة، إنهم يعيدون خلقها، وهم لا يتبعون قصة، إنهم يشاركون بها، والقارئ المثالي يعرف ما يعرفه الكاتب بالحدس، وهو لا يأخذ كلمات الكاتب حقيقةً مسلماً بها، وهو قارئ تراكمي وتشاركي، وهو قارئ يروق له استخدام المعجم، ولديه إحساس هائل بالفكاهة، وهو يتقاسم أخلاق دون كيخوته أيضاً، رغبة "مدام بوفاري" وشهوة "امرأة من باث" في حكايات كانتربري لجوفري تشوستر، وهو قارئ يقاسم الروح المغامرة لأوليسيس، وطبع هولدن كولفيلد بطل رواية "حارس في حقل الشوفان" لجي دي سالنجر.


*الكتاب قيّم وموسوعي وشامل في وصف القارئ المثالي الحقيقي والمكتبه المثاليه ، ولكن برأي أن لترجمه سبباً في فقدان و تناسق النص والمعنى !!

Alberto Manguel kitaplarına kahvenizi, bloknotunu ve kaleminizi yanınıza alıp başlamalısınız. Kitabı sakin sakin okumalı ve bittiğinde de aylarca kitaplardan çıkan notlardan oluşan okuma listesini okumalısınız... Manguel okumak benim için müthiş bir keyif. Ama sakın yolda, metroda ya da başka bir yerde araya sıkıştırmayın... Emin olun Manguel ile birlikte harika kitaplar keşfedeceksiniz.

فكرة الكتاب جميلة جدّاً..
ولكن للأسف قتلتها التّرجمة في مهدها..
فلم أقرأ في الكتاب سوى كلمات مركونة بعضها بجانب البعض الآخر.. خالية من أيّ روح أو معنى..
وأكاد أشتمّ المعنى من بعيييد..

أتساءل كيف تنشر دار نشر مهمّة كالمدى كتاب دون أن يكون من راجعه لغويّاً..
أو كيف يروق للمترجم أن ينشر باسمه ترجمة رديئة كهذه..
كاتب كبير كألبرتو مانغويل يؤسفني أن تكون ترجمة كتبه هكذا..
متى سيتعلّم النّاس إتقان عملهم والعمل بمصداقيّة..
وإلّا فليبحثوا عن مجال آخر يُبدعون فيه ولا يفسدون على غيرهم جمال النّص وإبداع الكلمة..
فقد استغرقني ثلاثة أشهر وأنا أغالب عباراته ولمّا أفهم المراد..

الترجمة سيئة، وبعض المقالات كانت جيدة عكس أخرى، والكاتب ذكر مآسي العالم كلها خاصة مآساة شعبه اليهودي، لكن لم يذكر أبدا ما فعله شعبه بالفلسطينين رغم أنه عاصر جميع الجرائم التي هزت العالم

Împătimit al cărților, Alberto Manguel a adunat în biblioteca sa din reședința din Poitou Charentes, Franța, peste 30.000 de volume din domenii diverse. De asemenea, în țara care l-a adoptat i s-a oferit titlul de de Ofițer al ordinului Artelor și Literelor. Cum el însuși mărturisește, acest drum a fost parcurs alături de călăuze minunate, pe diferite voci, iar cărțile citite și-au schimbat forma de nenumărate ori în mintea lui, pe măsură ce călătoria înainta. Hârtia este un refugiu, unul real, oferă liniște și capacitatea de regenerare, un acoperiș și o masă caldă în timpul aventurii noastre în pădurea întunecată și nenumită.

Alberto Manguel aduce în discuție în acest volum de eseuri rolul esențial pe care ar trebui să îl aibă cărțile în societatea contemporană. Cartea, ca rezervor al memoriei colective, este cea care îi ajută pe oameni să descifreze mediul în care trăiesc, dar și pe ei înșiși. Mărturisind că ani buni nu a avut tentația să scrie, ajunge să facă elogiul cărții și al cititului, ca modalitate esențială de a trăi și a te întreba continuu, căci nu pentru a afla răspunsuri citește cititorul ideal, ci pentru a găsi noi întrebări. Deși literatura nu depinde de cititori ideali, ci doar de cititori destul de buni.

Ca și în celelalte lucrări despre citit și despre cărți (Biblioteca Nopții, Sfârșitul Bibliotecii mele, Istoria lecturii) Alberto Manguel intercalează în argumentație povești din viața personală sau povești din experiența sa de cititor neobosit.

”Cred într-o etică a lecturii, într-o responsabilitate față de felul în care citim, într-un angajament în același timp politic și intim față de actul de a da paginile și de a urmări rândurile. Și cred că, din când în când, dincolo de intențiile autorului și de speranțele cititorului, o carte ne poate face mai buni și mai înțelepți.” (pg. 12)

Folosind resurse din întreaga mare literatură a lumii (Homer, Dante Aligheri, Franz Kafka, Jose Luis Borges, Robert Louis Stevenson, Julio Cortázar – am dat doar câteva exemple), volumul ne poartă prin istoria scrisului, a lecturii, a modificărilor pe care partenerii tăcuți (editorii) le aduc textelor, a cărții ca produs comercial. La final totuși, o întrebare planează peste toată argumentația abil și fluid construită: suntem capabili să ne menținem curiozitatea și să rămânem creativi?

În subcapitolul A trăi în bibliotecă, din ultima parte a cărții, Alberto Manguel susține că superputerea cărților constă în abilitatea de a putea opri timpul. Cititul oferă posibilitatea, printre altele de a vedea lumea cu ochii celorlalți; cărțile ne obligă să privim spre lume. Dacă rătăcim pentru a ne pierde sau pentru a ne regăsi este decizia noastră, cert este însă că nu trebuie să ne oprim, nu putem fi ancorați doar într-o pagină superficială, călătoria trebuie să continue.

هل قراءة السياسة نفس قراءة الأدب؟؟!!
لكن نرى أن الكاتب يتكلم عن السياسة وعن التاريخ وعن وعن ...لو كان تكلم عن مواضيع الكتب في كامل الكتاب كنا سنسامحه
لو سمى الكتاب فن القراءة الأرجنتيني كنا سنسامحه قليلا
عموما الكتاب لم أستطع تكملته فاستخدمت حق التخلي الذي ذكره "دانيال بناك " في كتابة "متعة القراءة" نجده يتقلب بين موضوع السياسة والتاريخ
لا ننسى أن الترجمة رديئة فكنت أتسائل كل الوقت هل الناشر لم يراجع الكتاب ابدا
أخطاء نحوية ومطبعيه وفي التنسيق أيضا

جذبني في البداية أن الكتاب مؤلف من نابغة في علم القراءة وشكل الكتاب والكتب السابقة للمؤلف
والإعلانات عن الكتاب مسبقا

وجهة نظري أن الكاتب كان يريد نشر مواضيع مستقلة عن السياسة وعن مواضيع ترتبط في القراءة السياسية بشكل غير مباشر ولم يجد فرصة مناسبة الا في هذا الكتاب
نعم تكلم عن أث الكلمات والصفحاتوالكتب لكن مقارنة بحجم الكتاب أجدها قليلا

يقول ألبرتو مانغويل في الحديث عن تعريف للقارئ المثالي :"روبنسون كروز ليس قارئا مثاليا . انه يقرأ الكتاب المقدس ليعثر على أجوبه . القارئ المثالي يقرأ ليعثر على أسئلة ".

ثمة كتبٌ ليس لها وجود مادي تزحمُ الرفوفَ باستمرار في مكتبة العقل: كتبٌ هي خليط كتبٍ أخرى قُرئت فيما مضى ولا يمكن تذكرها الآن إلا بشكل منقوص، كتبٌ تضع الحواشي والشروح والتفاسير لكتبٍ أخرى ولا يمكن لها الظهور ككتبٍ مستقلة بسبب كثرتها، كتبٌ مكتوبة في الأحلام أو الكوابيس تحتفظ الآن بإيقاع تلك العوالم الضبابية، كتبٌ نعلم بضرورة وجودها ولكنها لم تُكتب قط حتى الآن، كتبُ سيرة ذاتية حول تجاربَ مسكوتٍ عنها، كتبٌ حول رغباتٍ لا يمكن البوح بها، كتبٌ عن حقائق كانت واضحة في الماضي والآن طواها النسيان، كتبٌ مقدرتها على الابتكار مذهلة وتفوق أي وصف. يمكن تجميع كل طبعات دون كيخوته الصادرة في كل اللغات حتى هذا التاريخ – وهي تجمَّع، على سبيل المثال، في مكتبة معهد ثربانتس Instituto Cervantes في مدريد. أما طبعاتي أنا من دون كيخوته، تلك التي ترتبط بكلّ قراءة من قراءاتي العديدة، تلك التي اخترعتْها ذاكرتي وحَرّرها نسياني، فليس لها مكانٌ إلا في مكتبة عقلي.

A Reader on Reading by Alberto Manguel



This is a collection of short essays by Alberto Manguel. Alberto Manguel wrote The Dictionary of Imaginary Places and was an editor for many years. He muses on his own identity as a reader by talking about many personal issues on reading. He has an essay of the Legend of the Wandering Jew as a reader as well as comments on Jorge Luis Borges defense of Jewish culture. The author is Argentinian and pulls from the South American literary tradition.


He opens many of the essays with a quote from Alice in Wonderland or Through the Looking Glass and a picture from one of these books. This adds an inquisitive quality to the essays. I like many of his quotes and thoughts from Borges because Borges was a librarian and a fantasist in the tradition of magical realism. The essays remind me of thoughts that might have come out of The Phantom Tollbooth or Un Lun Dun.


Most of the essays are about the the experience of reading and being a reader. I especially liked the essay on Don Quixote, entitled Time and The Doleful Knight on Pp. 182-186. I can relate to Cervantes even though I have not read him..


Alberto Manguel attempts to list the qualities of the ideal reader and the ideal writer in two separate essays. They are quite delightful, even though I would not agree with many of them. Alberto Manguel has a deep relationship with books. He has a personal library of some 30,000 books. He wrote about this in an earlier book, The Library At Night.


There is also some discussion of technology in this book. The essay, Saint Augustine's Computer on Pp. 187-198 describes the differences between the printed word and the word on the screen. They are quite significant. He claims the printed word is less ephemeral and easier to subject to deep analysis than what appears on a computer screen.


Some of the issues in the book are quite political. Alberto Manguel grew up under Peron's government which was totalitarian. He describes many of the problems with literature, writing, and reading that occur under repressive regimes. He also discusses Che Guevara and his impact on literature. This makes for some interesting, if a bit pointed commentary.


There is a lot to recommend in this book. It has a well done index, a very extensive bibliography, and a nice feel to the book. The book is set in Fourier Type and is quite easy to read. It is printed by Yale University Press. It is an excellent book well worth reading.

Alberto Manguel's "A Reader on Reading" was not quite what I expecting. I thought that it would be a collection of essays and reviews about various books and/or authors, with his usual interesting comments. Instead, this collection of essays covers a variety of topics-politics, current events, history, religion, mythology, e-books, and more. The essays do have some connection to books or literature, in some way. These essays were written from the late 1990s through 2010, when the book was published.
You learn that Manguel loves Lewis Carroll's Alice books (every section and chapter has a quote and illustration from one of the Alice books), he believes Homer was not a real person but created as necessity to fill in a gap (which saddens me), that during an emergency surgery that required a 10-day hospital stay his only book of choice was Don Quixote (which I still have not read, but certainly plan to), and that he hates "American Psycho" by Bret Ellis, preferring to throw it out rather than giving it away to someone (no plans to read that book!).
This is not a book to sit down and read cover-to-cover, plan to read the essays at different sittings and different times, a chapter here, a chapter there. I even re-read some of the chapters after I had already read the whole book because they should be savored, listened and paid attention to, and enjoyed.
Some of my favorite chapters include "The Blind Bookkeeper" (mostly about Homer), "The Secret Sharer", not about Joseph Conrad but about book editors (did you know that editors exist only in North America and the British Commonwealth? It is changing in some places, but in most of the rest of the world they have proof-readers to correct errors only, not to cut and change for commercial reasons), "Reading White for Black" (about translators), "Art and Blasphemy" (religion and books), "End of Reading", and, especially, "Perseverance of Truth" which is about truth in literature and what happens to those who tell it (look out Socrates). Sadly, the world is getting far worse since this was written, here in the United States, and elsewhere.
When reading (and re-reading) the essays, I suggest noting down chapters you like, pages that seem significant, underline phrases that inspire, anger, or interest you, and like Manguel, write in the margins! The essays will inspire you to read other books as well, as I have already re-read the Alice books after I finished it...

يتحدث مانغويل وعبر مقالات عدة أو ما يشابه السيرة الذاتية عن رحلته مع الكتابة والقراءة منذ أن كان صغيرًا، فكان يذكر العديد من الكتب التي قرأها وتأثر بها وعن العديد من الكتّاب والشعراء مع تحليلاتٍ ونبذٍ عن حياتهم وإن لم تكن مج��ولة لشهرتهم كسقراط وبورخيس وديكارت وهوميروس ودانتي وثيربانتس لذا لم أجد أي جديدٍ في كتابه هذا، على الرغم من أنه قد صاغ فقراته بمزيجٍ من الفلسفة والنقد والتحليل لروايات عدة كآليس في بلاد العجائب والتي كانت لها حصة الأسد من الذكر في كتابه. والأدب السياسي والشعر لكن كانت جمله غارقة بالثقل نوعًا ما ولا أدري أكان للترجمة يدٌ في ذلك أم لا! كمقالة (تاريخ موجز للصفحة) .
وعلى الرغم من العنوان البرّاق ( فن القراءة) إلا أني لم أجد ما كنت أتوقعه، فقد كان انعكاس سطحي عن رؤيته هو دون أن أجد ما هو جديد يستحق التوقف والتفكير به، حتى مع مقالته ( ملاحظات بخصوص تعريف القارئ المثالي) فقد كانت لا تتعدى أفكار أنسان عادي بخلاف ما تعكسه نظرتي لمانغويل التي كنت قد رسمتها عنه سابقًا من خلال مكتبته الضخمة ونهمه للقراءة، لكن للأسف تلك النظرة قد تزعزعت ولا أظن بأني سأجد ما يفيد في بقية كتبه، لذا أكتفي بهذا الكتاب فقط.

i must admit, i was thoroughly disappointed with this book. i have read other books on books by manguel,such as "the library at night" and really enjoyed them.this book seems like a bunch of essays that has been cobbled together for the sole purpose of putting out a book.while the essays are grouped together by topic, they rarely seem to have much in common, and to be perfectly honest, many of them are just plain boring.not recommended.

This is my first Manguel book and I found it a good intro to his writing. I look forward to reading his other books, especially the two waiting on my shelf.

Most of the essays are interesting, though some are more esoteric and so harder to appreciate... or understand. I really liked the essays that dealt with the author's reflections on his upbringing in Argentina, on how reading reflects the self or society, or his literary critiques. His interpretation of Pinocchio makes me want to read the book, watch the movie, and see just how much a Disney movie can corrupt the original material.

Interesting overall, just about what you would expect with a collection of essays on reading (though they don't always directly relate to reading).
