Robin René Roberts (born November 23, 1960) is an American television broadcaster. Roberts is the anchor of ABC's morning show Good Morning America. After growing up in Mississippi and attending Southeastern Louisiana University, Roberts was a sports anchor for local TV and radio stations. Roberts was a sportscaster on ESPN for 15 years (1990–2005). She became co-anchor on Good Morning America in 2005. She has been treated for breast cancer and for myelodysplastic syndrome.
Though born in Alabama, Roberts grew up in Pass Christian, Mississippi, where she played basketball and tennis, among other sports. She attended Pass Christian High School and graduated as the class of 1979 salutatorian. She is the daughter of Lucimarian Tolliver and Colonel Lawrence E. Roberts. In a 2006 presentation to the assembled student body at Abilene Christian University, Roberts credited her parents as cultivating the "three 'D's: Discipline, Determination, and 'De Lord'." She is the youngest of four, following siblings Sally-Ann, Lawrence, Jr. (nicknamed Butch), and Dorothy. Her father was a pilot with the Tuskegee Airmen.
Roberts attended Southeastern Louisiana University in Hammond, Louisiana, graduating cum laude in 1983 with a degree in communication. She followed in the footsteps of her older sister Sally-Ann Roberts, an anchor at the CBS affiliate WWL in New Orleans.
She joined ESPN as a sportscaster in February 1990, where she stayed until 2005. She became well known on Sportscenter for her catchphrase, "Go on with your bad self!" Roberts began to work for ABC News, specifically as a featured reporter, for Good Morning America in June 1995. In 2001, Roberts received the Mel Greenberg Media Award, presented by the WBCA. For many years, Roberts worked at both ESPN and Good Morning America, contributing to both programs. During that time, she served primarily as the news anchor at GMA. In 2005, Roberts was promoted to co-anchor of Good Morning America. In December 2009, Roberts was joined by George Stephanopoulos as co-anchor of GMA after Diane Sawyer left to anchor ABC World News. Under their partnership, the Roberts-Stephanopoulos team led Good Morning America back to the top of the ratings; the program became the number-one morning show again in April 2012, beating NBC's Today, which had held the top spot for the previous 16 years.
Roberts is a practicing Christian. In 2007, Roberts was diagnosed with an early form of breast cancer. She underwent surgery on August 3, and by January 2008 had completed eight chemotherapy treatments, followed by 61⁄2 weeks of radiation treatment.
In 2012, she was diagnosed with myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS), a disease of the bone marrow. Be the Match Registry, a nonprofit organization run by the National Marrow Donor Program, experienced a 1,800% spike in donors the day Roberts went public with her illness. She took a leave from GMA to get a bone marrow transplant, and went home in October 2012. She returned to GMA on February 20, 2013. Roberts received a 2012 Peabody Award for the program. The Peabody citation credits her for "allowing her network to document and build a public service campaign around her battle with rare disease" and "inspir[ing] hundreds of potential bone marrow donors to register and heighten[ing] awareness of the need for even more donors." ESPN awarded its Arthur Ashe Courage Award to Robin Roberts at the 2013 ESPYs.
I don't know much about Robin Roberts, but I was taken by the summary on the back of the book. Because I'm a sucker for memoirs of people facing tough odds, I thought I'd love this book. Unfortunately, I didn't make it out of the first chapter. The book is haphazard, poorly written, and in dire need of a good editor.
Examples: the anecdotes make little or no sense, and don't seem to apply to the "rule" being presented. One thing that really got me was in the first chapter, "Rule #1: Position Yourself to Take the Shot," Roberts writes that getting up more than getting knocked down was "the number-one rule I live by." It couldn't be too important, though, or perhaps she would have included it in her list of eight rules the book is focuses on.
Robin Roberts is my hero. I have admired her from her rise from ESPN to GMA, and was happy for her when she got the permanent job on GMA, then promoted to anchor. With her battle against cancer, I admired her even more. She is strong, and so REAL for the public. This book is a little bit preachy, and she isn't a great writer, but I enjoyed it throughly just because of the history of Robin. Her respect for her parents is admirable, and her parent's respect for their children should be admired. Every parent should read this book as a "how to" manual. I enjoyed this book as a biography on Robin, but it is also an uplifting and peaceful read. Will keep it on my shelf to page through every now and then.
Robin Roberts is a sportscaster for ESPN. This was an inspirational book that was easy to read. I had not seen her on television but I am now more familiar with her work after the description in her book. Ms. Roberts was a standout high school basketball player, a college basketball star, later an ESPN host and co-anchor of Good Morning America. After being diagnosed with brest cancer she renamed her book "Eight Rules to Live By" adding that a person should be open for change and the unexpected. I enjoyed learning more about the world of sports and the life of Robin Roberts and the strides she's made in the media.
Robin Roberts is an amazing individual, and such an inspiration. Her "rules" are filled with good advice, but at the conclusion, she suggests that the reader make their own rules. In spite of the hardships and health issues she has endured, she is amazingly positive. I have always enjoyed watching her, but after reading her story I admire her even more...her courage, her faith, her family relationships, her insight, her talent... What a beautiful person (inside as well as out)!
Her writing style makes the book very easy to read, to relate to, and wanting to know even more. I hope she writes another, beginning where this book ends.
WOW! What an amazing book! I am a big fan of Robin Roberts. She writes with such poise and class. I had a feeling this book was going to be inspirational. I just didn't realize I would feel like my best friend was happily guiding me with some great suggestions to live by. All of which seem to be quite easy to follow. Robin Roberts is one of those people I love inviting into my home each weekday morning on GMA. Robin is a force to be reckoned with. She will make you laugh and cry all at the same time while making you feel like you are one in a million!
This was a birthday gift from Dianne... we are both big GMA fans. I really enjoyed reading about Robin's thoughts. The only thing that is left out is whether or not she is or has ever been in a romantice relationship. She refers to all her family and some friends, but leaves this out... makes me wonder why.
Book is about Good Morning America's Robin Roberts and her fight to get what she wanted out of life. Rule number eight was recently added after she was diagnosed with breast cancer. Good advice to given and awesome to hear that not everyone in the high positions we all dream of got there easily. Positive reinforcement to keep pushing ourselves to get where we truly want to be!
Poignant, poised, and purposeful! An overall fast and interesting read. Roberts' style of writing is engaging and conversational. She makes you think, but steers clear of being pushy with her rules. Roberts makes a point to tell her readers to make their own rules, that her personal rules are just an example of how to construct your own set of life-guides.
Wow! What an inspiring book! I recommend this book to EVERYONE! There aren't a lot of books in which I encourage all my friends and family to read, but this is a great book. If you only read one book this year, please make it this one, you won't be sorry!
Robin writes a positive, uplifting book sharing her experiences in work, family and friends. I've always admired Ms. Roberts and it was enjoyable to get to know her background and what grounds her in life. It's inspiring to read her "rules" and get her insight to in life's lessons.
Heartwarming and poignant, a success story based on positive values, positive outlook by an inspiring, likable news and sports personality. This book is even more poignant because we now know that Robin Roberts continues to fight for her life.
Robin Roberts is an inspiration for all women. She makes you feel like you are a part of her family whether it be while reading her book or watching her on TV. This book is an easy read just filled with common sense ways to live your life. More people should follow her example.
What a great, inspirational book. She emphasizes the fact that she has been successful but that your path to success May not look like hers; in fact, it probably won't. This was an easy read that has practical lessons about life and living.
I just love Robin! She just seems like the kind of person you'd love to hang around with. Really enjoyed this book about her growing up and lessons learned.
I've always been a fan of Robin Roberts. A Christian, female, former basketball player, that did ESPN and then anchored my favorite "news" show, GMA... love her! I saw her speak once at National FFA Convention and that sealed the deal. She speaks like she could be anyone you know, a dear friend. Fun to learn more about her with a dose of life lessons on the side.
Loved it! Bought four copies for my daughters. This is an excellent book for women of all ages - uplifting, promising, hopeful, educational. A guide for all women to live by.
I thought this was a very down to earth, very inspirational book that anyone could follow and implement in their own lives. Robin Roberts is an amazing woman.
