Five stars to all of Ruth Heller's parts of speech books and almost all her science ones. (And four stars to the rest.) Somehow I never saw this one before, and I learned something: flies, even the ones that look like bees, have only one pair of wings, but bees have two pairs.
That's the thing with her books: they're not only absolutely beautiful, even to the point of being art for the wall, but they're educational for a variety of levels of knowledge. Even though I learned something new, this book is accessible even to pre-schoolers.
Although this was included with our homeschool curriculum, we misplaced this book and found it a month after we did the rest of our unit on butterflies. We enjoyed the book quite a bit, although we had a hard time spotting the bug hiding among the twigs on the blossoming tree. Leave it to my husband to spot it instantly! I just didn't expect it to be that large!
I had this as a kid and was thrilled when my dad found our copy so that I could read it to my kids. I still love the illustrations because they show how clever these animals are at camouflage!
