Good overview of the IDT field. Less a textbook with chapters and more a series of related and topical journal articles.

The book provides a good understanding of the history of Instructional Design and most of the current trends in instructional design. Section VII (Chapters 26-28) contain solid advice for those entering, or thinking of entering, the IDT field. The reference sections of each chapter are a good source for further independent research.

I would have given three stars, but chapter 14 (which I had to present to my class) was brutal. So I'm retaliating with a lower rating score.
