An overview of the most common manufacturing techniques for low-volume production batches and prototyping runs. This is a nice side table book that explains the processes visually and captures the basics. It is a good book for designers who tend to be biased towards certain production techniques while sometimes it is better to think a bit more out of the box and consider the options that Thompson offers, a capable industrial designer himself.

For the < 200 pages space, it could have packed a bit more information such as design guidelines, limitations, and other variations on processes such as twin-sheet forming for thermoforming, more types of welding and woodworking processes, forging, foam molding, textiles, and DLP, FDM, and EBM for 3D printing. It also does not include rotational molding and (co-)extrusion which have low tooling costs and are therefore suitable for small batches, as well as printing processes. A nice but slightly incomplete collection.

La producción de piezas industrializadas en bajos volúmenes o la construcción de prototipos o pequeñas series es siempre un gran reto para cualquier diseñador industrial. Encontrar soluciones a problemas que requieren de pocos ejemplares y hacerlo con calidad y certeza de ejecución no es fácil.
Rob Thomson, actualmente diseñador en jefe de Nokia y anteriormente investigador y maestro en el Royal College of art y en Central Saint Martins, ha creado una guía para diseñadores considerando procesos y técnicas para los prototipos y las series de bajo volumen. ya había yo reseñado en podio dos de estas guías la que se refiere a procesos productivos para mobiliario http://www.podiomx.com/2013/01/the-ma... y la que habla de materiales y procesos sustentables http://www.podiomx.com/2013/05/the-ma...)
En esta ocasión Thompson centra su investigación en procesos y técnicas que me parecen muy adecuados y realistas para una realidad como la de nuestro país. El resultado es un manual práctico de excepcional contenido y calidad. El libro se divide en tres secciones, la primera habla de los procesos de formado, la segunda de las técnicas de unión y la última parte se refiere los procesos de acabados.
Cada técnica o proceso viene acompañado de ejemplos prácticos con casos reales de manufactura de productos de diseño avanzado.
Queda más que claro que una producción de bajo volumen o la elaboración de un prototipo no impide crear diseños de primer nivel y es evidente que esta guía puede ser de gran ayuda para iniciados como para aquellos que desean enterarse de los recursos indispensables para lograr el reto de la producción de bajo volumen.
