Al Sarrantonio was an American horror and science fiction writer, editor and publisher who authored more than 50 books and 90 short stories. He also edited numerous anthologies.
I had some trouble at first with the fact that they were cat people, but I really enjoyed this book. It was fast paced and not too heavy on the science parts, I can't wait to read the second book.
Haydn of Mars is a fun light and entertaining read. This space opera full of derring-do and fun characters would be a perfect YA selection except for the number of bodies piled up in the course of the story. In this first of a series I would become interested in characters that were introduced, who would play important parts in the plot, and who would then fall into dangerous conflicts, and be killed. Young pregnant Haydn goes on the run from the usurpers and rallies an army as she travels across the planet. From being alone and vulnerable over the course of the book she becomes the most powerful force, on the planet, and leads her combined army against her enemies. Over all, the story held my attention for the one day of sitting in airports, riding planes and shuttle buses. The central character of Haydn, the deposed young queen, was able to hold my interest and goodwill to the last page.
Very nice of tales of cat like people living on Mars millions of years from now. Haydn is the queen to be of Mars, but is a staunch republican. When another woman warrior of the F'rar tribe wants to grab power and tries to kill her, she succeeds in fleeing and travels on Mars, growing whilst travelling and becoming a woman. Many marvels are shown to her and a faint link to the past and there a hint that man was there. Maybe in the other 2 books of the series there is more.
As usual, the imagination of the author Al Sarrantonio is boundless and this is only the first of the trilogy, already great. Makes you wonder what’s coming next in this science fiction adventure novel.
Harriet Fraser narrated this one beautifully for each of the characters in this creation.
The first in a trilogy. The idea here is really good. I didn't find the plot tremendously compelling but I liked the charaters. I was hoping for more swashbuckling along the lines of John Carter of Mars or other Sword & Planet fiction and I didn't get that.
