The Predator was first published in 2001. A relative was getting rid of his copy, and I jumped on it as I love this author - delighted to find one I hadn't previously read. I loved it!
Yes, it's over 20 years old, and financial trading, communications, cities - everything has changed, but at the heart of it the plot is excellent and the characters both likeable and interesting.
Five stars. Would I read it again? I think so, but to wait another 20 years would be a bit testing!

Dieses Buch ist im Vergleich zu den anderen Ridpaths (und ich spreche nur von den Finanzthrillern, die anderen lese ich gar nicht erst), die ich gelesen habe, eine Enttäuschung. Ich habe am 29. Juli schon einiges dazu geschrieben, daher hier nur: Das Ende ist echt peinlich, ja, ich habe mich für den Autor geschämt, wie bescheuert, unglaubwürdig, primitiv er das Buch zu Ende führt... Hauptsächlcih beziehe ich mich auf den völlig unglaubwürdigen totalen Sinneswandel von Megan innerhalb von Sekunden - sowas gibt es sonst nur in "3-Groschen-Romanen" (nicht, dass ich schon welche gelesen hätte, aber so stelle ich mir das vor, lol)... Schade!

Niet zo heel bijzondere financiële thriller van Ridpath. Hoewel financieel, het verhaal speelt zich weliswaar af in de wereld van de snelle beleggersjongens en -meisjes, maar het boek is vooral een doodgewone whodunnit. De plot is niet erg ingewikkeld en de karakters blijven nogal plat. Zwakste punt van het boek is wel dat het verhaal wordt verteld vanuit hoofdpersoon Chris, maar tegen het einde krijgen we opeens een switch tussen verschillende personen. Kennelijk wist Ridpath niet meer zo goed hoe hij hier een einde aan moest breien. Het boek gaat dan ook een beetje als een nachtkaars uit.

I'm normally quite fond of books by Michael Ridpath as I enjoy a good financial thriller, unfortunately however this was less of a financial thriller and more of a crime mystery taking place in a finance setting. Is there a difference? Well, most of the plot didn't hinge on any particular financial activity taking place, rather the investigation and mystery takes place somewhat on the periphery of the characters work.
Was quite disappointing compared to his other books such as the marketmaker & free to trade.

Terrible
Terrible book. I've read other books by this author and like them but this one is a long winded waste of time. I made it to 79% and am finally giving up. Wish i had made that decision back at the beginning. Really dumb premise with no sense of reality. People simply don't behave the way the author portrays them in this book.

This was a good book to read, it had mystery, which I enjoyed. I liked that we didn't find anything out till the main character did, which made me feel more involved, trying to figure it out myself too.

Hard to put down once the story gets moving.
I had this book a while before reading it but finally decided to take it on. I'm very glad I did. Good character development and believable story line. Recommended to people who enjoy white collar crime stories.

Fantastic Financial Thriller
A well written financial thriller with fascinating characters and great descriptions. Characters from across the globe with a well thought out plot make for a great read. The story line told by the different characters will keep you turning the page.

A murder mystery thriller set in the financial world. I enjoyed it, but if the world of finance leaves you cold, you might be better off looking elsewhere.

Fünfter Streich des Börsen-Grisham, der diesem Etikett in diesem Buch vollkommen gerecht wird. Das Programm, eine Art 10 Kleine Negerlein unter den Trainées von Bloomfield-Weiss ist formal sogar gelungener als der Marktmacher, allerdings mit einem Helden ohne die Ecken und Kanten und relativ frei von der Faszination des Handels. Die Adrenalinorgien vor dem Terminal bleiben aus. So rasch es sich auch runterlesen ließ, desto klarer wurde mir, um wie viel besser der Marktmacher war, auch wenn man sich immer wieder über das unconditional behaviour eines ins Investmant-Haifischbecken geratenen Slawisten wundern oder ärgern kann (Die ausführliche Rezi von 2012 habe ich ja gepostet.
Kaum gönnt sich der stets vorsichtig agierende Chris Czszypiorski mal einen zehntägigen Ski-Urlaub, da kauft Partnerin Lenka während seiner Abwesenheit einen unverantwortlichen Riesenposten einer windigen Mobilfunkfirma und eröffnet auch noch ein Büro in Prag. Doch ehe sie ihm auch nur ein Wort erklären kann, wird sie auf offener Straße und vor seinen Augen erstochen.
Die nächsten Tage befindet sich das dubiose Eureka-Papier im Sinkflug und Chris sieht sich auch sonst mit dem Vertrauensverlust seiner Klienten, die Lenka aus der Hand gefressen haben, konfrontiert. Zumal Chris einst als Bauernopfer für einen 600-Millionen-Verlust bei Bloomfield-Weiss gegangen wurde, da der Hauptverantwortliche als systemrelevant eingestuft wurde.
Lenka und Chris hatten sich vor zehn Jahren bei einem Trainée-Programm von Bloomfield-Weiss kennen gelernt, an dessen Ende das letzte Viertel keine Zukunft bei dem Börsenriesen haben sollte. Doch statt sich in den angepeilten Konkurrenzkampf verwickeln zu lassen, hatte Chris eine Lerngruppe initiiert um seinen schwächeren Freund Duncan durchzubringen, Lenka, die später als Drittbeste abschließen sollte, hatte sich ebenso an ihr beteiligt wie die Amerikaner Eric und Alex und der Eton-Absolvent Ian, der mit Chris und und Duncan zum Londonder Kontigent gehört.
Die Solidarittät zahlt sich für die meisten aus, Eric wird Bester, Chris kommt auf Platz 14 ins Ziel, doch Glückspilz Duncan, der bei Lenka landen konnte, schmiert vollkommen ab. Denn als er zu sehr klammert, hat die pragmatische Tschechin, die von einer zeitlich überschaubaren Affäre ausging, dem unverbesserlichen Monogamisten einen Korb gegeben.
Nicht viel besser steht es um Alex, der seine Kunst an den Nagel gehängt hat, um die Pflege seiner an Krebs erkrankten Mutter als Börsianer zu finanzieren. Trotz zahlreicher Fehltage ist ist er zwar noch über dem Strich, wird aber nicht übernommen, die Gründe dafür wird Chris erst zehn Jahre später erfahren. Zu diesem Zeitpunkt ist Alex ebenso lange tot.
Zum Abschluss des Programms lädt der reiche Eric seine Lerngruppe auf einen Bootstrip um Long Island ein. Als Lenka, um Duncan ein für allemal klar zu machen, dass es aus ist, demonstrativ mit Alex herum macht, kommt es zur Katastrophe. Der stark angetrunkene Duncan stößt seinen Rivalen über Bord. Eric, Ian und Duncan springen hinterher, doch Alex wird, sobald er wieder an die Oberfläche kommt, von einem anderen Schwimmer unter Wasser gedrückt.
Die Suche nach dem Mörder und die Aufdeckung der Hintergründe, in deren Verlauf sich heraus stellt, dass Bloomfield-Weiss gezielt Psychopathen als neue Alpha-Tiere oder Überbroker gesucht hat, bestimmt die letzten zwei Drittel des Buches. Allerdings lässt Ridpath zu Beginn des vierten Teils die Maske fallen und zeigt den Psychopathen und genialen Intriganten bei der Arbeit, während die anderen Überlebenden einander verdächtigen. Der Showdown, indem alle Illusionen und falschen Anschuldigungen gegenstandslos werden, nimmt exakt vier Seiten in Anspruch, das Schlussidyll fällt leider aus.
Fazit (ACHTUNG SPOILERGEFAHR, AUCH WENN KEINE NAMEN GENANNT WERDEN)
Ein schlüssig durchkonstruierter Thriller für dessen Raffinesse man dem Autor beim gelegentlichen Zurückblättern immer wieder auf die Schulter klopfen möchte. Im Kontext des Gesamtwissens gewinnt z.B. die Aussage „Ich will auf meine Weise Erfolg haben“ eine ganz andere, weit weniger menschenfreundliche Aussage als in einer Lerngruppe.
Allerdings hat das Buch einen großen Schönheitsfehler, denn im politischen korrekten Krimi ist der Republikaner immer der Bösewicht.
Und wenn einer der Kandidaten bei erster Gelegenheit als Busch-Wahlhelfer geoutet wird und im weiteren Verlauf seine gesamte Liebes- und Lebensplanung darauf ausrichtet, eines Tages Präsident zu werden, dann trägt auch der smartestes Blender von Anfang an ein riesengroßes Schurkenschild um den Hals.

Chris and Lenka met when they were both trainees with Bloomfield Weiss and now run their own company. When Lenka is murdered it seems to link back to a tragic accident on board a boat when they were trainees many years ago. What did really happen on the boat and who seems determined to kill everyone who was there?
This book invites you into the world of high finance with everyone at pains to be the most ruthless and feared investment banker. Taking us from London to Prague and back to New York its a murder mystery rather than a financial thriller.
The characterisation is rather weak at times and there is no real development, ironically the most interesting character is Lenka who is killed off at the beginning so we only learn about her in flashback.
There seemed little plot just a series of people, mainly Chris, running around trying to make sense of events around him while trying to stay alive. Good try but could do better

Wow, this was a great mystery. It was the first mystery where you learned the dreadful who done it along with the main character of the book.
The author truly invites you into their slice of life, not only to look but to sit down in their favorite chair to curl up in. I am afraid of saying too much more for I do not wish to spoil the story for any one. But there is one thing for sure. I have a new mystery author that I will be encouraged to read more of.
I hope you will enjoy as much as I have.

Another solid whodunnit from Ridpath. You know what you're getting with these novels. Nothing fancy and the protagonist is always the same person with a different name. They are a likeable and good person even though they are in the financial services industry to make a lot of money. Yes it's all a bit of escapism and the endings can be a little OTT but for some summer reading with brain dis-engaged they are always fun.

Great story of international murders and friends suspecting each other.
Great story and plot, interesting and believable character's. Reason I am giving only four stars is beginning seemed to be slow and a little confusing, took me awhile to understand storyline. Overall was entertaining and I enjoyed it.

Believable picture of modern materialistically-oriented investment bankers/bond traders (author was one in the nineties) but predicated on a slightly unbelievable threat to villain. He really needed to do nothing but deny. A pacey enough read.

Enjoyable enough thriller. I couldn't connect with any of the characters mind you, perhaps maybe that's because Investment bankers are not the most "likeable" of characters (apologies to any investment bankers reading this)
