Learning about interjections and conjunctions is fun with this dazzlingly illustrated book from Ruth Heller's World of Language series. The spare yet information-packed text is brought to life by eye-popping artwork. Colorful dragons, mysterious sea creatures, and rainbow-striped zebras leap from the pages. Simple yet clever, this inventive book will have readers saying "Yippee! Whoopee! And Hallelujah!"
"Youngsters will delight in the rhyming text, which artistically weaves information through vibrant illustrations." -School Library Journal
The World of Language Series would be great to pull out with students in upper elementary. The pictures in the books are bright/bold/eye-catching and the text when you really think about it is outstanding. I think I learned something new or was reminded of something as I read through them. I think the adjectives book is my favorite but this is a close 2nd.
We've enjoyed reading a lot of the books written by Ruth Heller - the lyrically rhyming narrative and bright, colorful illustrations are certainly appealing and the educational content is often helpful for parents and children (I got a few good reminders of some of the more obscure grammatical rules.) At times I feel there is a disparity between the advanced level of the grammar being presented and the target audience of the book, but on the whole, we really enjoy the books in the World of Language series.
I recently got our girls hooked on Schoolhouse Rock, introducing them to videos that I loved as a child and bringing them to a local play that recreated the videos, too. So when we read this book, we couldn't help but break out into song - "...so when you're happy (Hooray!) or sad (Aw!), or frightened (Eeeeek!) or mad (Rats!)..." and "...Conjunction Junction, what's your function..." We have really enjoyed watching the videos and I love that this book was a great way to reinforce the lessons. Hooray for fun songs and books that are educational, too!
This is another in Heller's series of illustrated guides to parts of english speech written for young children. There are about 8 or 9 of these books (one each on nouns, adjectives, verbs, adverbs, interjections, pronounds, collective nouns and more). In each book in the series Heller presents the topic so clearly and so well that everyone, adults and children alike, come away with a solid understanding of the subject. While I did moderately well in english in grade school, junior high and high school, there were various details about some aspects of grammer that I never grasped very well. I wish Heller had written these books back when I was young.
The other astounding and remarkable aspect to this series of books is that Heller also did all of the illustrations herself. I believe that is something of a rarity for an author to create an illustrated book and to do both the text and the illustrations. Heller's command of the art of illustration is as good as her command of the english language.
If you were ever, or perhaps still are, fuzzy about any aspect to parts of english speech, take a look at these books by Heller.
Grammar picture books are fabulous! It was really nice to have this book with all these example of interjections! I don't know if I ever learned "interjections" as a kid. . . but I get it now. :)
Ruth Heller has a whole bunch of these books that help with grammar--
This book is more informative than a true story, but I think it would be really useful in a classroom. The teacher could read it aloud, or it could serve a really fantastic role as a reference book in a grammar center. It provides some great examples in a context that students would understand.
The pictures are fantastic and are used in such a way as to really demonstrate Interjections and conjunctions. I would definitely use this in the classroom.
I am very pleased to have completed this series. As an ELA teacher, the accessibility of parts of speech is vital to my students, so I really dig the illustrations, rhymes, mnemonics, and simple definitions. I felt that this book had more dense text per page than normal, so it may be overwhelming to some readers. However, it is still invaluable.
Fun overview of interjections and conjunctions... Definitely for an upper elementary audience. This book was originally published over 20 years ago and you can definitely tell--it could do with an update.
