In any world, even the most terrible, survival is possible if you have a plan and stick rigidly to it, if you aspire to achieve your goal without looking back, and most importantly, if you do not settle for the small, but constantly strive toward the large. Number 11 was once regarded by the inhabitants of the Outskirts as an easy target who would not survive a single day. Now the name of Elb is uttered with fear and respect. And those who previously considered themselves the top dogs in that district now keep their own counsel concerning him, for the simple reason that the dead do not speak. The system is harsh but fair, and if you are determined to move forward and raise your level, you will have to grab every opportunity. But to become the new king of the Outskirts is too small a goal, and besides, sooner or later you will be eaten by other, bigger predators. The time has come to venture into places given a wide berth by others due to their perennial fear.

Nullform #2 by Dem Mikhailov, the second installment in the Nullform series:

Nullform #2 continues the harrowing journey of Elb, a goblin protagonist navigating the treacherous Outskirts of a dystopian world governed by an unforgiving System. Mikhailov delves deeper into the RealRPG mechanics, presenting a narrative that intertwines survival, ambition, and the relentless pursuit of power.

World-Building & Setting

The novel expands upon the grim landscape introduced in the first book. The Outskirts are depicted as a perilous zone where the System's influence wanes, and chaos reigns. Mikhailov's portrayal of areas like Drainagetown and the poisonous fog under the bridge adds layers of complexity to the setting, emphasizing the constant dangers Elb faces.

Character Development

Elb's transformation from a perceived weakling to a formidable figure is central to the narrative. His evolution is marked by strategic decisions, alliances, and confrontations that test his resolve. The respect he garners, even from former adversaries, underscores his growth and the shifting dynamics within the Outskirts.

RealRPG Elements

Mikhailov skillfully integrates RealRPG mechanics into the storyline. The progression system, tasks assigned by the System, and the concept of leveling up are woven seamlessly into the plot, enhancing the immersive experience for readers familiar with gaming structures.

Thematic Exploration

Themes of survival, ambition, and the moral ambiguities of power are prevalent throughout the novel. Elb's journey raises questions about the cost of advancement and the ethical compromises one might make in a world where the line between right and wrong is blurred.

Comparative Analysis

Compared to its predecessor, Nullform #2 delves deeper into the complexities of its world and characters. While the first book set the stage, this installment intensifies the stakes, offering a more intricate and engaging narrative that challenges both its protagonist and readers.

Verdict: Nullform #2 is a compelling continuation of Dem Mikhailov's RealRPG series, offering a rich blend of action, strategy, and character development. It's a must-read for fans of the genre seeking a story that combines gaming elements with profound thematic depth.

Rating: 4/5 – A gripping tale of survival and ambition in a meticulously crafted dystopian world.

The story reminds me of the old computer game Planetscape Torment as the protagonist is awakened (presumably after his death) in a body consisting of seemingly random sewn-together body parts. Without much introduction he is thrown into a truly dystopian underworld to fend for his continued existence.

The serie started very mysterious and with huge potential. However, after finishing the third book i must say that i am a bit underwhelmed. There are no really stunning or even more than mildly interesting revelations or discoveries so far and the characters stay very two dimensional. When you compare the series to similar series (for example the Metro 2033 series) the Nullform series is even quite boring unfortunately. The increasing drug abuse of the main character (at mostly really inconvenient times) in book 3 to get back some memories was rather anticlimatic for me as it did not (as intented by the author) make him more interesting to me but rather show that he is not the great tough leader he pretends to be but only an irresponsible junkie.

The whole concept of amputating limbs for laziness seems quite counterproductive if the system needs worker drones desperately. There would be way better ways to motivate workers.

I received a review copy of this book.
The second book in this world is just as chaotic as the first, only in this one, we see our main characters beginning to impose some structure on the system, which is a good thing, since Mother really desires order.
It's not clear where things are going just yet, but we can make some guesses, though as strange as this world is, I'd really refrain from speculation myself, because I'm sure I'll be surprised no matter what I expect to happen here.
If you found the first book interesting, you'll likely enjoy this book. If you found the first one odd, congratulations, you're not alone. On the other hand, nobody said a world had to be pleasing and orderly to make sense, and as strange as it is, this world does indeed make sense, even if it's in an odd and twisted manner. It makes for a strange tale, but in the LitRPG genre, strange isn't all that far off the mark.
The story maintains it's minimal LitRPG parts, so die hard LitRPG fans probably won't find this series to their liking, but regardless of that, the story is one that is worth reading, and might just shake up your idea of what makes for a good (or odd) story.

With the world in place, this chapter featured Elb stepping up his badassery. I enjoyed this book about as much as the first, though I'm knocking a star off for lackluster editing.

I'm seriously tired of reading things like "Elb sat next to the goblin" - where "goblin" sometimes refers to his party member, but sometimes it is actually introducing a new character to the sceneand Mikhailov without any preamble. It's also hard to tell sometimes if he's in a flashback, seeing something for real, or seeing a painting on a wall. I feel like better editing would have prevented these issues.

There are also some repeated words or minor grammatical issues that an editor should catch. Elb seems to have quite the vocabulary, with me using Kindle to look up several words, but then I was baffled when he says "move your appendices" and I'm 99% sure that should have said "appendages" which made me feel like there was some inconsistent character presentation.

There were some seeds planted that seemed to have time to develop, but were just put off- medical procedures, dubious characters...

Lastly, the feeding sessions are disgusting. Quit it.

“This was a fun book. I am glad that I read it. You should try it too.”

I am not going to share my reasoning, thoughts on the book, or any opinions that would influence your decision to read it. I am simply saying that I liked it. I would like you to read it and make your own decision. After all, you are a much better judge of what you will like than anyone here.

I will happily discuss the book with you on Goodreads if you are so inclined. As always, I am open to debates and arguments, but also vain enough to seek acknowledgement, so feel free to roast me or applaud my efforts. Either is acceptable, because if you are paying attention to me then you are at least considering the book. And THAT my friends is exactly why you see my comments here.

(Yep...hit with the banhammer.)

Cheers

(Audiobook review. Great narration and mixing)

Overall good and entertaining but definitely has a bit of sequelitis as it's starting and ending both have a bit of a hard break . Still interested in continuing the adventure :)

Intriguing

What a strange intriguing, fascinating world!

Creating a Tolkenesque world in a future world, that is based on technology, but is decaying.

Trolling

This is a strange yet fun series. Some of the dialogue throws me off because of the translation maybe but it’s keeping me entertained.

I do not like lit rpg...this is a cut above.

These stories have ALL the elements that I complain about in RPG - lit. Lot's of focus on stat charts, heads up displays, etc that can detract from a story. This is one of the few that I have truely enjoyed.
