The seventh book in this very readable series and every one with the delightful Muesli on the cover. The little cat plays a role in every book - this time she is being abducted by Mrs Purdy!

In Another One Bites the Crust ( who thinks up these titles?) Gemma buys a stunning new dress to wear to the ball but ends up discovering a dead body instead. It belongs to a famous TV chef and as big fans of his show, the Old Biddies are quickly on the case. Of course they manage to involve Gemma in funny but embarrassing situations as they set about their investigations. In the end it is Gemma herself who uncovers the culprit but she does share most of her information with boyfriend and cop, Devlin.

This is another well written and entertaining book in this series and I fully intend to keep reading them.

My Thoughts /

I feel good. Another cosy mystery all ticked off. Another One Bites the Crust is officially done and crusted. Oops, I mean, dusted. This series, written by Australian author, H.Y. Hanna, is chock-a-block filled with loveable quirky characters, each with their own unique personality. The mysteries are set in the historic city of Oxford and the English Cotswolds - which are brought to life with loving detail. The storyline is set out with clever plot twists and clues to help guide us towards the killer along the way. This delightful cosy series is interspersed with humour and a generous dollop of helpfulness, goodwill, and country grace. The book covers are too cute for words, with each book including a picture of Muesli the cat, who plays a part in every story. The only thing that would make this series better, would be to add a dog to the mix. Because. Well. IMHO. Dogs just make everything better, lol.

Two celebrity chefs. One 'ex'. One, ahem, 'sleezy' manager and a television film crew. One murder.

As she was getting ready for the Oxford charity ball, Gemma Rose was lamenting all those rich, buttery Chelsea buns' eaten the night before. Sucking in a breath, struggling to zip up her dress, she realised it was becoming an occupational hazard taste testing all those cake treats offered on the menu at the tearoom. Investigating a murder was the last thing on her mind. Right now, it was just trying to get into this dress!

Also attending the ball, is special guest, celebrity TV chef Josh McDermott. McDermott, who has a huge female following, will be doing a cooking presentation as part of the festivities. Nicknamed 'Posh McDishy', by his followers, it's McDermott's good looks, sex appeal and, more recently, his English custard tarts that have made him a household name. But when Gemma discovers the good chef slumped on the ground, behind his cooking set, just before his presentation - dead, we learn that the good chef might not have been such a good egg after all.

This instalment has most 'regulars' returning, as well, we meet a couple of new ones.

Mabel Cooke, Glenda Bailey, Florence Doyle, and Ethel Webb—four nosy octogenarians who ruled the roost in the little Cotswolds village of Meadowford-on-Smythe, where my tearoom was situated.

One of the side threads involves Gemma Rose (finally) meeting boyfriend, Detective Inspector Devlin O'Connor's mother, Keeley. Her own mother, meanwhile, is trying to set her up with the latest home 'must have'. And one of the Stables' Tearoom customers (Mrs Purdy) tries to catnap Muesli!

As with all good cosies, there are no graphic descriptions of bloodshed or violence here. All you will find in these pages are endearing characters, an entertaining mystery, and an abundance of calories! At the end of the book, Hanna has included a recipe for Custard Tarts, a quintessentially classic British dessert. Reading this series will make you want to come back for a second helping.

Another One Bites the Crust (you just sang that, didn’t you?) is the 7th book in the Oxford Tearoom series and it will leave you wanting to read the next!
Gemma and her friends are star struck when they meet some celebrity chefs but the fun is snuffed out when one of them is murdered! The old biddies have a few theories but so do Gemma and her best friend Cassie! Also thrown in is a slight case of cat-napping and you will even meet Devlin’s mom who is…um…quite interesting. I’ll let you come to your own conclusion on that one!
This series is as cozy as they come so there’s no gore or violence! Just lots of enticing dessert descriptions, some kooky characters, and an engaging well-planned mystery!
There are lots of twists and turns throughout so there’s a good chance end up reading this book in one sitting! As they say, bookmarks are for quitters!!

“Another One Bites the Crust” earns 5+/5 Dozens of Custard Tarts…Sinisterly Delicious!

Ok, so a diet of Chelsea buns, sticky toffee pudding, and Victoria sponge wasn’t the best idea, but Gemma Rose still needs to find a Cinderella-inspired ball gown that fits. No fall back “little black dress” will do for the annual Oxford ball. But despite dietary choices, the fashion dilemma, and a doily explosion courtesy of the “Old Biddies,” the tearoom has been doing very well including a recent blog review raving about “The Little Stables” custard tarts and comparing them to those created by celebrity TV chef Josh McDermott. WOW! Here we go with another marvelous H.Y. Hanna page turner to enjoy. It is a big ‘coup’ to be compared to such a brilliant chef, but McDermott turns out not to be a cordial mentor-style personality…the accusations of recipe stealing and using McDermott’s name for self promotion, women scorned, competing chefs, and then…murder. Yeah with a big fist pump! H.Y. Hanna, has ‘baked up' another clever murder mystery supporting the idea ‘Karma’ exists…at least in literature, but with enough twists and turns, and ample motives and suspects to a final reveal, with Gemma often in peril, to challenge and delight anyone’s inner amateur detective. Her characters, albiet well developed, continue to grow and entertain, Gemma’s and Devlin’s romance may be derailed, and Muesli always there to ‘meorrw’ in some bother all to create a marvelous story topped off with your own easy-to-follow recipe for Egg Custard Tarts! Yummm!

I am a self-proclaimed Anglophile which explains one of the reasons I’ve become such a big fan of H.Y. Hanna’s Oxford Tearoom Mystery series, and as a matter of fact, also her Bewitched by Chocolate series which is set in the Cotswolds. With each book we are treated to a variety of typical British words, but we’re not left to our own devices or need to Google since she provides a Glossary of British Terms along with special terms used in Oxford University. But, it is fascinating and informative to also be treated to some typical or traditional British tearoom culture from the perfect pot of tea to the best tea sandwiches to serve. In this story Hanna gives us an excellent understanding of scones in England vs the United States, how clotted cream is made, and addressing the debate over whether scones should be slathered first with jam (Cornwall-style) or first with clotted cream (known as Devonshire cream tea). Either way they are best accompanied by a pot of tea.

Another One Bites the Crust by H.Y.Hanna is the 7th book in the Oxford Tearoom Mysteries series. A celebrity chef, guest at an Oxford Summer Ball, is murdered by a tampered whisk and tearoom owner Gemma Rose is again in the midst of another murder investigation. An entertaining and enjoyable cozy mystey where the old biddies again provide plenty of entertainment. Gemma also meets Devlin's mother as their relationship progresses. A captivating and fun mystery.

I received a free copy from the author and voluntarily reviewed this book.

This is one of my favorite cozy mystery series and I happily started reading this. Another One Bites the Crust is a great seventh book in this series. There's a new murder mystery, more from the already familiar characters and a bunch of fun side plot lines. This book was so much fun and it felt like I flew through it. I really enjoyed it!

The mystery was a good one. From the start I was so sure I knew who the murderer was and then it turned out I was wrong. It was a great twist to find out who the murderer was and it all fell nicely on it's place. There was a hint we got earlier book and it was obvious it was a clue, but for a long time the main character and I both couldn't figure out the relevance of it. And then when we find out who the murderer was it all makes sense. It was great!

Besides the mystery, there is a bunch of side plot lines going on. Devlin's mother is visiting and meeting Gemma for the first time, Gemma's mother is trying to set her daughter up with some new products, there is a lady who tries to catnap Muesli and then there are the characters and possible suspects we meet that are play part of the mystery. I like how there is always something new going on in these books and they keep my attention with a great mystery and fun side plot lines.

I liked returning to Oxford and spending time with Gemma, her friends and family. We get to see the Old Biddies again, who try to help solve the murderer and even Cassie gets involved this time. I liked seeing how Gemma handled the meeting with Devlin's mom. There are some funny scenes throughout the book as well. Although it did bother me a bit that Gemma lied to Devlin twice.

Everything got wrapped up nicely toward the end and I really liked the epilogue and how one of the side plot lines got resolved exactly as I hoped. It was such an awesome scene and I was happy to see what happened.

To summarize: HY Hanna has written another great book! This seventh book in the Oxford Tearoom Mystery series is another success. I had fun trying to figure out who the murderer was and from the start I was so sure I knew who the murderer was. But there was a great twist and it turned out my guess was wrong, but once the murderer was revealed I did realize we got some hints in that direction. It was very well done. There is a bunch of fun side plot lines and it's great to spend some time with these familiar characters again and meet some new ones. All in all this was a great cozy mystery and I am already looking forward to the next book!

ANOTHER ONE BITES THE CRUST by H. Y. Hanna is the highly anticipated seventh book in her Oxford Tearoom Mystery series and it lived up to my expectations! This delightful cozy series features protagonist Gemma Rose, the owner of Little Stables Tearoom in Meadowford-On-Smythe along with her adorable cat, Muesli. Gemma is preparing for the grand summer ball of Oxford’s colleges. The author provides such inviting descriptions of the quaint and charming area, painting a vivid picture of each scene. Attending the ball and providing a special presentation is celebrity chef, Josh McDermott. While the general female viewing population adores him, Gemma finds he has a dark side when his manager accuses her of stealing the chef’s Egg Custard Tart recipe. But when Gemma stumbles across Josh who had been murdered at the ball, she’s pulled into the investigation. The plot is well-written with a good pace while the sub-plots are judiciously woven in, never detracting from the murder mystery. One of the sub-plots revolves around Gemma finally meeting Detective Inspector Devlin O’Connor’s (her boyfriend) mother. His mother is nothing like Gemma’s strict, straight-laced mother, and Ms. Hanna uses their interaction for added humor to the story.

Gemma’s friends, the four Old Biddies, decide they need to jump into the investigation as well, and it’s all Gemma can do to keep them out of trouble. This creates more humorous scenes that add to the appeal of this book. The four older ladies are quite the characters and in addition to their sleuthing take it upon themselves to provide an influx of crocheted doilies for Gemma’s tearoom, along with a pair of crocheted lace doily earrings for her to wear. I can imagine the look of disbelief on Gemma’s face when presented with the gifts. Yet, Gemma has a kind heart and would never say anything to hurt their feelings. Her compassionate personality also shows up when Muesli is cat-napped and Gemma comes up with a heartwarming solution. I also admire the author for bringing to the forefront the issue of feral cats and some of the ways to humanely control their population and provide care for them.

Gemma’s baker provides many lovely tea time treats for the tearoom that will make you drool as you read. Fortunately, the author has included a recipe for the classic English Egg Custard Tart that is central to the plot.

Congratulations to Ms Hanna – this latest book in the Oxford Tearoom series is a real winner! (Well, unless you’re the murder victim, of course.) As always, with a series like this, there are two reasons that readers want to get their hands on a new book. The first is the murder mystery, and the second is to meet up with all their favourite characters again. This book doesn’t disappoint on either score.

The murder mystery is believable and well constructed with plenty of suspects and possible motives. As usual the story has its twists, turns, and interesting characters, and keeps you guessing right until the end. Gemma, of course, manages to crack the case, but not without the help of her team including the nosy Old Biddies, her bossy mother, best friend Cassie, cute cat Muesli, and gorgeous detective boyfriend, Devlin. As always there are plenty of scrapes along the way, usually involving the Old Biddies. Readers should definitely be prepared for some “laugh out loud” moments. And finally Gemma gets to meet Devlin’s mother, who is quite a revelation in herself. With Gemma’s mother’s latest purchasing fetish, the Old Biddies’ antics, and Muesli becoming the object of a catnapping, there is so much to entertain in this delightful book.

I can highly recommend Another One Bites the Crust and am already looking forward to Gemma’s next case.

A review copy of this book was sent to me by the author. All of the above opinions are my own.

There's something to be said about an author who consistently writes cozy mysteries that I can devour in one sitting, and HY Hanna has done it once again! In Another One Bites the Crust, Ms. Hanna's 7th installment in the Oxford Tearoom Mysteries, Gemma finds yet another murder victim -this time at a ball at one of the Oxford colleges. Former Oxford University student and current celebrity chef Josh McDermott has returned to the Cotswolds to participate in a cooking demonstration, but before the presentation can take place he's found electrocuted to death by his own wire whisk. Gemma (of course!!!) feels as if it's her duty to solve the crime, despite the fact that her hunky CID boyfriend Devlin O'Connor is also investigating. Add Devlin's visiting mom, Keeley, and cat-napping tearoom customer Mrs. Purdy to the mix and Gemma really has her hands full. Recipes and a British slang glossary are included by the author, always fun to read these at the end of a story. Very highly recommended! A+

I am so happy that I discovered The Oxford Tearoom Mysteries and #7 does not disappoint. It's time for the summer ball in Oxford, and Gemma is looking forward to a chance to dress up for the evening and enjoying time out with her CID Inspector boyfriend, Devlin O'Connor. The ball they are attending is featuring an old alumni, celebrity chef Josh McDermott. The Old Biddies, Gemma's unpaid "help" at the Tearoom are all aflutter about his return, but not everyone is pleased. That becomes clear when Gemma stumbles over Josh's dead body. Since the four Old Biddies consider themselves great sleuths, Gemma is once again drawn into keeping them under control and out of the notice of Devlin.

Another One Bites the Crust is almost as good as a visit to Oxford in summer with its descriptions of life among the "dreaming spires." The mystery is full of twists, but the real charm lies in the characters we have come to love over the course of the series, and the mouth-watering treats that Dora, the Tearoom Baker, produces. This one includes a recipe for Custard Tarts, a quintessentially British classic. I am looking forward to the next visit with Gemma and friends. I received an advance digital copy from the author. The opinions are my own.

Another One Bites The Crust is the 7th book in the Oxford Tea Room Mystery series.
This is the best in the series so far.
I love Gemma, Cassie, Devlin, and of course, The Old Biddies, but Mrs. Purdy and Dev's mom, Keeley, are just as fun!
I loved the brutal honesty of Keeley and I was so happy to finally meet her.
She adds a colorful personality to this already fantastic series.

Getting ready for the summer ball is just one of the things happening in Gemma's life, she's also working hard in her tea shop, enjoying her romance with Devlin, and now, she's listening to all the ladies swoon over tv chef, Josh McDermott.
Not everyone loves the tv chef and when Gemma finds his dead body, she is certain that she can solve the mystery.
With the help of The Old Biddies and Cassie, Gemma is hot on the trail of the murderer and once again finds herself face to face with danger.

Fans of this series will love Another One Bites The Crust and will certainly be begging for more.

I voluntarily read an ARC of this book provided by the author.

Meet the moms.

The murder of an old college classmate of Cassie's turned self-centered chef's is one that takes many twists to get to the murderer. And as much as unraveling and trying to figure out the murderer kept me guessing, the real fun for me was when Devlin's mom met Gemma and then Gemma's mom having a Sunday tea to introduce Devlin's mom to her friends. As with all of H.Y. Hanna's characters I can picture them as real in my mind's eye and see the humor and even facial expressions. I only hope we get to see more of Devlin's mom and maybe interaction with Lincoln's mom Helen. Now that would be priceless.

Not bad.

I honestly didn’t really enjoy the mystery in this book, and I felt some of the animosity to the mother was unnecessary, but I didn’t like the story about the cats, and all the different side stories in this mystery. It was OK. I will definitely read more and I’m curious to see what happens next.

Cozy mysteries are something that I enjoy reading. I usually read series in order, but due to a reading challenge, I had to start the book from the seventh book of the Oxford Tearoom Mysteries.
I like our main character and how she solves the crime and helps her boyfriend, the detective in charge. I don't like the nosy Old Biddies, who I understand are keen to help resolve the crime, but how they do it can jeopardize the investigation.
Every time there is a scene with the Old Biddies, I said to myself oh! Here comes the trouble.
The truth is I was surprised who the murderer was; on the other hand, I can understand why that person acted with drastic action.
After reading the seventh book, I want to start with the first of the series and continue. It looks like a good cozy mystery, and the characters are loveable, except sometimes the nosy Old Biddies.

How strange. I recently read Till Death due us Tart by Elle Alexander and the next book I read was Till Death do us Tart by H.Y. Hanna. Not a common title, right? To my surprise, when I searched for "Another One Bites the Crust" by H.Y. Hanna, the same title came up once again by Elle Aleander!!!

I just finished reading the latest installment from the Oxford Tearoom series and thoroughly enjoyed this latest installment. It took me awhile for me to figure out who the murderer was! Well done, H.Y. Hanna!
The Summer Ball, a very formal event, is taking place at Oxford University. So that means gowns for the ladies and black ties for the gents. Amidst this glamour a murder takes place of a former student who is now a famous chef. But who did it? That is what Gemma is trying to figure out along with her friends. Not only does she have her hands full in trying to solve the murder, but she also has to keep the Old Biddies out of trouble, meet Dev's mom, try to get along with her own mom and keep track of Muesli. (A regular has taken a fancy to her and keeps trying to smuggle her home.) Yes, Gemma is very busy in this latest installment. No boredom here!
So come along and see if you can solve who did it before Gemma and try to keep up with her friends!

Gemma and the Old Biddies are at it again! In ANOTHER ONE BITES THE CRUST, Gemma attends a ball at Oxford, but her evening ends badly when she discovers celebrity chef Josh McDermott dead, electrocuted in his own demo kitchen. It is just Gemma’s luck that his death is no accident. Gemma, the Old Biddies, and even BFF Cassie, get in on the investigation. The Biddies are sure a rival chef is the culprit, but Cassie is confident that Josh’s ex-girlfriend did the deed. Gemma looks into everyone associated with Josh, including his producer and manager discovering that they all have good motives and opportunity. If only she can cut to the chaff and solve this business, all while dealing with a catnapper, her mother’s newest buying obsession, and finally meeting her love Devlin’s colorful mother.

As with the other books in the Oxford Tearoom Mystery Series, Hanna infuses this tale with plenty of laugh out loud moments. A scene with a joint and a room full of proper English matrons is hilarious. The recurring characters have become like old friends. Gemma has much more patience with her elderly friends’ antics than I ever would. Gemma is an intelligent sleuth; I just wish she would not make rash decisions. Of course, these decisions almost always lead to dangerous situations and, quite often, the aforementioned hilarity. It is great to get a look at Devlin’s mother Kaylee. She is definitely a breath of fresh air, and I hope we see her again.

The mystery is complex enough to be compelling reading with a variety of motives and suspects. I did guess the killer’s identity fairly early in the story, but his/her motive is elusive until the big reveal. And a clever motive it is! The subplot involving Muesli’s apparent catnapping is touching, and Kaylee’s visit is eye opening.

I always enjoy my time at the Little Stable Tearoom and get hungry just reading about all of the tasty treats they serve. Egg Custard Tarts are central to this mystery, and Hanna has generously included a recipe to satisfy readers’ certain cravings. ANOTHER ONE BITES THE CRUST is fun, light reading. Recommended.

I received a copy of this title from the author and voluntarily shared my thoughts here.

ANOTHER ONE BITES THE CRUST is book 7 in the Oxford Tearoom Mystery series.

The story revolves around Gemma Rose, owner of the Little Stables Tearoom in Meadowford-On-Smythe, the Oxford summer ball and the murder the celebrity chef Josh McDermott during the event. It’s a mystery that Gemma and her four friends, the Old Biddies, are determined to solve.

The story intriguingly leads you on several different avenues of suspects with funny mishaps along the way. Gemma’s beloved cat, Muesli is being stalked to be catnapped. She must find a way to keep the cat she loves while bringing happiness to an elderly lady who only wants someone to love and share her days with. She also meets her boyfriend, Detective Inspector Devlin O’Connor’s Mom who is nothing like she expected. She’s about as opposite from her own straight laced Mom as you can get. Their exchange is not only funny but delightful. The Old Biddies keep Gemma on her toes trying to keep both them and herself out of trouble while giving the reader a few chuckles along the way. She also doesn’t want the law after them for interfering with the investigation of a crime. Along the way, Gemma is accused of stealing an Egg Custard Tart recipe (recipe included at the back of the book) and has to defend her shop and employee’s recipes. Through it all, the show must go on.

This whodunit will keep you guess until the very end and even then you may be surprised when you find out you had figured it out wrong. I love a story that isn’t so predictable that you have it solved after just a few chapters. This book will not disappoint!

ANOTHER CRUST BITES THE CRUST can definitely be read as a standalone book. This was the first book in the series for me and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I know that now I not only want to read but MUST read the rest of the series. I’m also hoping that the series continues on and on and on!

I really love these little books. Gemma owns a tea shop in a little town on the outskirts of Oxford. Her best friend, Cassie works with her at her tea shop. Her boyfriend Devlin O'Connor is a CID at the police station in Oxford. Other notable characters are the Old Biddies, 4 little old ladies who like to stick their noses in other people's business on a consistent basis and then there is Gemma's mother who makes regular appearances in the books and I can't forget Muesli, Gemma's cat.
There is murder in every book and of course, Gemma seems to be the one to solve the crime each and every time. The beginning of this book begins with Gemma and Cassie getting ready for a ball at one of the Oxford campuses where a new chef will be doing demonstration that everybody wants to attend. He is the new hip and all the rage except he ends being the one murdered and it was definitely because his electrical whisk was tampered with and he was electrocuted and of course, Gemma is the one that finds the body. Gemma is also the one who figures out who murdered the chef as well and it is someone you would so least expect it to be.
Devlin's mother also comes to town and Gemma is SO worried about meeting his mother. But she is nothing like what Gemma expected. His mother was extremely young when she had him and she is rather a party animal and that bothers Devlin. He wants his mother to be more responsible. So the mother gets herself into some situations that Gemma has to try and get her out of. You should check out the series. Quick. reads but cute stories.

I began Another One Bites the Crust with a sigh of happiness as I was once again joining Gemma, Cassie, the Old Biddies, Gemma's mother, Devlin and other wonderfully written characters for an adventure at Oxford. When Gemma stumbles across the body of celebrity chef Josh McDermott at Oxford's Boscobel College at the Summer Ball, she once again finds herself right in the center of a murder mystery. Gemma has her hands full trying to stop the Old Biddies from their unconventional methods of investigating, finding suspects (there are several), all the while running her Little Stables Tearoom in Meadowford-on-Smythe and getting ready to meet boyfriend Devlin's unconventional mother.

I had a hard time putting down this book, and mystery of who killed Josh McDermott was well-written and kept me guessing until the very end. The characters are so real and relatable, and many seem like old friends to me. I love reading about Oxford, and H.Y. Hanna captures both the University with all of its Colleges and the town beautifully. I cannot wait for the next book in the series!

Another One Bites the Crust can definitely be read as a standalone, but the Oxford Tearoom Mystery books that proceed it are a delight, and I recommend every single one of them with pleasure and without reservation.

Disclosure: A review copy of this book was sent to me by the author. All of the above opinions are my own.

Not entirely sure why I am still reading this series. Well, yes, the audiobooks, narrated by Pearl Hewitt, who has a very soothing sort of voice, are good for going to sleep with.
Gemma, the owner of a Cotswold teashop, is a doormat. Most of her family and friends bully her in a gentle fashion, and she has an inflated view of her contribution to solving murders. However, if she stood up to her mother and to the quartet of elderly ladies who all amuse themselves by helping out at the teashop, there wouldn't be much plot left. No doubt I will carry on using the series for its soporific qualities! But I feel bound to add that I hate titles with bad puns.

Actually, I don't mean to sound quite so crabby - the series is quite sweet, and I am quite besotted enough with cats to like the feline heroine, Muesli, who playfully weaves her way through the books and charms most of the people who meet her. And that's part of the quality which characterizes this series - it's sheer Niceness. They depict a world of endless summer days where it never rains and any unpleasantness is always tidied away quickly. The worst that can happen is a proliferation of crocheted doilies in the tearoom. And it's very restful that they are written in resolutely British English (I believe there's a glossary for US readers who might need help over petticoat tails and cat crunch) - it makes a change when so many books published here in the UK now come complete with American spelling and terms.

another fun read in this series

Gemma, the owner of a tearoom located in a little village just outside of Oxford, England seems to have developed a a nose for finding bodies and solving murders, much to the dismay of her current beau, Detective Devlin O’Connor. In this book, the returning “golden boy chef” of Cassie’s college is murdered, and Gemma and the “Old Biddies” as Gemma refers to the the 4 elderly ladies from her village, are hot on the trail of the murder, or are they? Will Gemma manage to keep the elderly women out of trouble and safe, plus catch the killer before she becomes the next victim?

I really enjoyed finally being let in on Devlin’s secret, his displeasure with his mother and having Gemma meet her at last. I must say she wasn’t the most likeable character, but it was sweet to see Gemma trying to find a way to help both Devlin and his mother appreciate one another for who they are and move forward in their relationship. I can’t say I enjoy the shenanigans that Gemma’s mother puts her through, and frankly I wish she would grow a back bone and deal with it once and for all, but most of the characters are quirky and mainly likeable. Overall it’s another fun read in this series. Not exactly a fantastic mystery but the kind of book you come back to for the characters and the setting.

Every scene serves the story in several ways simultaneously, and it creates an immersive sense of seamless progression throughout the novel. You’re getting the gradual formation of character arcs and storylines while the primary plot is moving and the sub-plots are developing, ALL AT THE SAME TIME. The one drawback is the frequent use of recaps in the plot as a means of reviewing everything that has transpired, whenever a new lead arises. I suppose reiterating information is common for the mystery genre, and especially for one that is narrated in first-person, but it feels a bit excessive throughout this novel.

The author makes use of many historic landmarks and locales throughout the novel. The story takes place in Oxford (England), and aside from Gemma’s tearoom which basically serves as a reset location for the mc & reader to review certain plot points, the author takes advantage of the historically rich setting, by not only spreading the events of the novel across various locales, but doing so as an opportunity to feed the reader some fun-size factoids.
