Demonic Disasters and Afterlife Adventures #1

A Beginner’s Guide to Death, Demons, and Other Afterlife Disasters

Rate this book
Adam:
Adam is not having a good day. First, he finds out his very long time boyfriend has been having an affair. Then, his dramatic exit becomes a little too dramatic when he ends up dead. To top it off, he finds out that the afterlife isn’t at all what he expected (he has no desire to learn to play the harp, thank you very much). Fortunately for him, some afterlife bureaucratic screw up ends him up with the most smoking hot demon he’s ever seen, and he decides he’s keeping him. Maybe the afterlife won’t be so bad after all.

Minos:
As Judge of the Damned, Minos has seen all sorts of human depravity over his endless existence. When a beautiful, shining soul pops into his chamber for judgment, he knows it's a mistake. The human, however, seems quite content to hang around, and it isn’t long before Minos decides he just might decide to keep this one. Minos isn’t the optimistic or happy sort, but he can’t help but be caught up in the whirlwind that is Adam. When forces beyond his control want to return Adam to his designated afterlife, Minos decides that will not be happening, heaven and hell be damned.

Tags: A very grumpy demon meets his match in a snarky, sunshine-filled human; not all angels are nice; Limbo is the party place to be; the afterlife is run like a corporate office, complete with red tape, pointless memos, and high levels of frustration; Minos has a tail and knows how to use it.

MC asked about how a stranger’s genitals looked like the first time they met. and he was described as “unfiltered” MC, ofc 🙄 and was justified by a line: “never feel bad about saying what you’re thinking.” fucking disgusting.

”Do you even have a penis? Or a vagina? Or genitalia? Or both? Oh! Wouldn’t that be awesome—you could have both and be with a man or a woman! I’d love to have both, but I’m guessing I can’t just turn into a demon, even if I never go back to that other place again.”

“So? What do you have? I mean, penis? Vagina? Are you all smooth like a Ken doll down there? Because even if so, that tail still has so many possibilities.”

bare in mind this was on page 17 and 23.

gosh, i DESPISED Adam. he talks aLOT. non stop, for pages and pages only full of his dialogues. i can hear his voice in my head the whole time reading this book. it’s haunting. it was soooo much. not only he talked too much, but he mansplained everything, he thinks he’s so cool and nice and he wont shut the fuck up. he’s annoying and had zero fucking manners. what the fuck is wrong with him ?!?!?

“Oh my god, then! You totally hate my random rambling and word vomit, and I’m so sorry! I really thought you didn’t mind, and I don’t know what’s wrong with me, but I can’t seem to help myself,” stfu bro…. yes, i hate you.

no worries, the one star is not solemnly for Adam. i only play fair game.

anyway, back to the actual review: this book was insta lust, which didn’t help with Adam’s fucking annoying attitude. i don’t like insta lust especially with non-existent connection between the MCs. which exactly what happened in this book. the Demon claimed Adam at 26% and the whole time, Minos only talk like three times. and then they proceed to keep having sex till the end. how do they keep thinking about sex when they don’t even know each other?????? they had zero connection and idek why Adam was made to be with this Devil. it’s pointless.

i think this story had potential, i was hooked in the beginning until Adam started talking. and i can’t deny the hate i have for him. i wish this was called PWP erotica instead so i could’ve stay the fuck away.

Uhm, the world sounds fun, the characters too, but... So much s*x scenes... Like why? The story could be so much better without so many s*x scenes... Very insta-love too

Ever just decide to read a book based on the title and get sucked into it? I am so glad I clicked on the request button for this one. Fair warning, this is most likely not going to be liked by everyone. It has humor that is really overboard.

There will be slight spoilers, cause gosh, I cannot gush without spoiling something

So in here we have Adam. He had just found out his horrible boyfriend was cheating on him and ran out and got hit by a drunken driver.

“Buddy? Who the fuck calls the person they’re having an illicit affair with buddy? What the fuck? Is he a damn elf? A little?” Adam mumbled to himself. So, he had some… interesting tastes in reading. You had to get your kicks somewhere when your sex life was practically nonexistent.

He then shows up in the afterlife to be sorted but things do not go well and he ends up in front of the Demon Lord who judges everyone. Instant attraction happens and Adam decides to keep this Demon, who is Minos, which starts off the story.

The introduction of Adam to the Minos was awesome. Minos, you see, was stuck in a rut and didn't know how to get out of it.

I mean, after that, did Minos really have a choice to let this human go?

Now the overall story in this one was about the Leadership Team that is made up of beings from Yah and Luce's realms. But yall, this is run like a freaking corporation with the leadership team being the C suite users and Yah and Luce are the CEO's and president of the board, respectively. Now I personally work in the corp world and this part really made me laugh. Cause its mostly true. I am a lowly being in a world where only the C suite matters and omg, I hate having to do tickets. I am judged very much so on whether my tickets are updated and/or closed in a timely matter. While Angel-uh was not a good being, I understand the not being able to resolve a ticket due to not have the resources needed to do so. At the end, no one looked at the updates in the ticket itself, which caused all the issues.

Minos and Adam find out that Adam is Minos' Soul and I took that as they are fated mates. They will never be parted.

I am happy that the other lords of the demon world will be getting their HEA. I cannot wait to read the next one.

Now onto my nitpicks.

This needed to be edited. I don't mean that words were misspelled or anything like that, but paragraphs did not always flow easy. Like Adam or Minos would be doing or saying something in one paragraph and then something would happen in the next one that made no sense. This read more like a free flow, whatever came next, without any planning, type of story. I did not mind it that much, hence my rating, but it will be something that will be noticed.

A sweet and quick read!

Cute, fluffy, snarky—too much so.
I enjoyed it, however.
Insta-love.
Non-stop chatter.
Good sex scenes. (But, alas, no orgy in hell).

I was looking forward to this book since I first read the blurb a month or so ago.

First up, I love crazy books. OTT is often my go to for comedy.

But this one was just a bit too much. It tried too hard to be funny but just didn't quite hit the mark.

It certainly had its moments, and it started out strong. For me, at least, I think it was the lack of any real story. All the witty dialogue sort of just went nowhere. Adam ended up in limbo/hell, found a gorgeous demon who he immediately felt a deep connection to, and didn't want to leave. The End.

Apart from a LOT of sex (I love a well written sex scene or 10, but there was just too much heat and not enough story), and a short kidnapping where he's taken back to his 'rightful' place in heaven, that's it.

And it was a shame, because the potential was there. The characters are crazy as, but the kind of characters that you want to see what they get up to next.

The author has skill. I liked her writing style, and they have great comedic timing. The story just needed a good developmental editor to give it some depth.

An author to watch, but this one was a miss.

The good
+ Adam claiming Minos
+ Minos claiming Adam right back
+ Adam deciding to be mad at Pandora just in case Minos was
+ Adam adapting to life in hell easily
+ Minos carrying Adam, and Adam sitting in Minos' lap all the time

The neutral
o Adam got his heart broken by Tim, and was over it within one day of being dead
o I assume the explanation will come in a future book, but I really would have appreciated some explanation about what meant

The bad
- A lot of Adam's comments didn't work for me.
    • "Do you even have a penis? Or a vagina? Or genitalia? Or both? Oh! Wouldn't that be awesome – you could have both and be with a man or a woman!" - What could it possibly matter what kind of genitalia Minos had when it comes to who he could have sex with?
    • "My ex wasn't really into penetrative sex. Hew as SO BORING. No giving or receiving from that asshole. I think he found it all rather messy and distasteful. Like, hello, shouldn't sex be messy? That's half the fun." - I know Tim was a dick, but that's no reason to shame anyone's sexual preferences. It's completely valid to not be into penetrative sex, and it doesn't make you 'boring' or whatever. Nobody deserves to be shamed for what they like and don't like sexually
    • "Ok, so what is under that robe? Because you are smoking hot, and I'm sure it's like way inappropriate to ask, but also maybe polite? Because I'd like to use the correct gender pronouns when talking to you." - He could just ask the preferred pronouns without sexually harrassing someone. It's not 'polite' to ask a stranger what's under their robe. Also, it's completely irrelevant, because whatever is under their robe does not determine their gender and/or pronouns
- There were lots of pop culture references in this book

Quotes
x Minos didn't know it yet, but he had just gotten himself a human.
x "I think I'm speechless. I'm never speechless. I always have words for all the things." Minos chuckled, because even speechless, Adam still couldn't stop talking.

This was alright, and I enjoyed a lot of it. However, the pop culture references and some of Adam's more insensitive comments didn't work for me. I am also not really enticed by the sneak peek into the next book, and probably won't be reading it. Would recommend for the cuddles, carrying and lap sitting, but not much else.

“Ravish me like I’m a 19th century virginal governess in a Harlequin romance novel.”

So I’ve seen this series around and I’ve branched out into paranormal and thought I’d give this one a try. It was a cute, fluffy romance with a super snarky human and a grumpy demon. I enjoyed it but not sure I will continue with the series.

One of my favourite things in the book was how Adam the human got involved in the punishments of those who were judged had to serve. He had such amazing ideas and I feel like if the book had centered more around that I would have loved it! Adam was a bit too much at times but he was definitely the sunshine in this pairing.

Minos was as a grumpy demon and he was great. I thought it was super cool that he could change his body size and genitals on a whim!

If you are interested in demon stories that are easy, fated mate pretty much and have a super chatty human then I’d still recommend!

I enjoyed Shannon Mae's A Beginner’s Guide to Death, Demons, and Other Afterlife Disasters. It's a bit silly, and quite funny, but mostly I'd say it's creative. I love paranormal stories about the afterlife, and I Mae's take on it all.

Plus, the romance between Adam and Minos is truly unique and very insteresting... not to mention pretty darn kinky lol. Let's just say Minos' use of his tail is inpired.

Mighty fine!

Minos might've liked the rambling, but I didn't. I liked Adam, but the rambling got annoying fast. I did like how at ease and decisive Adam was. The characters down below were entertaining and I'm looking forward to more matchups. The characters upstairs all had sticks. I was kinda expecting a judging for the cheat somewhere in there. It was nice and fun, but yeah, rambling.

I honestly loved Adams rambles which was surprising to even me bc I hate unnecessary dialogue but it worked perfectly for him, i didn’t get hit with the “omg stfu already” feel so love that.

Minos was such a grump loved it, so adorable with his sunshine Adam tho. They just balanced each other so well, loved when he went full transformation find my Adam mode, super hot.

I liked they were so codependent with each other I always find that cute in books, plus they just automatically agreed that they were keeping each other no matter what

Steam-2ish/3 expect tail action

This was amazing!

I honestly can’t believe this is this author’s debut book. It comes across as a book by an established author with none of the expected (and completely understandable) niggles from someone new to publishing (sometimes awkward phrasing, pacing etc). It does kind of remind me Jennifer Cody or AJ Sherwood’s style of fun (ie characters who might be a tad crazy but are awesome because of that) but has its own distinct voice to it. I love, love, love the idea of Yah and Lucy having created management who then becomes the bureaucrats from hell (hehe no pun intended). The way Hell, Heaven and Limbo were set out is both endlessly fascinating as a concept but also ripe for more shenanigans which I am very much looking forward to. Adam and Minos were hilariously sweet together and I loved that Adams got to be his best self in his afterlife after he had a bit of a rough go of it. The secondary characters are great. I can’t wait to see more of them and I am incredibly excited for Az’s book (though I may already be in love with Ari a little haha). There’s also a certain couple I am realllly hoping we get to see have a HEA because they’re already adorable and they aren’t even together yet. This is definitely an auto buy author for me already! So if you like cracky fun with some snark then this is definitely the book for you!

POV: 3rd, Dual
SPICE: 🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️
ANGST: very low

Hilarious. Y’all, oh my gosh, I cackled so friggin much throughout 90% of the book. Adam was a nut. At times it got exhausting, but that just made me love Minos even more because he ADORED his little human.

“𝙔𝙤𝙪𝙧 𝙩𝙝𝙤𝙪𝙜𝙝𝙩𝙨 𝙖𝙧𝙚 𝙖 𝙘𝙖𝙣𝙙𝙡𝙚 𝙞𝙣 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙙𝙖𝙧𝙠𝙣𝙚𝙨𝙨, 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙄 𝙬𝙤𝙪𝙡𝙙𝙣’𝙩 𝙚𝙭𝙩𝙞𝙣𝙜𝙪𝙞𝙨𝙝 𝙩𝙝𝙚𝙢 𝙛𝙤𝙧 𝙖𝙡𝙡 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙬𝙤𝙧𝙡𝙙.”

Just imagine: a demon judge of the damned and a human sent down below because of a stressed out angel. These two were IT. There was so many layers to their bond. It was lustful and obsessive and sweet and protective. It was insta and it worked so well because Adam was unapologetically hilarious and Minos was smitten asf.

There’s some tail action *wink wink* that worked out nicely. Totally wasn’t prepared but thank you for those scenes Shannon!

“𝙍𝙖𝙫𝙞𝙨𝙝 𝙢𝙚 𝙡𝙞𝙠𝙚 𝙄’𝙢 𝙖 19𝙩𝙝 𝙘𝙚𝙣𝙩𝙪𝙧𝙮 𝙫𝙞𝙧𝙜𝙞𝙣𝙖𝙡 𝙜𝙤𝙫𝙚𝙧𝙣𝙚𝙨𝙨 𝙞𝙣 𝙖 𝙃𝙖𝙧𝙡𝙚𝙦𝙪𝙞𝙣 𝙧𝙤𝙢𝙖𝙣𝙘𝙚 𝙣𝙤𝙫𝙚𝙡. 𝙄 𝙖𝙢 𝙨𝙤 𝙧𝙚𝙖𝙙𝙮 𝙛𝙤𝙧 𝙞𝙩.”

The vibe of the story is plot smut smut smut plot plot plot smut plot smut epilogue. And it was AMAZING. I’m gonna read every book in this series as they come out.

I can tell most people are going to love this one, but it absolutely did not work for me. The first like 25% I thought it was funny but then it just went down hill. I think it all comes down to how much you like Adam, and for me his constant rambling and lack of boundaries was not cute and quirky, nor was it fun banter (Minos doesn't even talk for most of the book, it cannot be banter), it was just annoying.

This was a fun read, which I really appreciated. I liked how Minos and Adam worked together ...although the reason for that could have been better explained.
The world building was fun and there is a lot of potential for future fun books.
I really want to read Luces book ... hopefully that one is a bit longer.

So if you are looking for fun and sex together in a short package, this is your book

DNF 25%

Bottom line: Talky MC needs to shut up once in a while, because it's not cute or interesting. At all.

I tried to give the book extra time to become something interesting because it's a debut novel, but it's just way too much info dumping and rambling dialogue. I started skimming at 20% and gave up at 25% because, even though I just woke up from a four hour nap, the book was putting me back to sleep. This style of writing is not my thing.

Adam planted his flag

Adam just found out his partner of nearly a decade has been cheating on him. Ready to throw him out, he decides to leave and let the jerk pack. As he was obviously distraught, this wasn't the best decision. As was evidenced by his appearance in an angel's office. After hearing about harp lessons or a gardening club he decides heaven does not sound like his idea of a fun afterlife. He then appears in Purgatory in front of a very large burgundy demon. He decides this is much more to his taste, claims his lap as his throne and makes himself comfy. This demon just aquired a human. No, the demon doesn't get a vote.

Spoilers ahead.
So very campy and cliche but in a fun way, not in a horrible way. I can't say I enjoy blurted L words (especially the first time they're uttered) during s*x. And daddy kink isn't my thing. It was an odd leap, they hadn't made any previous motions towards that until bam, a sudden brief scene almost at the end. But to each their own. Adam has zero filter before landing in the presence of a being that removes any filter a person might have had. It basically just turbo charges his verbal vomit. Which was hilarious and absurd at times. He did make a very sudden change of heart but it's explained away as a side effect of death. The dead don't grieve themselves. The memories of their lives are softened and distanced to help them adjust. Hence why Adam just crawled into Minos' lap. It was an entertaining read and leads into the next. I love authors who are big on consent, can have fun with their characters, and employ vast amounts of snark. Some resolutions were just poofed into being a little too conveniently, but it was a fun fluffy read.

Wow, what a fantastic read. I couldn't put it down. This is the first book in a new series and follows the human, Adam, and Demon, Minos. The characters are really well-written and Adam was charming, they make a lovely couple. The side characters are all interesting and add to the overall enjoyment of the story. The book is sweet, funny, and has all the feels. Tails add steam to any book :) I can't wait for the next book in the series. I received a free copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review.

Adam dies and is assigned to go to Heaven but that's too boring for him. He finds himself standing before the Judge of the Damned, Minos, who's really hot! Adam and Minos begin a campaign to stay together involving Lucifer and God. This book is filled with smutty scenes (a tail features prominently), humor, a grumpy Demon and a sunshiny human with a runaway mouth and no filter. Its pretty entertaining and a novel concept for a gay romance. 4.5 Stars. I received a copy of this book from Gay Romance reviews and this is my honest opinion.

3.5 ✨

Such an entertaining read! The setting is interesting and I adored Adam so much, his just so adorable and fun. His little comments, thoughts and just all of the softness with Mino's carrying him around and passing judgements together.

I really enjoyed their relationship, the chemistry is perfect and all of the balance between them - sunshine & grumpy is always wonderful and these two show that so well. All of the soft and steamy between them is lovely, the heated scenes were great as explore their relationship and introduce each other to new things.

The various cast introduced through were fascinating too, from Lucifer and God to more gods in the underworld which I'm excited to see more of in their own stories. I love the glimpses into the different job roles too and what they rule over, how their powers are influenced by it - such as Minos making people want to reveal things, Az and lust. Also enjoyed Pandora and the occasional demons were great.

Overall it's an incredible, fast paced and enchanting read making me smile constantly. With a lovely happy ending for Minos & Adam 🔥

(ENG) This is a lovely, short story that offers a whole new and fun vision of the afterlife. I enjoyed the bureaucratic aspects and the dynamic between God and Lucifer.
I really liked the grumpy Minos character, but I thought Adam was a bit much for me. I understand the lack of filter, but it seemed a bit forced at times.
They make a perfect, complementary couple, and I was so entertained reading their story.

Had I been in a different mood this may not have resonated quite as well but I really enjoyed this insta-love romance between a human who has recently died and a bored torture demon.

This book has dissapointed me. I don't know, I think I was not in the right mental space because normally I read these things and have a good time, but I was so bored and zero invested, i don't know. I think I'm kinda in a reading block.

Maybe I Will continue the series since Yah and Luce have interested me. But I Will need more Lore and explanation, because If Yah is god, doesn't that make them Luce's (Lucifer) parent???
