**SPOILER-FREE REVIEW**

To preface: I started this book on a Monday, thinking I'd enjoy it throughout the week as a bit of light reading. I FINISHED IT IN A SINGLE AFTERNOON/NIGHT.

LC Watson drowns her readers in Lake, our anxiety-ridden, relatable teenager in the most wonderful, fantasy-filled way that leaves us holding our breath for more. This book is a testament to the writer's love for fantasy and YA through mysterious circumstances, squeal-worthy quotes, and a cast of characters that feel like a puzzle well fit together. The plot develops well through the book, without lull and with layers added that feel genuine to the piece without leaving holes or frustrations.

My personal favorite, non-spoiler, part of the book is the way the characters read as actual teenagers, without feeling like other audiences/age groups are left out. Watson makes it easy to return to the days of (or relate to current days of) being scared of change, interpreting emotions, and daring to be brave. It's lovely to feel like, as an adult, I'm still going through Lake's experiences with her, without fear of being too disconnected from them.

If you are someone who enjoys being thrust into magic, exploring secrets, and/or gossiping with your best friends, then this is a novel you will truly sink your teeth into.

Overall, I'm so happy to have found this author through a retweet on Twitter (of all things??), and cannot wait to return to their works over and over again - especially for book two! Thanks for a new favorite read!

Let this be known - this was my first fantasy book and I solely picked this up because one of my favorite twitch streamers wrote this book. (s/o @Lexicat on Twitch).

That being said, y'all know that I am NOT a fantasy reader by any means, I've dabbled in YA but not both at all, AND ROMANCE?! FORGET IT.

BUT BRO - this. book. I have no words to explain how INVESTED I was in this book. The storyline, the plot, the characters, the PLOT TWISTS?! - MWAH *chefs kiss*

If you are like me and don't generally read fantasy, this was definitely an "easy" fantasy read IMO. It didn't feel like too much happening at once or too much world-building that sometimes can feel overwhelming. This was the perfect amount of everything you need in a book.

Can we just talk about the A++ lineup of characters we were graced with in this book? Which was my favorite? PUHLEASE don't make me choose (ok Quincy and his glow-up, I can't lie).

This was an amazing story about friendship, family, loss, grief, and sprinkle in a little bit of magic and mystery.

Lastly, can we just talk about that ending?! In true Lexicat fashion, ARE YOU SHITTING MY DICK?!

Not bad for a human in a supernatural school story. There's some more sci-fi ish elements that isn't really my cup of tea, and the pacing of the last 100 pages so felt off, like more dramatic when I was looking for the action. Get why it ended the way it did, but it still frustrated me.

Since I’m still in my fantasy groove this year and it got picked as the July book for a book club, I picked up this one!

Magic, magical creatures, a magical school? I’m in! Just enough romance to make it feel like an actual YA novel? Unheard of, I’m ready! A fantasy novel main character that isn’t annoying af? Say no more.

This was definitely YA. It was easy to read and digest. The world building wasn’t bananas and only touched upon slightly, but in a way that we knew where it was going. Which makes sense for the first book in a series - I’m hoping we’ll get more of the other world in the next book! I loved the subtle, and not so subtle, explanations of the extent of each magical creatures abilities sprinkled throughout.

The plot was really good, the characters were lovable (except for the ones that weren’t….), and the last page of the book was just heartbreaking. Which really is the only way I want a book to end, to be honest.

I can’t wait to see where this story ends up going!!

HELLO??!??

Book 2 can not come fast enough. I NEED more.

It was a slower start than I am used to with books I enjoy, but LC Watson really takes the time and care to really entrench you into the world of Lake Watson.
Once things picked up, I couldn’t put it down.

It’s like Twilight, All Our Hidden Gifts, and Umbrella Academy had a beautiful wonderful baby

This is overall a really good tale. Easy to follow and likable enough to finish in a day. I could (and might) make a list of all the things I want to know that didn’t get answered lol! Anyways, it is however YA and I’ve PERSONALLY moved on from that but I fancy the author and really needed to read it for myself. I hope we get a book 2!

This book is absolutely amazing and I NEED book 2 like now. This book had me screaming into a pillow after being so drawn into the book and staying up all night to finish it. The beginning is a little slow however, by chapter 7 it felt impossible to put the book down as I had to know what was going to happen next. Reading this book I would start to think I knew what was going to happen and then i was thrown for a loop and kept guessing until the end making me just want to read more. With bring thrown for a loop and never knowing what was going to happen getting to the last few chapters my jaw dropped to the floor and was continuously in shock of the turn of events. This is definitely a MUST read for anyone.

Overall rating: 4.5✩ (rounded up to 5)

L.C. Watson’s debut novel, A Tale of Fragile Fate, is extremely impressive to put things lightly. Following the first person perspective of Lake Watson, accompanied by her brother Daniel, as readers, we learn how the world unfolds as Lake does, and there is a lot of unraveling to be done.

The story starts slow; while as readers we are thrusted into a new environment as Lake is, the plot moves slowly, allowing us as readers to familiarize ourselves with the world they are in, and this is done wonderfully through Watson’s craft. She works very meticulously to keep the speed and movement of the plot steady, which some might dislike, however I found it as a positive, allowing me to digest the information we are given. As the story progresses, the plot seems to speed, creating an ebb and flow effect that still works extremely well when looking at the pacing of the plot.

In this book, it seems that every character has a place; every action, in turn, has meaning. L.C. Watson leaves no stones unturned, yet also leaves us as readers racing for more answers to questions that bubble as the story continues.

While reading, one criticism I have was that – and I’ll leave out names to keep this spoiler-friendly – Lake’s romantic relationship moved a bit faster than I would have liked. However, the reasoning for this fits within this fantastical universe, which made it a bit easier for me to digest personally.

If you’re considering this book, get it. With witty characters, moments of wisdom, and a real and deep portrayal of trauma and anxiety, this book shows the joys of living, friendship, and also the reality of life and the intensity of emotions. I think the aspects of realism with Lake’s emotions and traumas blended with moments of joy and happiness make for a very real character, and makes the story itself all that more enjoyable and even more raw. While this book is a long one, I – a notoriously slow reader – managed to finish it in less than 2 weeks. I couldn’t put it down, and while there is a lot of worldbuilding to digest which might slow many down, it was done in a way that was not overwhelming or confusing. I think this book can be enjoyed by people of all ages, as well as younger people. As an adult, seeing real depictions of panic attacks that aren’t romanticized was very welcome, and while children might not understand it, I found it to be a groundbreaker in literature seeing the raw portrayal of emotions done so well. As a note though, for younger kids, there are cuss-words in the book, so there’s that.

All this being said, while of course no book is perfect, this book was a great read that I didn’t want to end. It provided a new world that was easy to digest, likeable and realistic – even in the world of magical realism – characters (I think Joel is my favorite!), and an enrapturing plot that kept me wanting to read and wanting to know even more.

This story had me in its grasp from start to finish. I found this to be a highly impressive and gripping debut novel, and overall, an absolute wild ride.

I was absolutely enthralled with the world that Watson has created. The school for supernatural students was adorable. I loved that it combined all my favorite supernaturals (fae, wizards, vampires, werewolves), their teenage high school drama, and the truly life threatening situations they find themselves in. This novel being set at a school seems symbolic for readers to become acquainted with this rich world filled with fantastic places lurking just out of sight. Readers get hints about other realms, and I hope the sequel will explore those more.

I liked that Daniel was essentially the chosen one, and Lake could just go off and have her little boyfriend while Daniel delt with the evil plot in the background. That is, of course, until Lake decided she wanted to be the main character in this story. Good for her! She said it herself, she always considered herself a side character. Watching our main girl go through serious growth throughout this novel is inspiring. Lake's struggles with anxiety and fitting in resonate deeply with me, and I liked to see her overcome these with the help of her friends. And though she's able to find ways to deal with those struggles, they're not problems that just go away, and she has to work at them little by little.

I wish there were more uses of everyday magic in this book. For a school filled with magical beings, we barely saw any of it outside the life or death situations. Even then, solutions boiled down to beating a guy with a bat or magically whacking someone with a tree. (Both of which I highly enjoyed). I need to see Piper's wings and Joel become a werewolf in the next book. I hope the sequel will dive deeper into the personal lives of all of Lake's friends. I desperately need to know the details of both Quinn's and Piper's relationship drama.

The atmosphere was moody, dark, mysterious, and romantic. Overall I really enjoyed reading this and can't wait to read more from the author. I'd recommend this book to anyone who likes a cozy supernatural coming of age novel, or to anyone who ever considered themselves a Twihard.

For full disclosure: I read this book first during the latter part of the drafting process as a beta reader, and then for the second time with an Advanced Reader Copy (ARC) of the final printed book in eBook form. Despite this, I can say that my opinions in this review are one-hundred percent my own.

It's a popular formula: a book about Werewolves and Vampires (and other fantastical characters *wink* ). Yet where most indulge in the tropes that all these different fantasy creatures hate each other and are constantly at one another's throats, L.C. Watson deviates, creating a tight-knit social group of main and support characters that successfully embody the spirit of camaraderie. Expertly weaving each relationship within the friend group, while your focus is on the main character, you do not feel as though the support characters are one-dimensional: each character could be the main character if the situation arose. At times, you feel like you are a fly on the many walls of the Astryn Penn Academy. Despite the fantastical nature of this book, the relationships within it could very much be real.

With such a strong foundation to each relationship, romantic, platonic or...otherwise, it makes sense that this book is a romance book with fantasy elements, as opposed to the other way around. L.C. Watson employs fantasy elements, and does so brilliantly, understanding how each one functions -- both in general, but also within the fantasy of her own story. Yet these are just the set-dressing, the fairy lights over the greenhouse if you will. The true driving force of the novel is the romance...and I mean that literally. Now I am not a romance reader by any means -- I was invested in this book at first for the fantasy -- but Watson's writing made it easy to be engrossed. Watson adds comedy to scenes, I think, without realising it, but I found myself smiling at various moments -- romantic or otherwise -- and laughing too.

Yet laughter is only one side of life, and I think what grounds L.C. Watson's writing more than her care with character relationships is that she knows this all too well. This is not a happy-go-lucky book where everything is idealised and perfect, as one would know from reading the blurb. Watson navigates these darker themes as she does with other things in this book -- that is, treated with an air of relatability, allowing them to be accessible to the reader, while carefully avoiding trivialising what she writes about. At no point, did her writing feel condescending or judgemental, nor did the inclusion of these themes feel out of place.

Overall an exciting read was had. I often struggle to focus on reading in general, but L.C. Watson's first foray into the YA-romance space was easy to read, focus, and enjoy without feeling lacking in any areas. I look forward to where L.C. Watson's writing takes her next!

Overall rating 4.5 stars (rounded up to 5). As a debut novel, this book is quite impressive. Sometimes first-time authors struggle to find their writing style/voice, but that is not the case for L.C. Watson. This book felt cohesive and well-thought out, keeping the reader intrigued and turning the pages devouring the book. The story follows teenager Lake Watson as her and her little brother Daniel have their world completely uprooted and turned on its head when their father abandons them at a fancy boarding school for 'gifted' students.
The story starts off slow but soon picks up speed, racing faster and faster until the explosive finale scene! Staying away from spoilers - I just want to say that Watson created an intriguing world (Astryn Penn Academy) and a wealth of likeable characters. I wish I was part of Lake's friendship group because they all seem so lovely and fun!
Reid has got to be my favourite character (what can I say, I've got a thing for guys like him ;D ) but there is a special place in my heart for Piper because she seems like the best gal pal you could ask for!
As mentioned before, L.C. Watson keeps the reader wanting to know more as the plot develops and it's almost like a rollercoaster - a slow steady start that is building up and up and then it tips over the edge racing towards the end with all it's adrenaline and glory.
No book is perfect, so allow me a tiny bit of criticism. I found Lake quite naive at some parts - I legit wanted to grab her by the shoulders and shake some sense into her! However, I'm not sure I can classify this as a legitimate piece of criticism because Watson herself addresses it. Other characters in the story point out how naive and clueless Lake can be at points - and to be honest, what seventeen year old girl isn't a bit naive. It just bothered me at parts so I had to say something! Also I feel like there could have been more romance. A few kisses here and there are sweet, but I was hoping for something a bit more...or maybe I'm just reading too many other spicy 18+ books ;D But yeah, personally, I would have liked a bit more spice - but I understand that the YA genre spans an age range that may be wanting something a bit more innocent.
I cannot wait to see what else Watson has up her sleeve (book 2 perhaps, WHEN?!) - but I know we will be in for another treat. Overall, a spellbinding and impressive debut - filled with lovable characters and an enthralling storyline. Pick up this book, you won't be disappointed!

This review contains spoilers.

A Tale of Fragile Fate, for me, was an okay book. The story is good, but some of the elements in the story take away from the book.

The story is interesting but gets lost in the romance and the time skips make it challenging to have a feel for the story. I wanted to see more connections with Lake's dad and see their relationship but we don't really get to see it which ruined the emotions of when he died. It also didn't help when we started to see that her dad wasn't responding to texts and him just abandoning them. We didn't know his character and why that was unusual, we were just told it was. The same goes for everyone in Lake's family her mom and brother. I don't get to see their relationships outside of the school setting, which really makes the characters feel dull.

I also don't really feel like I truly got to know Lake as a character, and that most of the time she just told us these things about her.

When it comes to characters, the side characters like Reid, Pipper, and Quincy feel fleshed out. They all felt like real people and not walking stereotypes. I enjoyed Mallory and Connor as characters, but at times it felt like they were not as fleshed out as the main cast.

The main downfall, in my opinion, was the juggling of the fantasy/adventure and romance plots. L.C Watson tells a great story, but at times I forgot what was going on since we sometimes jumped from plot to plot. I would forget we were in a fantasy story and then be reminded when Piper was doing her mind reading or something. The fantasy aspect felt almost second nature at times and I wish we would have explored the world a bit more. I wanted to see more besides fight scenes.

The only other thing I did not like was the ending. It felt like a cliffhanger and incomplete.

Overall, Watson has a way with words. They are an amazing writer who has amazing ideas for stories. They are able to write beautifully and you can really tell that each character is their own. Lake's voice is nice and she doesn't come off weird. I loved how things moved smoothly in the writing. This is a great first book for a writer!

My rating of two stars doesn't mean this isn't a good book and you shouldn't give the book a read. On the contrary, it just means that it might not have been the book for me. This is a great first book for a writer, and Watson can only grow as a writer. I am excited to see what they come out with next.

For context, I was an ARC reader for the book.

Fans of magical boarding schools and baseball-playing vampires, unite!

From the very start, A Tale of Fragile Fate had me hooked. The abrupt beginning provides an allure for the early chapters, keeping me turning pages as I found myself empathizing with Lake’s anxiety and home life. It’s portrayed incredibly well, touching on a prominent issue in everyday life for many people, as well as establishing a strained family dynamic that still manages to exude love, too.

As her friendships grow and develop, it’s easy to find their bonds strong even as Lake herself may doubt them. I root for Lake and her friends - especially Quincy ;) And I thoroughly enjoy the mischievous, soft-for-you bat boy that is Reid Beckett. Watching Lake’s relationship with him bloom is captivating and invigorating, giving the girl who’s got so much on her shoulders a reason to bear it all.

As the story progressed, I couldn’t seem to put this book down. Many nods to pop culture, obscure or otherwise, including a favorite video game objective (doing gens, you?) had me smiling with the delight of recognizing something you love. And as the story grew to a climax, I found myself anxious too - but also determined that our heroes would prevail.

Several moments towards the end had a lump in my throat, including all of the chapters in Reid’s POV. Devastation and grief, and disbelief when Lake enters the rift. Somehow, all of the emotions - good and bad - enter a high note and harmonize. Several plot lines are completed - some even vindicated (1%!) and left me with a sense of satisfaction, even if it was laced with dread.

The ending leaves you with bated breath, but not without providing a sense of completion to the story as a whole. Even though it ends almost as abruptly as it began, A Tale of Fragile Fate is victorious in its storytelling, world-building, and character development, with many moments of warmth and camaraderie making me feel all fuzzy inside.

I’m on the edge of my seat writing this review, tempted to dive back in and figure out which Lake + Reid scene is my favorite, because come ON, y’all. I can’t get enough.

Thank you so much to L.C. Watson for the opportunity and honor to read your first published work! I look forward to seeing what other marvelous adventures you have in store for Lake and her friends, and I can’t wait for my physical copy of ATOFF to make it home to my shelf ♥️

For starters, I have a difficult time reading books set in first person. That being said, this book is written so well that I hardly noticed it beyond the first few pages. L.C. Watson has a way with words, and the entire book was just a wonderful roller coaster of emotions for me. From genuinely laughing at things the main character thought, to finishing the book in tears, I was constantly wishing I had someone to talk to about this book. If you love magic and vampires and paranormal things in general, this book is perfect for you! It's YA, but I didn't feel cheesy reading it despite being outside of the YA demographic.
The characters are likable and have a dynamic that feels authentic, their relationships to one another feel well rounded and exist outside the confines of this particular story. The romance arc features a protective dynamic, but the characters are not stifling or controlling of one another. Lake is a relatable protagonist, not once was I pulled out of the narrative thinking that her actions were unbelievable for her character, nor was I constantly frustrated by choices she made, as I tend to be with younger characters. Following along with her character growth felt rewarding as a reader, and I'm excited for others to experience it as well.
The plot of the story kept me on my toes the entire time, with everything coming together in the end very nicely, often tied in throughout the book with clever use of callbacks. The one thing I wish we had more of was Lake interacting with characters outside of Piper and Reid - I would love to spend more time getting to know the other members of her friend group in the future.
If you want something to read that involves found family, a bit of mystery, and a blooming romance, you're in the right place. At nearly 500 pages, this book was hard to put down, and worth every second I spent on it. I highly recommend you get this book, and in the meantime, I'll be counting down the days until Lake and Reid's story continues!

Boy oh boy is there a lot to unpack here. I’m going to *try* to keep this 99% spoiler friendly.
TL;DR This is a great book overall and a wonderful read. I really enjoyed the story and the characters, there was a lot of depth and growth. But it has its flaws. If you enjoy romance novels, with a background of magical creatures (vampires, werewolves, fairies) then this book is definitely for you!

Long version (with small plot talk): My biggest flaw with this novel? There was A LOT to unpack. There was a ton happening in the beginning. The novel really drove hard in the magical creature and culture aspect in the beginning, with magic, lore and background. Then it got lost by the overall romance arc that was happening and I lost the main plot of the story until about the last quarter of the book. That’s when everything just seemed to wrap up and end. There were main story bits here and there but I really feel lost at times (maybe just as lost as the main character was). This book contains a lot of small details that you have to pay super close attention to in order to follow along. It’ll definitely be a novel that I will have to read again to really capture the whole story and the small details I missed throughout. It’s told in first person, so you’re learning the plot along with the main character and learning things through her eyes. Overall, I did really enjoy the story and I felt a deep connection to the characters and their stories as they went through this journey of discovering themselves and the hardship they were put into. I’m definitely going to read again and I can’t wait for the second one!

I received a copy of the book in exchange for a review!

However, I will be looking forward to purchasing this book because I honestly could not put it down, and I need it on my bookshelf. In Watson's debut novel, we are plunged straight into the story of Lake Watson and her brother Daniel, packing up the house and leaving Georgia with their dad. From the first few chapters, can tell how meticulous she is with her writing. The immense world building, how each character is unique and fully fleshed out is a clear sign of L.C.’s dedication to her craft.

When I wasn’t reading the book, I was thinking about the book. What is Lake’s power? What is Daniel’s? What is the locket for?

“Life doesn’t always need an explanation, Lake. Fate takes us where we need to be sometimes.”

Watson was able to tell multiple plots and subplots with ease and create intricate layers that enticed you to continue reading because the feeling of not knowing was unbearable!

“She told me that anyone that messes with destiny would probably cause a rift in the universe.”

I could go on about the world and character building, the ability to create a place that feels plausible, and hash out personalities that are dimensional.

Leaving the best for last, my precious Reid Beckett, traumatized and determined. The way Watson writes her characters, from Mallory to Reid to Piper, they all have such distinct personalities that are told through more than dialogue. The characters are so easy to love and hate.

“Everything I learn about him makes me want to know more, every minute we spend together leaves me needing another.” Same Lake, same.

No spoilers here!

I picked up this book because one of my favorite Twitch streamers wrote it, I wouldn’t normally go for fantasy books and usually I’d stay far from anything dealing with human/vampire romance. (Sorry Twilight.) I was shocked to discover I was actually enjoying this book and I couldn’t put it down. For this having been her first book, Watson does a spectacular job at world building and setting us up for a series that is sure to be easy to fall in love with. The only wish I have for it is to go even further into the fantasy aspect of the story. I felt that it was a little bit lacking in some places and at times I forgot it was supposed to be a fantasy novel until someone did magic or Lake, our main character and the narrator of the novel, called her friend a werewolf. I also thought that the romance between Lake and [redacted] was well plotted out but it got to be too much at times, as I felt it was over exerted in the text with a lot of fluff. By this I mean I thought the author added too much of our characters’ inner thoughts about how much they love each other and want to protect each other. It got a bit repetitive.

All in all, I found myself unable to stop thinking about the characters and how their stories will continue after I was finished with the book. (Quincy better have a bigger feature in the second book!) They’re like some kind of goo stuck in my brain that I can’t remove, even by forcing new characters from an entirely different book in there. I’m definitely excited for book #2! This gets a “highly recommend” from me for anyone who is into romance, vampires, magic, adventure, and relatable main characters.

Following the death of their mother, Lake, her brother, Daniel and their father are inseparable. Sure they move around from school to school a lot for their father’s job, but they at least have each other. That is until they are dropped off at a train station with no explanation other than a one-way ticket to a boarding school that their mother said that they needed to be at and a locket that doesn’t open.

Being a boarding school isn’t the only thing special about Astryn Penn. It’s also a school for the supernatural and their family. There are fairies and witches and werewolves and vampires mixed in with mortals. The headmaster takes a special interest in Daniel and seems very interested in the locket around Lake’s neck. Lake soon learns that her mother was keeping a lot of secrets when she passed away and the answer to some of the secrets might lay in the mysterious Reid Beckett.

I love magical schools and I especially love when not everyone is magical at the magical school. I enjoyed that everyone thought Lake was in on the joke, but was secretly completely shocked when she found out that her closest friends were witches and werewolves. It was also really hilarious that Lake swore that they didn’t belong at Astryn Penn because Daniel was just normal little brother weird and not magical weird.

I really appreciate that the supernatural fated relationship actually has a normal age gap for once, and isn’t an 100 year old immortal creature with a 17-year-old. I also really appreciate that the fantasy romance isn’t full of spice which you still sometimes see in YA books. There was just the right amount of mystery and connection between Lake and Reid to make the relationship intriguing and the book left off on a cliffhanger that I can’t wait to see what happens!

This book is L.C. Watson’s debut book and I’m so impressed! I can’t wait to see what happens next with this series. Thank you so much for letting read this ARC!

This book is a must-read! I found it hard to put down. I'm avoiding spoilers in this review so I'll try to mention what I liked about it without giving too much detail. The world and characters are vividly described and it’s easy to visualize the world around the main character. The main character is relatable and easy to like an empathize with. All of the characters felt very real and the author has done a wonderful job of creating endearing characters you really care about (and also some you really don’t like!). The mystery that slowly unravels is very compelling and keeps you engrossed throughout the full story. I enjoyed the pace of the book, and seeing the friendships between the characters grow and develop. I loved the portrayal of real feelings and flawed characters in this book, while still having such strong friendships between the characters. The romance arc is wonderful. I enjoyed the way the characters were supportive and tried to work through their problems together which is something I find so few novels do well. There’s so much to love about this book but I don’t want to spoil anything! If you like paranormal novels with a good dose of mystery, great characters, and moments that make you smile, this book is for you! This is a page turner and I’m already eagerly anticipating the next one!

This is the Author's first book and it is a solid start. I'm gonna go over some Pros and Cons of the book from my perspective. Opinions are my own:

We'll start with the Pros:

-Settings and Characters were set up well. She allows you to like the likable characters and hate the unlikable ones.
-There was no discrepancy in how Lake was treated by the others. Miss Watson was treated just like everyone else (exceptions excluded, of course)
-LGBTQIA Representation!
-An satisfying emotional ending that foreshadows what Lake is going to have to go through emotion-wise

Now, Let's get to some Cons:

-Some Characters that were introduced earlier in the book completely disappear after a certain event. I hope we see them again in Book 2.
- That perspective switch threw me for a paragraph or 2.
-Ending seemed a little rushed. Just seemed like the big secret was revealed, everything starts 2x speed.

Overall:
It's Pros AND Cons together bring this book, for me, to a 4 out of 5. As a New Author, L.C. Watson managed to capture my attention with her writing and I Recommend this book. Brava!
I can't wait for Book 2.

If you love fantasy YA, or even if you don't, I think you'll enjoy A Tale of Fragile Fate. This is a very easy and enjoyable read, even if you may not typically enjoy fantasy. As for me, I am a sucker for fantasy and always have a special place in my heart for YA novels. I'm not entirely sure what I expected for a debut novel, but this really blew me out of the water. The characters feel like real people that all have complex and unique personalities and backgrounds and I got sucked in more and more as each chapter passed until I eventually fell in love with this book and it's crew of characters. I enjoy the different aspects to the supernatural beings, but my only disappointment is not seeing more of the magic in this world (but that doesn't take away from the book at all).

If you want an easy and fun read, pick up A Tale of Fragile Fate! I don't think you'll regret it.

Many thanks to L.C. Watson for the opportunity to read the ARC for this novel. I can't wait to get my hands on my physical copy!

Um, wow. I found this book because I watched the author’s streams. When I first started this book, I felt it was fairly predictable, just another magical kids in a magical school. But I couldn’t find myself putting it down. Something kept me reading, clinging onto it and needing to read more and more. And, although I can agree parts of this book are predictable, I never found it boring. I simply couldn’t get enough. And I was wrong. The way the story ends and the way it turns definitely isn’t how I thought it was going. The part, to me, that really makes this book shine, is the characters. They are so well written and interesting and I found myself enthralled by their relationships. Especially in regard to Reid and Lake. I absolutely devoured chapters related to them, and couldn’t wait to see more. I would absolutely love to see the author attempt a romance novel solely based on how well she got me invested in these characters. I cannot wait for the sequel (please let there be a sequel), I must know more about what happens to these characters.

I picked this up because it was written by a streamer that I follow and she said it had vampires in it. What can I say, I'm a simple creature. Anyway, this book was amazing.

Lake Watson is thrust into the supernatural world as her father sends her and her brother to a new boarding school. Lake has a lot of anxiety and it is translated very well in the writing. As someone who has anxiety, I felt what Lake was going through which isn't something that happens often for me. Daniel is her little brother who is only 10 and their relationship felt like true siblings. At times, there was love and trust, other times, there was frustration and pushing.

One thing that I loved most about this book was how relatable the characters felt. They felt like true teenagers and were easy to relate to. It was easy to think what those years were like for myself and relate to the characters. I love the relationships and the way that Lake views them.

I really enjoyed this book and recommend it to anyone who likes magic, mysteries, and vampires.

The story is ok but feels a little bit like copy paste Harry Potter with a dash of Twilight. Quite a few same plot points, quite a lot of similarities. The book does cram foreshadowing down your throat, fate and destiny mentioned a lot (felt like at least once every chapter). I liked the little romance subplot and the flashbacks (even though they became very repetitive after a few chapters). The ending was the weakest part which is just a confusing waffling mess and suddenly change POV for two chapters without doing so previously. That aside I give it 3 stars since it is a debut novel, and everyone starts somewhere.

Honestly it’s an amazing book and it’s a treat to read. I wasn’t sure at first only because I was nervous it would end up too similar to vampire academy but I couldn’t be more wrong. The descriptions are so unique, the character relationships are so wholesome, and the fact that there is VISIBLE LGBTQ+ characters made me tear up for a bit. They’re not just token characters there to check the LGBT box. I honestly cannot WAIT for the next book to drop because I have fallen hopelessly in love with this world Watson creates.
