I had always wanted to read the book after having seen the film. It was a very long time afterward that I had finally read it. John Le Carre is a superb writer, this particular book being one of suspense.

This is probably the first best and possibly most accurate cold war spy book, the one that launched a genre. Few authors get to invent a new category (mockumentary, etc.) but Le Carre does so here.

Lays out the foundation for the Karla trilogy to come.

Also interesting are the author's views on the public discrace of a debate around the intelligence leading to the Iraq war, and his take on the cold war.

The book looks into the personal cost and moral bankruptcy of spying.

I don't know why it has taken me so long to decide to read this novel. I guess that, despite being a huge reader of science fiction and crime thrillers, I always thought spy stories were a bit silly. This dark and gritty drama is not that. It is tautly written and beautifully austere. In my case, it was also the perfect accompaniment to a visit to Berlin coinciding with the 25th anniversary of the fall of the wall. My appetite is now thoroughly whetted for some more le Carré.

Fantastic book, wonderful atmosphere, great characters and a realistic and untrusting world of the spy. Great plot and twists , I know it was a good ending but I would have liked a happier one!! Fully deserves the title as best spy novel,a definite must read for the avid reader.

This book was awesome. Read it a while ago so my memory's a bit fuzzy but I do remember being completely drawn in by it. Spies and intrigue and everything! John le Carré's pretty great and I can't wait to read more of his books!

the classic spy novel that set the stage for so many others. in some ways, it was a simple tale but the characters are interesting and fun, and the cold war era story depicts some of the chilling reality of that time in Europe,

I have not read Le Carre for some time as I used to find him quite hard going. However, I got stuck into this one and enjoyed the spy yarn
