Its been 20 years since i read this book but I can still remember many parts of it so it must be good. Shows war as it is for infantrymen, not macho tough guy ghost written crap you find today, just the hard truth.
Much better-written than most first-hand accounts. Thoroughly jaundiced about (most) Officers without the superiority complex that sometimes accompanies that common attitude. Doesn’t pretend to have all the answers, just gives an unvarnished - if hotly disputed - account of the war.
An exceptional book written from the ordinary soldiers perspective. Still an all time favourite and one I still pick up and read after all these years since its publication. Respect to Vince and all those who fought.
Interesting view into the mind of a soldier in a hard and dirty (physically and mentally) campaign. Not the easiest book to read, and I’d suggest having knowledge of military terms, but a good insight nonetheless.
