About the author

Marc Levy was born in France. When he turned eighteen, he joined the Red Cross, where he spent the next six years. In 1983, he created a computer graphics company based in France and the United States. Six years later, he co-founded an interior design and planning company with two friends; the company soon became one of the leading architecture firms in France.

At thirty-seven, Marc Levy wrote a story for the man that his son would grow up to be. In early 1999, his sister, a screenwriter (now a film director), encouraged him to send the manuscript to a French publisher, who immediately decided to publish If Only It Were True. Before it was published, Steven Spielberg (Dreamworks) acquired film rights to the novel. The movie, Just like Heaven, starring Reese Witherspoon and Mark Ruffalo, was a #1 box office hit in America in 2005.

After If Only It Were True, Marc Levy began writing full-time. Since then, he has written 18 novels. His work has been translated into 49 languages and has sold over 40 million copies worldwide.

In addition, Marc Levy has directed a short movie, written short stories and song lyrics for various artists, including Johnny Hallyday.

Le Figaro newspaper recently commissioned a nationwide poll asking the French to rank their favorite author: Marc Levy and Victor Hugo were #1.

"Nunca matámos um inocente, nem sequer um imbecil."

Peguei neste livro assim que vi que o tema girava à volta da segunda guerra mundial. Já sei que a História não muda por mais que leia; os carrascos vão-me sempre chocar e o sofrimento das vitimas irá sempre doer-me.
Desta vez havia um pormenor que me deixou curiosa: os protagonistas eram todos adolescentes. Miúdos judeus, repatriados, que viram as famílias partir nos comboios numa viagem sem volta. De alguma formam escaparam às buscas, ficaram sozinhos e quiseram, também eles, participar na luta contra o invasor e contra um governo Françês que se entregou e compactou com o regime nazi.
Tinham entre 16 e vinte a poucos anos, eram rapazes e raparigas que deviam estar na escola, a jogar à bola, a namorar, a divertir-se...em vez disso, espiavam, matavam,faziam explodir pontes, comboios, faziam tudo o que pudesse atrapalhar a progressão do pesadelo.
Foram traídos por aqueles que achavam que a vitória da França só ficaria bem aos franceses; a glória nunca poderia ser de estrangeiros.
Entregues à "justiça" como terroristas, foram presos, torturados e humilhados. A uns, abreviaram-lhes o sofrimento, outros, mais resistentes ou afortunados tiveram direito a uma viagem de comboio rumo a Dachau. Péssimo serviço, o da agência de viagens: viajaram num magote como animais, cheios de sede e fome, feridos, doentes e espancados, infestados de pulgas e piolhos. Seria de esperar que preferissem morrer. Alguns, fizeram essa opção, mas a maioria não perdeu a esperança. Um dia a Primavera vai chegar.
O relato da viagem foi o mais emocionante do livro, e mais uma vez a constatação da resiliência do homem.
Dachau, foi o final da viagem e o final da vida para alguns. Os que sobreviveram viram a sua coragem reconhecida em 1974, pelo ministro do Exército Françês Charles Hernu. Sim, porque a 35ªBrigada existiu e o pai e o tio de Mark Levy fizeram parte dela, e foi a partir dos seus testemunhos que escreveu este livro.

I started reading the first line and I knew immediately that I would be unable to put the book down long after the last words. This is Marc Levy at his finest.

Love is there everywhere, not the kind of sweet, dramatic love in his other works but the most simple, natural, essential kinds of love. Throughout the war, through joy and pain, through tears and blood, though life and death, there is still love.

The name and cover are really great. They suit the book perfectly.

Unei cărți care povestește fapte reale din timpul celui de-al doilea război mondial nu poți să-i dai mai puțin. Povestea tatălui autorului și a unchiului acestuia care copii fiind se alătură rezistenței este halucinantă. Ceea ce m-a frapat a fost faptul că cei din rezistența nu erau toți francezi, ci și de alte naționalități motiv pentru care atunci când se află că vor fi arestați șefii lor refuză să îi ajute deoarece" Franța va avea nevoie ca eroii ei să fie francezi nu străini." Un alt aspect frapant al poveștii se referă la conducătorii miliției franceze care după eliberare în loc să fie pedepsiți pentru colaborare sunt promovați în funcții importante.Oare asta nu ne sună cunoscut?

This is an OUTSTANDING book, so true and inspiring for the great examples of life and generosity of these youth who were part of the French Resistance! It is incredible to think that they were young boys and girls of 17 to 20 years old, and what sacrifices they made for a country that, in many cases, wasn't their country of origin. Through the book, there is one moment when they are going to be arrested by the collaborationist government (who is collaborating with Nazi Germany) and they could have been saved, if not for someone who said: "they are not even French, the Liberation is coming and then France needs French heroes" - No comments!!!!!!!!!! How can anyone be so insensitive and selfish?! Did they deserve the sacrifice of these young men and girls? Some hours later, all of the 35th Brigade fell, even the girls were tortured... Shame on people who do not honour those who are generous to the point of giving their life! Also, in French prisons, these young resistant were shot or even guillotined! And the hatred of both Nazis and Collaborationists was so great, that they tried to deport them to concentrations camps until the very end of the Liberation in France.
Thank God there were those who managed to escape the phantom train to stay alive and tell the story! And later, much later, FRANCE decorated the surviving members of the 35th Brigade.

Moi, j'aime pas beaucoup ce qui a l'air de guerre, d'injustice, etc et surtout si c'était un livre. Si je savais que les enfants de la liberté parlait de l'époque de la guerre, je ne l'aurais sans nul doute jamais lu, mais ce qui m'a séduit c'est que au lieu d'un résumé, il était écrit "On est tous l'étranger de quelqu'un" et c'est ce qui m'avait poussé à tenter le coup, et je ne regrette nullement mon choix, car c'est l"un des meilleurs Levy que j'ai lu, aussi bien que l'histoire. Aussitôt ouvert, tu ne pourra plus te séparer du livre. 4.5/5

“Copiii libertății” de Marc Levy este o carte despre imolație,prietenie,dorința și curajul de a trăi,speranță,și nu în ultimul rând-despre cruzime. Jeannot și Claude sunt doi frați adolescenți care s-au alăturat Rezistenței pentru a lupta împotriva cruzimii. Ei au rănit,distrus și omorât,dar niciodată oameni nevinovați. Erau evrei,și încercau prin îndeplinirea diferitor misiuni să-și ajute aproapele. Își îndeplineau mereu treaba bine,dar în ciuda acestui fapt,au fost închiși și au fost nevoiți să suporte grozăviile din închisoare. După trebuiau să fie deportați în Germania,timp de două luni au îndurat foame,sete,căldură,două luni chinuitoare,dar ei continuau să fie plini de speranță și credeau că va veni ziua când vor fi liberi,vor putea iubi și trăi fără frică. După o perioadă chinuitoare,frații și prietenii alături de care au supraviețuit,au decis că nu a mai rămas nimic de pierdut și hotărăsc să sară din tren.Au făcut o strategie și au acționat.
Reușesc ei oare să supraviețuiască? Vor putea “gusta” libertatea? Sunt întrebări la care citind cartea poți afla un răspuns.
Este o carte tulburătoare și dură,mi-a lăsat un gol în suflet,deoarece este imposibil să rămâi imperturbabil la așa ceva.E trist să vezi cum niște tineri sunt capabili să îndure atât de multe dar în același timp nu renunță,dar îi ajută și pe cei mai neputincioși decât ei și îi îndeamnă să creadă că vor fi eliberați într-o buna zi,după cum spuneau ei “va veni primăvara”. După multe evenimente,lecții și cărți despre ororile celui de-Al Doilea Război Mondial,am reușit oricum să vărs niște lacrimi la această carte,și autorul a reușit să mă lase fără cuvinte prin cele relatate. Am simpatizat multe personaje,fiind conturați atât de real,râdeam alături de ei,și plângeam când se sfârșea viața unora dintre ei. Este un roman greu din punct de vedere emoțional,dar merită a fi citit.

Une lecture marquante et émouvante. Ce roman raconte l’histoire de plusieurs résistants français, mais principalement celle du père et de l’oncle de Marc Lévy. J’ai aimé que le récit soit relaté de façon franche, sans « fla fla » ou tentative de romancer le quotidien de ces résistants. Je n’ai pas mis 5 étoiles parce que la première moitié du livre était difficile à suivre. Le style était très descriptif et il y avait tellement de personnages que je devais souvent retourner en arrière pour me mettre en contexte. Le roman finit par prendre son rythme une fois les liens entre les personnages bien établis. La deuxième moitié du livre m’a captivée et révoltée. J’en suis encore bouleversée, surtout considérant que cette histoire a dû être tellement difficile à écrire pour Marc Lévy, étant si proche de lui!

Je pense que c’est le Lévy que j’ai le moins aimé pour l’instant et pourtant le résumé aurait laissé penser le contraire. J’aime beaucoup les livres qui parlent de la seconde guerre mondiale et de la résistance, c’est peut être pour cela que j’ai eu un avis beaucoup plus critique. J’ai trouvé l’histoire très décousue, on passe vite d’une histoire a une autre, beaucoup de choses se passent mais tout en surface. La dernière parti du livre qui se passe dans le train est sûrement la plus intéressante mais pareil on passe vite d’une chose à une autre sans rien approfondir ...
Mention spéciale pour le lieu de l’histoire, c’est rare lorsque les livres se passent à Toulouse et que Albi est cité. En plus le cœur de l’action se passe vraiment dans le quartier où mon école était donc je pouvais vraiment m’imaginer les scènes en voyant les lieux précis.

A novel that is totally different from all other Marc Levy's novels. This novel doesn't talk about the kind of love that Marc Levy always so passionate tells in his story. This story also tells story about love but a completely distinguish kind of love - the love for their country - the patriotism. I dont think this is a good book at first, but then it was so good that I even cry in the end. This book is just simply good and amazing.

Volevamo diventare medici, operai, artigiani, insegnanti. Non abbiamo imbracciato le armi nel momento in cui ci hanno privato di questi diritti, ma solo dopo, quando hanno cominciato a deportare bambini, a fucilare compagni.

Sono ragazzi, molti poco più che bambini, eppure sono determinati, hanno sangue freddo, cervello, coraggio da vendere, amano la vita, amano la libertà. Odiano i nazisti, i loro soprusi, la loro disumana cattiveria.
Molti di loro non ce la faranno, ma qualcuno - fortunatamente - sopravviverà per raccontare tutto ciò.

«Vedrai, un giorno avrai uno, due figli, o anche di più, non ho tempo per contarli adesso. Ma dovrai chiedergli un favore da parte mia, dovrai dirgli che si tratta di una cosa molto importante. Una promessa che loro padre ha fatto tanto tempo fa, in un passato che non esiste più. Perché un giorno questo passato di guerra non esisterà più, vedrai Jeannot. Dirai ai tuoi figli di raccontare la nostra storia, nel loro mondo libero. Gli parlerai della nostra lotta. Gli insegnerai che su questa terra niente conta di più di quella puttana della libertà, sempre pronta a vendersi al miglior offerente. Perché quella cagna ama l'amore degli uomini e fuggirà sempre da quelli che vogliono incatenarla, e regalerà la vittoria a chi la rispetta senza pretendere di farla sua. Jeannot, devono raccontare tutto questo da parte mia, con le loro parole, quelle del loro tempo. Le mie sono piene dell'accento del mio Paese, e del sangue che mi riempie la bocca e mi sporca le mani.»

E Jeannot ha mantenuto la promessa.
Ha raccontato.

È partito in sordina, questo romanzo, lentamente. Sembrava più un succedersi di eroiche azioni di sabotaggio a danno dei nazisti, un accavallarsi di pensieri, paure, speranze, fantasie, delusioni e dolore, sempre in attesa di una prossima primavera.
Pian piano però la narrazione si è fatta più serrata, sono stati assunti altri toni per assecondare gli avvenimenti e ciò ha dato origine ad emozioni forti, fino alla commozione assoluta, soprattutto nell’ultima parte e nel finale.
Eh, sì, groppo in gola e lucciconi...

Alcuni passaggi sono molto crudi, ti costringono a chiudere gli occhi; altri danno i brividi, come quello appena riportato, o risultano di estrema umanità, come questi che seguono:

Come vedi, ti sto raccontando la storia di un prete che si priva del cibo per un arabo, di un arabo che salva un ebreo dandogli ancora un motivo di speranza, di un ebreo che tiene un arabo tra le braccia mentre muore, nell’attesa che venga il proprio turno. Vedi, è la storia del mondo degli uomini, con i suoi momenti di inaspettata meraviglia.

Ogni volta che sento qualcuno esprimere le proprie idee in un mondo libero, penso a loro. Allora mi ricordo che la parola «straniero» è una delle più belle promesse del mondo, una promessa a colori, bella come la Libertà.


A libro concluso, mi sono sentita... vuota.

Vuota.

Penso che le quattro stelle siano più che meritate.

Marc Levy ist der Sohn eines "Kindes der Hoffnung". Er erzählt die Geschichte seines Vaters, der 17jährig zusammen mit seinem jüngeren Brunder Claude in eine Brigade der Résistance eintritt, um den Nazis und der Regierung des Vichyfrankreichs möglichst große Steine in den Weg zu legen, sprich den größtmöglichen Schaden an Munition, Brücken, Eisenbahnen etc. anzurichten. In nüchternen Worten, tagebuchähnlich begleiten wir die beiden Brüder und ihre Genossen auf Schritt und Tritt bis zum Ende. Ein wichtiges Buch, das gerade in seiner Einfachheit erschüttert.

تتقلب شخصيات الرواية بين السجن والمقاومة والمقاومة الساذجة , وصف الزنزانات يجعلك تنتقل الى هناك .
((ستطلب منهم أن يخبروا حكايتنا، في عالمهم الحر، أننا خضنا الحروب لأجلهم، ستعلمهم أن لا شيء يعود مهماً على هذه الأرض إلا تلكم الساقطة التي تسمى الحرية والقادرة على أن تقدم نفسها لمن يدفع أكثر.))

Assez différent des Marc Levy précédents, je n'ai pas vraiment aimé.
J'ai l'impression que l'auteur cherche à nous faire pleurer à tout prix et pour cette raison il insiste beaucoup sur l'époque et le destinée tragique de plusieurs personnes ayant traversé ces temps.
Or je pense qu'il n'y as besoin d'en faire autant. On sait que les années 39-40 n'ont pas été faciles, pas besoin d'en faire des tonnes pour qu'on comprenne la gravité du moment.
Donc je me suis un peu ennuyée, je me suis surprise à lever souvent les yeux au ciel.

Une histoire sur les enfants qui ont lutté pour la liberté. Ceux qui se sont battus pour un monde meilleur. Ceci nous rappelle que la liberté que nous tenons pour acquis aujourd'hui a coûté des milliers de vies, de rêves et de sacrifices. Il aura fallu lutter pour avoir cette liberté dont nous jouissons aujourd'hui.

Un ode au courage, à la bravoure, à l'insoumission ...ce livre est un hommage à tous ces héros méconnus, lesquels à travers leurs actions contre l'occupant nazi et les milices abjectes, n'ont jamais cessé et de croire en la liberté.. à travers cette histoire bouleversante que ne s'estompe jamais la flamme de la liberté !!!!
