Enochian Vision Magick( An Introduction and Practical Guide to the Magick of Dr. John Dee and Edward Kelley) <> Paperback <> LonMiloDuQuette <> WeiserBooks
An outstanding practical approach to Enochian Magick and one which anyone can approach with dedication. I was privileged to attend Lon's Monday Night Enochian Magick classes while reading this book. This book really helped me understand the principles of scrying generally, and offers a way to directly engage with astral work. Highly recommended for the curious beginner and the seasoned magician alike.
Recently I decided to pick up a copy of "Enochian Vision Magick" by Lon Milo DuQuette. Much of the book is focused on the journey of Elizabethan real-life Merlin figure Dr. John Dee and his assistant Edward Kelly as they attempted to create a system of angelic summoning esoteria. They endured many trials and tribulations and at several points it seemed like the angels were messing with them.
The men would work tirelessly for weeks writing down spiritual communications and trying to piece it all together only for an angel to show up and basically say "yeah, we were just screwing with you, that's not how it really works, you're going to have to start all over again but this time we'll tell you the truth, pinky swear!".
Enochian sorcery can best be described as a mix of cryptography, mystical sudoku, theatricality and a few weekends worth of handicrafts. I found the story of John Dee and Edward Kelly to be very inspiring, they went through a great ordeal in order to explore unknown realms and they ended up creating a system that is being used by many people to this day.

In the mid 1580s, John Dee and Edward Kelly transcribed a series of scrying sessions. Scrying is the art of inducing hypnagogic visions while staring at an amorphous visual surface, like an obsidian mirror, a crystal ball, embers, or the surface of a still pool. These sessions revealed the structure of consciousness. Since the early XX Century, Psychonauts have been exploring this space. DuQuette provides you with everything you would need to proceed to scry the four elemental watchtowers of the angels and the thirty realms of heaven (Aethyrs). Lot's of details on the way that John Dee and Edward Kelly originally produced this material. Some key insights into the so-called High Magick practice. If your goal is to manipulate your world more to your liking might I suggest this is not your kind of book. This is more of an explorers guide book.
I recently had reason to cast my eyes back over Lon's Enochian book as I refreshed my mind concerning the origins of the system and the precise derivation of the various names, etc.
It remains one of the clearest, most informative, most practical and objective books ever penned on the origins and utilisation of the Dee material. It should be on every Enochian student's bookshelf.
As always with a Lon Milo book it makes the complex seem easy. It's a a great introduction to this topic and an excellent reference book. The author's writing style is easy to read and he makes what could be a very scholarly book accessible to the curious.
I might’ve even seen a documentary on Crowley he was featured in.
I didn’t like him.
I needed a refresher on Enochian Magic.
I needed to hear the story of the angels again from a different perspective.
I was so hesitant to pick this book up.
Then, the impossible happened.
I fell in love with this author!
Okay… maybe not in love. But wow, what a great read.
Lon Milo Duquette made the story of Enochian Magic fun and enjoyable. Not an easy task for a subject like this!
It’s obvious that he’s genuinely passionate about all things magic(k).
This makes for a really great teacher.
I learned a few things!
There were some aspect of the Enochian system that I wasn’t totally clear on, and reading this book helped tune me up.
I withhold all my criticisms of this book from an initiate-perspective, because I genuinely enjoyed his witty and playful banter all too much to spoil it for myself.
There were just a few areas where I felt he missed the mark. But I’m learning not everyone needs to be an initiate to write a great book on magic.
Lon Milo Duquette proved this to me perfectly.
I want to read more!
Perhaps not for his lectures in theurgy, but for more Lon! 😁

I leave only this quote from one of the last paragraphs of his book:
“I must confess that my attitudes concerning Enochian ma-gick have changed many times in the thirty years it has been part of my life. My respect for the magical art form, however, has never diminished and has continued to grow unabated. I feel like the musician who is moved to tears by listening to a great symphony, but who can play only a few tunes himself and those only moderately well.”
I admire this admission so much.
This sort of attitude is what kept me locked into this book until the end. There’s something about this author that I just plain admire.
This book contains numerous references to the material that is more than 400 years old, which itself is often based on considerably older information.
Lon Milo DuQuette uses simple language. This is a reasonable approach because Enochian Magick is a very complicated subject.
You will enjoy this book: - if you need assistance and advice with the practical application of Enochian Magick; - if you like theory; - if you enjoy reading theory about theory; - and most importantly, if you are interested in Enochian Magick.
Thus, this book can be used as a source of theoretical background and practical guidance on how to apply all this in practice.
Please note that you will benefit more from this work if you have knowledge and previous experience with Enochian Magick before reading it. Otherwise, you won’t be able to understand large parts of the text.
So, is Enochian Magick real? I see it this way: if you perceive Enochian Magick as a form of fantasy, then it will remain just a fiction for you. If you think Enochian Magick exists (or if you at least partially believe in it), then it is/will be a real experience for you.
Another interesting fact is that (despite) being a ceremonial magic, to my mind, Enochian Magick is extremely flexible in the sense that it can be used as the Right-Hand Path or the Left-Hand Path or even as a combination of both (which isn’t a synonym for the Middle Path, though).
The summary: you will like this book if you already know before getting it, why you have chosen to read this work!
Lon Milo Duquette has gone to the source of Enoquian Magic, and it has told the story of how it was developed. The story in itself is a great example of how magic can work when there is a strong connection with something that is not human. The way Duquette has written the book makes it great as a spooky story. Angels who give cryptographic codes that only can be decyphered after they are done. A new language that makes sense, written letter by letter with the help of a crystal ball. All the elements for a wonderful movie. But this is not the best. Duquette is a magician, and he has worked with Enoquian magic for many years, connected with this angelic entities and worked with different groups of people, checking the results, and he has come up with an amazing example of practical magic. To practice Enoquian magic, you only need to follow the instructions. One of the virtues of this book is that it goes to the source, but it does not reject all the developments of the Golden Dawn. The author just cleans the field, taken out the unnecessary adds, and recover what was lost. Recommended as a book to read, and as a book to practice.
Except for being annoyed at it having endnotes rather than footnotes and having to flick to them every time I wanted to know what note Lon had added, it's a great read and introduction to the Enochian system.
This goes into more detail but is also very readable, not tedious. I will be combining this with Corwin Hargrove’s Universal Magick which also has Enochian magick in it as well. Seems like the two books would work well in tandem as this one helps to inform the background of the other.
Excellent resource. Very well written and researched. I wanted to understand what Enochian Magick was, and I now feel that I have a basic grasp of the basics. If I wanted to go further, this book would take me there, too.
Wonderful overview on how to begin a practice in Enochian Magick. DuQuette provides an accessible journey for readers to practice communication with the angels.
I'm trying to round out my Magick; this stuff is interesting alittle too detailed for me but I guess I' ll just have to plant my feet...dig in and just get started.
I was introduced to Lon Milo DuQuette when he wrote the forward to another of my favorite authors Jason Augustus Newcomb on the subject of modern magick and Enochian magick. On Mr. Newcomb's recommendation I sought out books by Lon Milo DuQuette and chose Enochian Vision Magic. I am so glad that I did because this text has become among my top favorites on this subject. The serious student of Enochian magick will quickly realize after the first few pages what a treasure they now hold in their hands. Mr. DuQuette's exhaustive and comprehensive treatment of this complicated system of magick anticipates the questions that inevitably rise in the reader's mind with a thoroughly satisfying handling of the topic. Well done!
This one is really easy! Rarely a book is so easy to rate: *****
I am in total agreement with preface comment that this book would be worth a tooth pulled out, if it would be available in the 90's when we experimented with Shueller's Enochian, let's say, 'style'. There were absolutely no other books available to us in Slovenia. Later the 'Enochian Evocations' gave us to drink from its Well but before... Oh my!
Even today it solves one of my bigger questions regarding hierarchies of Archangels/Kerubins vs. Calvaric Crosses/Lesser Angels.
It gives a unique invocation procedure and in short: I really like it!
This book is easy to understand, and a great place to start for understanding Enochian magical workings. It goes in to detail on how to make the props if you can't afford the real thing. It explains how the magick squares are formed and what the letters mean as well as how to put it all together to form a basic ritual. I'd recomend reading other works on enochian and other forms of ceremonial magick before trying any of this out, though. Get a broader perspective of what Enochian entities might be, before you invite one over for tea.
Full-on practical modern 'grimoire' giving a lively introduction to the enochian material and its use. Very Golden Dawn based, with thelemic seasoning. Thorough and good humoured. Will give access to the basic techniques and a familiarity with the 'Great Table' and the language, and follows the chronology of the received material including the 'Heptarchia', Loagaeth, the Calls and Liber Scientiæ. Recommended.
It would seem that this is the best introductory volume on the subject available. It is both comprehensive and a great reference that should help the beginner for quite a few years. As I have grown to be disappointed with many of DuQuette's books, this one reminded of why I liked him so many years ago when I read "The Magick Of Thelema" and "Angels, Gods & Demons Of The New Millenium".
Enochian magick is a very complex and often confusing topic. Arrives Lon Duquette to the scene to help navigate these complex waters to a seemingly workable system. I am not at the level of practicing Enochian yet, but after reading this I am drawing up the blueprint to make my own Holy Table, elemental tablets, and sigilium dei. Bravo Mr. Duquette! You never cease to impress.
EXCELLENT. Not at all preachy or pushy. Written from a very subjective point of view. This is how all informational religious / occult books need to be written. Very highly recommended.
