William H. Wharton, one of the founders of the Republic of Texas, lays out his moral case for Texian secession from the Republic of Mexico in this short pamphlet. Wharton's reasons are based in a Jeffersonian vision of Anglo-American settlement based on white democracy, reflexive antipathy towards Roman Catholicism, and material progress consistent with laissez-faire capitalism. Wharton's argument bears more hallmarks of American nationalism than figures such as Stephen F. Austin, who had hoped to remain loyal Mexican citizens.

Interesting reading, but I'm not sure I'm entirely buying his account. It was good to read the story from the Texan point of view, and he makes some good arguments.
