Written specifically for beginning undergraduates who have little or no previous knowledge of the subject, this is a distinctive and thoughtful introduction to the main problems of philosophy, structured around a philosophical argument which is clearly and carefully developed throughout the book.
Dewi Zephaniah Phillips, usually cited as D.Z. Phillips, is recognized for his work in the philosophy of religion and other philosophical disciplines. He was also a proponent of preserving the Welsh language.
Phillips's contribution here is mainly in showing how the philosopher, when she plays the skeptic's game (i.e., answers the questions of the skeptics on the skeptic's ground) automatically loses. The import of this book is to show how the philosopher is able to take a stand against radical skepticism by examining arguments (especially about foundationalism) in light of Wittgenstein's philosophy.
Amazing indeed! If you only read one book in philosophy, this should be it. Dr. Phillips passed away in the summer of '06. He was a great man. This book will make you think!
