Today could be the day that your life changes forever...
Teenage twins James and Samantha Blake are caught up in a seemingly random terrorist bombing while on a school trip. Many of their friends are killed. When the twins wake up in hospital, their lives have changed forever.
The doctors are amazed at the speed with which James and Sam recover from their injuries and, when the twins begin to exhibit extraordinary powers, it is obvious that something incredible has happened.
As James and Sam attempt to overcome their fears and embrace their new abilities, a series of murders and disappearances start plaguing the hospital. The twins aren’t the only ones with special abilities and it becomes apparent that someone is coming for them.
Will James and Sam be able to survive the nightmare into which they have been plunged? Who, or what, is behind the murders at the hospital? And was that terrorist incident quite so random after all?
I began writing the first Class Heroes book on my laptop in February 2011, but these stories have probably been continually playing in my head since I was aged five or six, when I would act them out with toys and with my friends. I then branched out into using pencils, colouring pens and paper, moving on to writing pads and then my first computer.
So, as you’ve probably gathered, I have always enjoyed making up stories and the super-hero genre has been one of my favourites.
The CV-type stuff is that I went to Sheffield Hallam University to study English. I then trained and briefly worked as a journalist in Salford. After that, I moved into publishing – which was great. An interesting and fun industry to be in and fascinating to see how books are put together and sold.
After that I started doing technical writing, which led me to start my own business with my friend and colleague Andrew Butters. My love of writing, generally, led me back to writing fiction. Our company, Elucidox Ltd, publishes the Class Heroes books.
If you want to know a bit more about me, what kind of super powers I have and the kind of super villains I have to tangle with on a daily basis, then feel free to watch Rage. This is a short film, that took a long time to make. It’s a simple day in my life :-). Actually it’s just a fun movie that I made with the very kind help of some of my best mates. We had a laugh doing it, hope you like it too. And if you do, then why not explore the super world of the Class Heroes books?
TERRIBLY AWESOME story!!!! Shocking, surprising, EXCITING , interesting , well built story. I feel the fear, joyness , sadness while reading. Such a AMAZING story. Like a TERRIFYING HORROR FILM!!!!!!! 5*****

As one sits down to read a book, one always wonders if the first few chapters will catch their attention and imagination..will this be a book worth finishing? A CLASS APART is one of those books that takes about 5 paragraphs to confirm to the reader that, indeed, this is a book that must be read. It is that good!
The key to a successful novel is the character development and plot. Stephen Henning has produced a novel that succeeds on all levels- A CLASS APART is a book I dare you to put down! Sam and James are characters that are very well rendered, very finely drawn, that the reader- regardless of age, can grasp onto their most horrifying of situations. They frame the plot- which includes many twists and plots- yet never confuse the readers- rather- engage them- and the ending is one that will remain with you for quite a long time. very highly recommended.
RICK FRIEDMAN FOUNDER THE JAMES MASON COMMUNITY BOOK CLUB
Oh my gosh I'm so sorry but I just think that Samantha and James Blake are one of the most adorable twins that I have ever known (through reading this story)!! :)
The story began with the bombing of a school bus which Sam and James were in, along with their teachers, some parents, and their classmates. The investigators who were assigned to this case thought that this was about terrorist attacks but after things started getting a little weird, they felt that it was more than that, that maybe, there were only specific persons targeted and they were determined to know who they were.
First, I loved the thrill and the suspense that I felt while reading this. I was looking forward to what will happen next and I can't wait to read the next installment for the story of the twins. One thing that I have found kind of strange though were the sleepwalkers, which you will later find out more in the story, maybe because it has been a while since I have read a paranormal book. But nevertheless, I was attached to the story and I can't stop reading the moment I started.
I liked the way James and Samantha thought about the things around them, and the strange things that were happening to them. There were times when they should have done what needs to be done, but most of the time, they were distracted, either by Jasmin, the tenacious journalist, or by Lolly, who I still don't know what her role exactly is, but I THINK she is not a friend.
The twins felt weird sometimes, and they are slowly realizing that there were changes that were happening within them. But you will really enjoy reading their thoughts and there were some funny bits in the story every now and then.
On a more serious note, the bravery that the twins have shown in the story is amazing and very admirable. Not all kids these days will rescue and think of other people first before considering themselves. I also loved the bond that existed between James and Samantha. They were not the type of twins who were afraid that if they showed too much affection or bond in public, they will be teased. NO. They were adorable for me and very sweet. A great role model for other teenagers out there.
Stephen Henning definitely got me with this book. The mystery, the action, the cleverness of the writing, the vividness of the descriptions, and the cliffhanger in the end! I wanted to know more about what will happen next to Samantha and James and I can't wait for the next installment.
And also, YOU GUYS HAVE TO CHECK OUT 24/7 INTERACTIVE NEWS for updates (by the way 24/7 interactive news covered the story about the bombing), and CLASS HEROES' WEBSITE because in there, you can get a glimpse of what Sam and James look like, they also have their blogs (yes) and their twitter accounts (yes that's so cute right?). So make sure that you drop by their sites and know more about them. Sorry, I seem to fancy them so much :-)
Great job, Mr. Henning!
*I received an ebook from the author in exchange for an honest review. This, however, did not influence my review in any way.*
While on a school trip two siblings Sam and James are caught up in a terrorist attack with a car bomb while the bus driver is passing through. Friends and teachers from the front part of the bus are killed instantly and others get seriously injured. James was spared from getting killed because he went to the back side of the bus to give Emma Venton, his sister´s nemesis a piece of his mind after she bullied his sister before the car exploded. Some class mates survived and/or were in coma so they are taken to the hospital. Sam and James are taken into different wards. The doctors are amazed on how quickly the two kids are healing from their injuries. Strange things are happening in this hospital. Sam is pretty sure there are few of her class mates wandering in the halls but the hospital personnel don´t notice it. Doctors and nurses are acting strange like if they were sleepwalking and nobody know why all of this is happening not even ME.!!! It is so frustrating one of my thoughts were: Is Lolly doing this? Who´s behind this events? There are several dissapearences and kills and you seriously think the person behind all of this is the Venton girl ... I guess it makes sense because she´s mean and a bully but I think there much more to it. The siblings develop several super powers after the accident but we don´t know why they have them. The police gets involved and the only lead they have is that the siblings are being targeted by someone and tries to get them out of the hospital without people noticing it. The investigation leads them to 36h floor. Sam gets momentarily abducted by her classmates that apparently are sleepwalking (someone is controlling them. Who?!) just like the nurses that try to stop James from helping his sister when he notices that people are taking her sister´s bed out of her room. That´s when Sam discovers her power of fire manipulation and avoid getting kidnapped. James discovers he has the ability to teleport and go wherever he wants. He appears in a McDonalds by mistake LOL :S What will happen when people get to floor #36?... Why do this kids have super powers? Who´s behind all this? What does Lolly and her father want with Sam and James? For what purpose? By the end this book was full of drama. There´s an unavoidable situation for a character that "didn´t interact" in the whole book but still you shed tears. I would like to see more of Lolly´s story, why is she that way (evil.!)?
I´ll have to read the second installment because seriously.!! I hate to finish reading a book and having so many questions with no answers and a lot of assumptions damn I´m hooked :D
I agreed to read and review this novel on Goodreads. I wasn’t quite sure what to make of the storyline when I read the excerpt, but it intrigued me. I went to Mr. Henning’s website, http://www.classheroes.com/, to learn more. I was impressed with the amount of content and time it took to put together such a brilliant website. The novel was written just as well as the website was put together and I was impressed! The storyline was full of drama, twists and turns. At times I was on the edge of my seat waiting for the next crisis to unfold. The ending was not something I imagined would happen, so I look forward to reading Mr. Henning’s sequel!
If I could give this novel 10 stars, I would do it! It is well written, suspenseful and a story every person young and old would enjoy. I highly recommend this book!
By the way, I'm not sure how long this will last, but the book is free on Amazon. Hurry on over there and snag the Kindle version if you can.
This book made me think I should read some fun stuff. I took the adventure with twins James and Samantha Blake. This was more of a teen y/a book. Even though it was still good. There wasn't a difference in the wording or anything either. It was very engaging.
Basically the twins are on a bus when an explosion happens. Class Heroes is so far, a two book series, but easily can expand. The adventures of these two and Lolly can be a huge hit. What I would like to see is some marketing and maybe some involvement withe the website: 24/7 Interactive News
The entire read is packed with adventures and mysteries. From the bus accident to the hospital stay it has you really involved. You are caught thinking who is hiding, who put a GPS tracer on someone and was the accident just that? an accident. I am very happy to enjoy more and follow the Blake family! So readers and bloggers get on this one it may be the key to getting your teens to read this summer. **reminder it is a Y/A book
Samantha and James Blake are twins who are involved in a horrible bombing while on board a school bus for an outing. It is a suspected act of terrorism, but is actually something far more dangerous and sinister. As Samantha and James felt the flames licking their skin all James could think about was how he wanted out of the bus. He could feel the skin of a classmate melting into his own, and his only thought was to escape out of the bus. Samantha felt the fire and heat and saw the devastation and wished it was over; that the fire injuring her friends and threatening her life could be extinguished. Neither twin got their wish, but they did escape the tragedy with their lives as well as the lives of a few other friends and classmates. But as Samantha and James awaken in the hospital they begin to realize that nothing is as it seems.
The bombing was just the beginning of a far more treacherous plan, but the twins can’t even begin to comprehend what is going on at the hospital let alone figure out who could be behind the bombing. The police are trying to keep the twins segregated from the general population, because it is suspected that they may have been the targets of this attack. Samantha is able to find out that piece of information off of her phone. Several times throughout this book Samantha and James see some of the severely bandaged kids moving like they are zombies. At one point Samantha is attacked by several of them as they try to bring her to the top floor of the abandoned wing of the hospital. Strangely enough, none of the nurses even pay attention to her screams. James notices the same thing as he tries to help Samantha. The nurses are actually blocking his path to his sister. What could cause this? And how is it that both James and Samantha are healing from such severe injuries so rapidly to the point of barely leaving a scar behind? Just what is going on here? Why is James so ravenous that he’s craving McDonald’s and he finds himself in the McDonald’s in the hospital when moments before he was lying in his bed? Samantha too is ravenous all the time, but she’s not teleporting herself into any fast food chains! However, she is noticing that things in her room are moving. The TV that was bothering her just moments before is shut off. Hmmm, interesting.
James and Samantha’s father tells them that they need to get them out of the hospital and to their grandparents house as quickly as possible, but leaving the hospital is going to be much harder than anyone ever thought.
I really enjoyed this book. There are several books similar to this, that I’ve read lately and this seemed to capture the mind of a teenager the best. Henning did an excellent job either remembering his own past, or researching how teenagers think and act. There were several times during the book when James would pull one of his heroic stunts; that he hadn’t thought out at all where all I could do was thunk my hand against my head. Several times I caught myself getting frustrated when James would get distracted when Samantha was trying to figure things out and his mind would wander to Lolly the “hot girl” he had seen on the roof. It struck me then, that not only was I truly engaged in the book but also that Henning really understood exactly what a teenage boy’s thought process would be like! This had me wanting to figure out the “big picture” mystery as well as the mystery surrounding the hospital. Henning did such a good job with the ending that I felt sympathy for; well you’ll just have to read the book to find out who! Trust me when I say you won’t regret it!
I was given a copy of Class Heroes in exchange for an honest review. I thought that the blurb did well in that it drew me to the book and made me want to read it. I thought that the cover was a little underdone and not very professional. It didn't really work and seemed a little on the amateurish side. As for the book itself and the story, here are the things that I liked and the things I didn't like.
The things that I liked:
I liked the two main characters. Their characters were very well written and had really great personalities. They seemed to work well with each other in the book and were very natural most of the time. I also liked the character of Philip Randerson and the explanation for his powers. Lolly was also a very great character and made a really awesome villain. There were other characters as well that I thought worked really well in the book. Overall, I thought the story was a strong one. It was a cool and different take on superheroes. Although I would've liked to have known more about why they were targeted and their family history that made them targets, I understand why it was left unsaid. It gives the reader something to look forward to in the upcoming books.
The things that I didn't like:
Okay. First of all, I do think this book has a lot of potential. There are just a few areas that distracted me or made me lose interest. I caught a lot of grammatical/misspellings/etc errors. Those are very distracting to the reader. I found myself stumbling over them constantly. You might be able to get away with them here and there but too many and it becomes a chore to read. The plot was a little too slow at times and could've used a little more cohesion. At this point, I think the mysterious villain backing Lolly and Lolly herself should've been in the story a lot more. They were the initial cause of the attack but you barely hear from them. The sleepwalkers were a slow start. I think maybe they should've been explained a little earlier. I liked that plot, but I think it could use some touch ups. I'm not sure what, exactly, but I do know that I only found myself actually wanting to to read the book in the last couple of chapters of the book. I think there has to be more suspense and action. Something to draw the reader in and make them want to keep reading.
Overall, I did like the story. It was a good one. Maybe not great, but it has the potential to be great.
This is my honest review. You can like it, love it, or hate it. That's just what I alone think.
A Class Apart by Steve Henning is about British twins, James and Samantha, whose lives change forever after a terrorist attack on their school bus. Sam and James wake up in hospital and gradually discover they have extraordinary abilities. Meanwhile, strange events being unfolding at the hospital and the twins need to quickly come to grips with their new powers, to save themselves and everyone around them.
This book was exciting and stimulating. I really enjoyed the beginning scenes on the school bus, where we learn about the mouth breathers, the bullies, and the high school social hierarchy. Then, just when I was bonding with the school kids and settling in for a book full of teenage angst and relationships, a bomb exploded and it was a whirlwind ride from there.
If you enjoy fast-paced action books, with a supernatural element and a mystery, then this is a book for you. I was enthralled as I tried to figure everything out and follow the characters development into super-beings. Despite their amazing powers, the characters seem like real people, with solid back stories, and real life problems.
The book also felt very original to me. I liked that it was unpredictable and the characters discovered things long before I worked them out for myself. At one point I got a bit restless with most of the story being set in the hospital, and I lost track of all of the police officers and what they were doing. But it didn’t hamper my ability to enjoy the story and the pages kept turning themselves. I felt very satisfied when the loose ends were all tied up thoroughly at the end of the book (except for those leading to the sequel of course).
I also liked the multimedia aspect of the book. The Class Apart website has links to book trailers and news reports from the 24/7 Interactive News service which is featured in the book.
In summary, A Class Apart is a fun, enjoyable read, suitable for teenagers and adults alike.
I received this book in exchange for an honest review.
What James and Sam Blake thought was a casual day to end their school trip concluded with their coach exploding with what seems to be a car bomb, a suspected terrorist attack. Everything was in a blur and the next thing they know was waking up in a hospital bed.
Recovery seems to be a smooth sail until peculiar things happen to them. James being able to unknowingly teleport, Sam having the ability to burn things – powers they did not know they had. And then there were the appearances of heavily bandaged patients, the sleepwalkers wreaking havoc within the hospital premises. The road to recovery looks rough for the twins.
The premise of the story sounded passe. A plot repeatedly used in a lot of sci-fi stories but what gave an edge to it was the twist, and unfolding of answers/mysteries towards the end. I like the fact that it built up your curiosity too much that you wanted to know more what happens next. Although the climax was a bit of a let down, its forgivable.
Samantha woke up in a hospital room, and because her phone never left her side, she was reading an article on the 24/7 Interactive website about a terrorist bombing of a school bus and the press was speculating that the twins might have been the target. Samantha and James were the only twins on the bus, so they must be talking about them, but why would anyone want to harm them? They were just ordinary teenagers. As she scrolled down the page, she saw another article about a teenage boy who had "fallen" out of a 36th-story window at the hospital she was in, Brent Valley General. James had told her he was going to the 36th floor and the thought went through her mind, could it be him?
Lolly had videotaped the explosion and sent it to her Daddy. When she went to the hospital to check out Samantha, she took a gadget out of her pocket, made a small cut in Samantha's arm and rubbed a slide through the blood. When she ran the slide through the gadget and it came up Analysis complete, she saw the range was 60-80%. Her brother, James had tested the same. Her Daddy was right. Before she left, she installed Spyware on Samantha's phone, just as she had done to James's.
As Sam watched the news on her phone, she saw a photo that showed everyone, even the dead, being pulled from the burning bus. The press emphasized the fact that it was all done in nine minutes. She remembered the feeling she'd had of being carefully taken from the bus and a hand brushing the hair from her face. Who was the mystery man that had saved so many lives. While Samantha was staring at the window in her hospital door, she saw several patients wrapped in bandages walk by, but couldn't tell if any were her friends. As she watched, one of them stopped and put her hand on the window. Samantha's running trophy, flowers and cards went flying off the window sill. How had that happened?
Chief Superintendent Alan Hardy was keeping a tight grip on the information being released from the investigation and had very firmly laid down the law to the press urging them to use restraint and to stay away from the injured kids in the hospital. Why were they being so secretive? Jasmin, from 24/7 Interactive news was determined to find out, so she staged spilling her coffee on her blouse during the press conference to gain access to the Mobile Command Center. She distracted the PC inside by removing her blouse, talking all the time, and pretended to remove her bra. She said she would be quick and went into the Chief's office, took off her bra and donned her clean blouse. She took the opportunity to hide a recorder. When she would retrieved it later after the Chief had left the scene she realized she had found her story.
Samantha and James had always had a special connection, which they didn't think was odd because they were twins, but since they had been in the hospital strange things had been happening. James had been sleeping, thinking about how hungry he was and that there was a McDonald's downstairs in the hospital. James had vanished from his hospital room and woke up at the McDonald's unable to remember how he got there. Samantha told him about her running trophy, flowers and cards flying off the window sill all be themselves and the TV turning itself on. They were uneasy and afraid of what was going on around them. Samantha also told James how she yelled and screamed for help, but no one would answer her or the nurses alarm she kept pushing.
As James went to get help, no one paid any attention to him. It was as if he wasn't even there, as if they were sleepwalking. When he looked back toward Samantha's room, he saw what looked like patients wheeling Samantha's bed from her room. She was screaming at the top of her lungs and still everyone acted as if nothing was going on. Had everyone gone crazy? Why was no one helping? Where were they taking Samantha and what were they going to do to her?
I received this book in exchange for an honest and unbiased review. All I can say is WOW! I was blown away by this book. I read it straight through, it took me six hours. I devoured it. The suspense built from the beginning and continued to the last page. The cover was interesting and caught my eye. I really liked the clean, crisp, simplistic look. The cover and the title were both descriptive of the book. It was very well written and the story flowed very smoothly. A lot of times, the books I read that are by authors from the UK can be difficult to read and the flow can be interrupted by the phraseology. Definitely not so here. The characters were both likeable and hateable. I loved Samantha for her goodness and naivety. I loved James for all his heroism and willingness to risk his own life, but he left me wondering what he would become in the future. I even felt empathy and sadness for the "villain". I can hardly wait until I can get my hands on the next book. The book would make an interesting movie that would be enjoyed by people of all ages, just like the book.
It’s not exactly my preference but done well. Has some technical editing issues but nothing horrible. Still deciding if I want to continue the series or not.

A Class Apart started really slowly for me. That, in addition to how it began in the present then went back to lead up to where it started had me wondering when some things would finally click into place. However, once it started to pick up the pace it was well worth the wait at the beginning. There were some definite twists and turns. Up until the last minute I was sure I knew who the bad guys were, and when the truth came out I wasn’t as surprised as I could have been, but it didn’t ruin the story for me. In fact it made the story heartbreaking, but beautiful at the same time.
I like the interactions between Sam and James. They were good kids stuck in a crazy situation, but they didn’t let what was happening to them go to their heads.
The other characters had some very interesting turns as well. I truly hated some characters even more than the actual villains by the end; but mainly because they were truly horrible people in their own right, even though they weren’t actually the bad guys. I wanted to shake one of them so much and I hope that somewhere in the series she gets her just deserts. However at the same time, if I never see her in any of the following books I won’t complain.
I was frustrated by the fact that more of the mystery wasn’t revealed by the end of the story. Yes the ending was a cliff hanger with some VERY ominous undertones, but I think that giving a little more clue about what was truly going on wouldn’t have hurt the story that much. As it is I would gladly read more to find out about who or what James and Samantha really are, as well as whom Lolly is and why she is such a sociopath. I hope the next story comes out soon.
I give this one 4 ½ out of 5 controllers. Only because the beginning felt like I had to push to get through, and I wished there had been a bit more conclusions given out at the end. But I definitely liked it and would recommend reading it. I would even recommend it to younger teen/mid grade readers. While there are some very creepy parts I think that it would definitely be a great book for a new reader as well as more experienced ones. The story has enough going for it that I feel it will keep older readers drawn in as well.
Pros: very interesting characters, good pacing, fair amount of suspense and action, compelling
Cons: story jumps between heads a lot, actions seem sped up at times
For Parents: some violence and deaths, no language or sexual content
The school bus 14 year old twins James and Samantha Blake are on is bombed, while returning from a field trip. The survivors are taken to Brent Valley General Hospital where strange things start happening. The twins discover they have somehow developed super powers and that someone is after them.
Despite the media blackout surrounding the hospital, Jasmin Sharma of 24/7 Interactive News is going for a big story and she doesn't care what laws she has to break or who she has to cozy up to in order to get it.
The twins are interesting protagonists, and Mr. Henning does a good job of showing their good and bad sides (how Sam is bullied but won't fight back, how James is popular but feels like he should do more to protect his less popular sister). Even more interesting - mostly due to her duplitious nature - is Jasmin. She's beautiful, intelligent and ruthless. Minor characters are also fairly well fleshed out, giving the story nice depth.
In many ways this reminded me of the X-Men storyline that introduced Kitty Pride (the Dark Phoenix Saga). The kids doubt their sanity when odd things happen and only slowly realize that they now have special abilities.
The pacing is good, with time for the characters to question what's going on in the hospital and for action packed scenes, making the book hard to put down. The climax itself is pulse pounding if a bit over the top.
While jumping between heads to know what everyone is thinking was common in the past, most writing advice guides now recommend page breaks if you're going to change heads, in order to maintain clarity. I had no problem following the jumps but other readers may find the technique confusing.
There were a few scenes where the action seemed sped up. For example there's a scene where Sam is trying to put out a fire. The implication is that she's trying hard to do this for several minutes, and yet she manages to successfully put it out in the same sentence that explains how hard this is for her.
In the end it was a quick, fun read. And while the book ties up one plot arc, there is definitely more to the story.
A Class Apart (Class Heroes, 1) by Stephen Henning (Goodreads Author)
"Teenage twins James and Samantha Blake are caught up in a seemingly random terrorist bombing while on a school trip.
And was that terrorist incident quite so random after all."
A Class Apart starts out with a bang (pun intended) and just keeps going. The synopsis, in my opinion, provides a good overview of the storyline. This read is nonstop action with a supernatural mystery that begs to be unraveled. James and Sam are very likeable characters and I found myself cheering them on at every turn. There were a couple of times I wanted to yell at James, who made what I thought were immature decisions, but then had to laugh at myself because James is a young man who would make immature decisions at times; thus, in my opinion, boosting the creepy probability level of the novel. As the novel obviously takes place in the UK some of the language is a little different from what I am used to and if you are a dyed in the wool activist against a little difference in terminology, be aware the school buses are at times called coaches and do not give up on the read as it is very entertaining. I am looking forward to the next installment, as this is "Class Heroes 1" I am going out on a limb here and hoping for number two. I was not thrilled with the ending, as I still feel there are many unanswered questions, which is the sole reason for a 4 star rating, but am definitely eager to read book two to find out what comes next.
I received this book from the author with a request for my honest review without any compensation whatsoever, other than the joy of reading a new book.
I was given copy of this eBook free in return for a review.
When I opened myself up for people to request reviews from me I was a little worried I'd get spammed with all sorts of not so well done self published indie books. occasionally I do find myself reading a not so great one but this was one of those books that makes being a reviewer a delight. I totally loved this book from the first word to the last.
The main characters were delightful and I loved the nature of the twins. They felt like they matched their ages well. Sometimes with YA written by adults the kids don't always feel like kids but they really did here. Mature kids but they still came out with the odd teenage phrase that just let you know they were still kids even if they were slightly more sensible than normal kids.
The super power concept is not a new one but still felt fresh while reading this. Some of it was a little predictable but only because it fit within the genre, but it didn't feel like it was trying to be something it wasn't and in this case having what I expected was a good thing.
I also have to admit that I liked reading a book that had settings and places mentioned that I've been to. So many books are published from US writers and they are set in a country I've only spent a short amount of time in so it was refreshing to know what it might have been like when they arrived at the farm in Suffolk, seeing as I grew up right by a farm in Suffolk.
I'm also very impressed with all the extras that have been created around the book and the main characters. These sorts of details show the passion of the writer for their story and I love getting to have these extras that aren't included in the main book because they aren't completely necessary but are there for those of us who want a bit more. Well I definitely want more!
I was sent this book by the author Stephen Henning to read and review.
Book Cover - I liked this book cover except for the part that says "class heroes" I think that really took away from the book cover and should be on the side of the book only so it will be viewed from a bookshelf and only in the case that it would be turned into a series which it has been.* Story - I really enjoyed this story and thought that it had great potential to become a movie. A mishap I found during the story (SPOILER ALERT) is that during all the drama the twin girl Sam's phone gets destroyed and then towards the end of the book Sam & her twin brother James both recieved texts at the same time leaving me going wait her phone was destroyed. That was the only thing I didn't like about the story other than that I loved it * Author - I thought the author was ok. Not my favorite for the fact that in switching back and forth from one scene to another it didn't flow very well and by time you figured out you were in another scene it had already switched back. Character/Relationships - I absolutely loved the twins and their relationship and how they connected with each other. I really felt like I could relate to the thoughts and emotions they had for each other. * Cleanliness - There was some language spread throughout the book.
Overall Review: I enjoyed this book and would actually probably read more about these twins. I really enjoyed their relationship with each other. I felt like in spots this book was really action packed but in other spots I felt like it was more magic than super hero powers I guess in the writing. It was a good easy read that I'm glad I was able to review it.
The cover is absolutely stunning. I love the design of it because it has a sci-fi look to it yet the colors scream "VINTAGE" or old school blue.
At my first glance of the synopsis, I find the story to be really interesting. It was similar to other stories yet it was really different as I started reading the book.
The introduction of the book was pretty normal, high school bullying and a really really mean girl. I felt this was kinda cliche at first but it turns out to be a really explosive story.
As you read, you feel yourself getting pulled into the story. The bomb scene was pretty cool and I liked how Stephen wrote it all.
The main characters of the story (James and Sam) are these really interesting bunch of people. I loved how their relationship as siblings made me feel, "Oh, wow. This is GOOD." in a story.
I loved the way how they function together as a family and seeing their ties getting stronger as the story progressed was really unique.
The one main thing that I really really REALLY loved about the story is THE SUSPENSE. The utterly, exhilarating suspense of who-what-did-it kinda thing. I was constantly wondering who the heck was the bad guy, who the heck was helping them, what was actually real and what was actually a dream. I was CONSTANTLY STRESSED with these questions running through my head and I LOVED IT.
This was a really interactive experience and I truly enjoyed this book.
Some of you might be really surprised with the ending (which I did) but some of you may not. (I guess you're a genius then... which is good!)
Stephen Henning is definitely on my favorite authors list.
"A Class Apart" follows the events occurring after a tragic bus crash in which several students are hurt or dead. After waking up in the hospital, two of the students find themselves suddenly gifted with strange powers, enabling them to do powerful things. The teens struggle to control their powers whilst fighting against an outside force that seems to have taken over the hospital where they are trying to get better. Things peak when the Chief Officer in charge of keeping the accident victims safe suddenly seems to have become brainwashed and starts working against the very people he is supposed to be protecting.
I found this book very interesting. It is a clever mix of mystery and fantasy and the writer does an excellent job of bringing these qualities out. At first it seems as if there is a fight of good versus evil, but the twists in the book soon make you realize that what we may consider evil is not always evil. Though this book seems to have been written for young adults, any reader can enjoy its fast paced action. The vivid descriptions of the writer literally transport you into the world of the 36-floor hospital and you can easily see yourself enjoying it in front of a movie screen. The end left me begging for the next book in the series, with just the right number of questions left unanswered. I highly recommend this book and I can't wait to get my hands on the next one in the series.
This was a fairly interesting YA book featuring the introduction to a set of twins who find they have super-human abilities after nearly dying in an explosion while they are on a school trip. The story itself was pretty interesting and wasn't really predictable, which was actually quite refreshing. I think teens will enjoy the book, especially if they are fans of the super-hero genre.
While the story is fairly strong, there were some areas where the book could have used some cleaning up in the grammar department. There were a few sections where the tense shifted from past to present and back again. There were some rather poorly constructed sentences where it could not be chalked up to dialogue spoken my teenagers. There was one section in particular which was very much disruptive to the flow and went into a lot more detail than necessary about taser weapons. What made it worse was that it was a section where the tense also shifted to present tense. Those two things combined made it painfully out of place. I also found a place where the author wasn't keeping track of things well as a character went from holding a cup of tea to holding a cup of coffee. I can only hope the continuation of the story goes through a bit more stringent editing process to prevent those sorts of very obvious mistakes.
Super powers, twins, & obscurities that goes in the story. I can't pass this up, this is something in my alley. I read the synopsis & it sounds extraordinary. I've always enjoyed super heroes, it reminds me of the X-Men, Avengers, & Teen Titans. A book that I must absorb in. A story that did not waste any time. You follow the twins, James & Sara Blake. They were in a school trip, when their transport was bombed and in the progress hurting a lot of people. The question is who and why? I relish a good mystery some time-to-time, but very keen on paranormal add-on. Two implementation that harmonized together. The vision that is for me to imagine, is well written & well created that it manifest right in front of me. I felt that I was watching a movie. James & Sara Blake are a kick-ass character & I enjoy their company. Even the villains in the story are actually getting in my nerves, meaning it is a well build character to be an antagonist. I love the non-stop action & the adventures that the siblings has gone through. It kept my attention from beginning to end. I am pleased to say that this book is worth reading and delighted to read the next sequel because I can't get enough of James & Sara escapades. Plus, I want to know the reason why the enemies are after the Blake twins.
This book made me smile. I was engaged in the story from the minute I started reading! Class Heroes is clearly a promising series and I will gladly follow the Blake family in their future adventures.
This action packed debut novel begins with twins, James and Samantha, getting caught in a bus explosion, seemingly by accident. They, along with the other children on the bus, are taken to the hospital which begins a whirlwind of strange events. Both Sam and James begin to heal with "super human" speed and soon realize they can do other things as well. As circumstances at the hospital spin out of control it is up to the twins to save the day. But who is the strange girl lurking in the background? And who is really behind this bizarre multitude of happenings? These kids sure have their work cut out for them.
Stephen Henning has created wonderful characters full of whit and charm. His story is detailed and bursting with action. I loved the way you got to experience it from several different sides. A Class Apart was so well written!
I really enjoyed this read and can't wait to get the sequel!
A Class Apart by Stephen Henning Samantha and James Blake, twins, and 28 other students are returning from a school field trip when a bomb detonates inside a wrecked car left on the road. Many students are killed; several are injured. A girl on a nearby rooftop pauses to film the debacle and listen to the screams. She pauses to send a photo on her cell phone, make a call and then tumbles from rooftop to ground like a gymnast and disappears. Both twins survive; as they begin to heal, they begin to feel a bit strange…and they begin to manifest some changes. The others begin to change too…and beware those who come into contact with them. Stephen Henning knows how to write an adventure! This book grabs the reader by the throat and doesn’t let go until way past the very last page. The characters are interesting, the story is fascinating, and the bad guys are annoying and properly evil. Though the bad guys aren’t always bad, some are worse than evil, some are confused, and some remain to be seen. Henning has an extremely hot hit series on his hands. Hang on tight, buckle up, and get in this ride, folks!!
I was pleasantly surprised with this book. I haven't had much luck with young adult paranormal or urban fantasy books lately. This was a quick read, interesting, had some nice twists and turns and a great introduction to a fun series. It follows twins Sam and James after their school bus is targeted by a terrorist and blown up. The kids and their surviving class mates are put in a hospital and strange things happen.
Pros: The book is well written, interesting, original, and the twins are well-written. The powers and abilities that the children display are interesting, and their exploration of what they can do, what helps them and what they want to do with them are realistic. The villain (villainess) is properly creepy and sadistic.
Cons: I didn't see many. Their are a few plot holes, but if you are a teen reader they probably wouldn't be noticed. It is a book for young adults probably 12 to 15.
I'd recommend it to readers of paranormal fantasy or urban fantasy in the lower age ranges as well as those you enjoy YA.
3.5 stars. Interesting characters but 2/3 into it and I still didn't really know what was going on.
Likes: * Closeness of twins, James and Samantha
Dislikes: * Being in the dark and confused is getting old, but I'm hoping for answers * Phillip's parents the Randallsons were awful! * Didn't learn much about the mysterious Lolly or her father * Violence, murder and death were excessive and not necessary, in my opinion
With-reservations: murder, sabotage, kidnapping, mind control, violence, death, sexual innuendos, partial nudity
This book is about two twins which in a bus accident gain super powers. Then they are hospitalised and strange things start happening in the hospital and they have to solve everything. I did like the book. I was sometimes a bit confusing to read the book as loads of things happened, but it was really good. I did like this book as it was a book which included characters with super powers. I do have to say though, I did prefer a bit more the third book, where's lolly?. I read that one before and it was really good. So, I do have to admit I was expecting loads in this book. That expectancy made me not enjoy this book as much as I could have. The thing that I do have to point out is that there were loads of characters and the author managed to make the story have sense. So that was really good, but if I didn't read the book quite often I would forget who was Mrs Stannard or Harden. I hated Mrs Randerson, I think that was what the author was trying to make everyone do, hate her and her husband. So she achieved that perfectly.
I liked this book but it didn’t catch me like other ones, the plot was very well developed, sometimes it got a little slow for my taste but overall it had a good continuity, it had great twists and always kept you entertained. The characters felt very natural and realistic, but for some reason I couldn’t create empathy with Sam and James. I really liked Lolly though :)
A Class Apart was a great book, totally worth my time, but not really the type of books I normally read, think It would suit best for a younger crowd (13-16)
After a vehicle explosion injures and kills fellow pupils on a school coach, twins Samantha and James wake in hospital to find they have developed strange abilities. Erie and suspenseful I found this YA book a good read, I only wish the pace could have been a little faster in this first book of the Class Heroes series.
A gripping YA fantasy fiction story, I was only sorry that things got even more interesting at the end, but fear not there is a sequel which carries on and I dare think might be more exciting than this first book.
