About the author

Gabriel José de la Concordia Garcí­a Márquez was a Colombian novelist, short-story writer, screenwriter and journalist. Garcí­a Márquez, familiarly known as "Gabo" in his native country, was considered one of the most significant authors of the 20th century. In 1982, he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature.

He studied at the University of Bogotá and later worked as a reporter for the Colombian newspaper El Espectador and as a foreign correspondent in Rome, Paris, Barcelona, Caracas, and New York. He wrote many acclaimed non-fiction works and short stories, but is best-known for his novels, such as One Hundred Years of Solitude (1967) and Love in the Time of Cholera (1985). His works have achieved significant critical acclaim and widespread commercial success, most notably for popularizing a literary style labeled as magical realism, which uses magical elements and events in order to explain real experiences. Some of his works are set in a fictional village called Macondo, and most of them express the theme of solitude.

Having previously written shorter fiction and screenplays, García Márquez sequestered himself away in his Mexico City home for an extended period of time to complete his novel Cien años de soledad, or One Hundred Years of Solitude, published in 1967. The author drew international acclaim for the work, which ultimately sold tens of millions of copies worldwide. García Márquez is credited with helping introduce an array of readers to magical realism, a genre that combines more conventional storytelling forms with vivid, layers of fantasy.

Another one of his novels, El amor en los tiempos del cólera (1985), or Love in the Time of Cholera, drew a large global audience as well. The work was partially based on his parents' courtship and was adapted into a 2007 film starring Javier Bardem. García Márquez wrote seven novels during his life, with additional titles that include El general en su laberinto (1989), or The General in His Labyrinth, and Del amor y otros demonios (1994), or Of Love and Other Demons.

Es difícil ser objetivo sobre nuestro escritor favorito; sin embargo, con o sin equivocación, después de leer este volumen que recopila los discursos de Gabriel García Márquez, no puedo más que afirmar: Gabo se encuentra entre los mejores escritores del siglo XX.

El formato cambia, pero en estos discursos aún es posible encontrar la esencia que el colombiano imprimió a cada una de sus novelas, cuentos. Al leer estos textos, uno no puede más que reflexionar, reír o sentirse invadido por una profunda nostalgia ante muchas de las afirmaciones que son ciertas. En ellos, encontramos al hombre sensible, honesto, temeroso de las multitudes pero firme ante los temas que le apasionaban.

El libro contiene citas que son joyas, desde las que se encuentran en su más emblemático discurso, cuando recibió el Nobel de Literatura, hasta aquellas encontradas en el texto en qué Gabo habla de cómo comenzó a escribir hasta la profesión de fe hecha sobre la literatura.

Me resultó conmovedor ver el amor de García Márquez tanto por México como por Colombia, o más bien, por toda América Latina. El discurso sobre su tierra, me resultó particularmente relevante y emotivo, considerando la situación actual de México. En la conclusión de este texto, el autor hace un llamado para amar dicha tierra (Colombia) de tal manera que se convierta en la tierra que nos merezca y merezcamos. Sólo así podrá haber un cambio después de la crisis política y social.

هذا الكتاب رائع، خلاّب، لا يضم خطباً، بل قطعاً أدبية مبهرة، وحكايات بعضها مضحك وبعضها مبكي.
ماركيز يعلمنا دوماً كيف نعيد صياغة رأينا في الأشياء بصورة مختلفة.

Marquez sure knows how to weave words together to form beautiful masterpieces. When we talk about someone being truly gifted, i think Marquez would definitely make it to the list. This book titled 'I'm not here to give a speech' is a compilation of his speeches dispersed over his lifetime.

my rating might seem elevated to some, I'd blame that on my tendentiousness towards beautiful, natural things, especially words that seem to belong together.

সতের বছর বয়সে কলেজের অনুষ্ঠানে ছোট্ট একটি বক্তৃতা দিয়ে শুরু, বার্ধক্যে এসে শেষ। মাঝের প্রায় সাত দশক থেকে বাছাই করা হয়েছে গার্সিয়া মার্কেসের একুশটি ভাষণ। ছোট বড় সব সাইজের বক্তৃতা আছে এখানে, সব রকম ইভেন্ট থেকে নেয়া। সাহিত্যজীবনের শিখর, অর্থাৎ ১৯৮২ সালে স্টকহোমে নোবেল পুরস্কার প্রদান অনুষ্ঠানে পঠিত বিখ্যাত প্রবন্ধ "ল্যাটিন আমেরিকার একাকীত্ব" যেমন আছে, তেমনই আছে বিরানব্বইয়ে হাভানায় একটি অডিটোরিয়াম উদ্বোধন উপলক্ষ্যে দুই পাতার মন্তব্য।

একটা জিনিস গার্সিয়া মার্কেসের নন-ফিকশনের বেলায় কনস্ট্যান্ট - ওর দুর্দান্ত রসবোধ, ওর নিরলস উইট। আশির দশকের গোড়ায় একটা সাপ্তাহিক কলাম লিখতেন - গোটা ল্যাটিন আমেরিকা আর স্পেনে ছড়িয়ে ছিল তার অনুরক্ত পাঠক। গত এক বছর ধরে "এল পাইস" দৈনিকের অনলাইন আর্কাইভ ঘেঁটে ঘেঁটে সেগুলো পড়ছি, কারন দু:খের বিষয় যে আজ অব্দি সেগুলো অন্য কোন ভাষায় অনুবাদের উদ্যোগ নেয়া হয়নি। যাই হোক, সেই পৌনে দুইশ কলামই বলুন বা এই ভাষণগুলো - গার্সিয়া মার্কেসের কন্ঠে উপচে পড়া হিউমারের রিনিঝিনি প্রতিটি লাইনে, ওর চোখে-মুখে হাসির ঝিলিক যেন সদাসর্বদাই দেখতে পান পাঠক।



কলেজে ভর্তি হবার আগে এক মাস বিছানায় শুয়ে শুয়ে জর্জ অরওয়েলের প্রবন্ধ চিঠি আর সাংবাদিকতার সংকলনে ডুবেছিলাম। লেখকের ব্যক্তিত্বের বিশ্বস্ততম বহি:প্রকাশ দেখেছিলাম সেই সংকলনে, আজ এত বছর পর মনে হচ্ছে যে গার্সিয়া মার্কেসের নন-ফিকশনও তেমনই কিছু - লেখকের চরিত্রের শ্রেষ্ঠতম অভিব্যক্তি, তাকে চেনার সেরা উপায়। গাবোর রসবোধ এমনিতেই প্রবাদপ্রতিম - ওর মৃত্যুর পর জন লি এন্ডারসন ঠিক এই বিষয় নিয়েই লিখেছিলেন নিউ ইয়র্কার পত্রিকার পাতায় (বাংলা অনুবাদ এখানে।) তার উপর রয়েছে এক ধরনের বিস্ময়মাখা বিনয় - যেন ত্যাঁদড় স্কুলবালক বিশ্বাসই করতে পারছে না যে এত লোক তাকে চেনে, তার বই পড়ে, তাকে ভালোবাসে, তাকে সম্মান দিতে চায়! দুষ্ট ছেলেটি বুঝতে পারছে ওর আরেকটু সিরিয়াস হওয়া উচিত - কিন্তু বাঁদরামি ছেড়ে দেয়া তার পক্ষে যে ভীষণ কঠিন!

তবে এর মধ্যেও সিরিয়াস কথা আছে। ল্যাটিন আমেরিকার সাহিত্যের দুই কর্ণধার হুলিও কর্তাসার আর আল্ভারো মুতিস-কে স্মরণ করে দুটো লেখা আছে - প্রিয় বন্ধুদের জন্যে সম্মান আর ভালোবাসায় সিক্ত অপূর্ব দুটি প্রবন্ধ। ভেনেজুয়েলা আর মেক্সিকোর প্রতি কৃতজ্ঞতা আছে, ল্যাটিন আমেরিকার চরিত্র বিশ্লেষণ করে প্রবন্ধ আছে একাধিক। গাবো যে প্রথম জীবনে রিপোর্টার ছিলেন সেটা সহজেই বোঝা যায় - কিছু কিছু প্রবন্ধ তথ্য-উপাত্তে ঠাসা, যেমন কোল্ড ওয়ারের সময় পারমানবিক বোমার প্রসারের বিরুদ্ধে একটি অসাধারন লেখা The Cataclysm of Damocles। ক্রোধে ফেটে পড়ছে, তবুও আশার আলো নিভতে দিচ্ছে না। তবে আমার ব্যক্তিগত ফেভারিট এখন পর্যন্ত কবিতার প্রতি গাবোর সশ্রদ্ধ প্রণাম - A Toast to Poetry।

"Poetry, by whose virtue the prodigious inventory of ships enumerated by old Homer in his Iliad are visited by a wind that pushes them to sail with unearthly, dazzling speed. Poetry that sustains, in the slender scaffolding of Dante's tercets, the entire dense, colossal structure of the Middle Ages. Poetry that, with such miraculous totality, rescues our Americas in "The Heights of Macchu Picchu" by Pablo Neruda, the great, the greatest... Poetry, in short, the secret energy of daily life that cooks garbanzos in the kitchen and spreads love like a contagion and repeats images in mirrors... I invite all of you to toast what a great poet of our Americas, Luis Cardoza y Aragon, has defined as the only concrete proof of the existence of man: poetry."


P.S. জীবনে প্রথম কিন্ডলে বই পড়লাম। এবং ডিজিটাল বই নিয়ে যেই শংকা ছিল সেটা সত্যি প্রমাণ হলো - এক জায়গায় লাইন পুরোপুরি বেলাইনে চলে গেছে - মনে হয় কপি-পেস্টে ঘাপলা লেগেছিল কোথাও। কাগজের বই-ই ভালো!

P.P.S. অনুবাদের মান সম্পর্কে অল্প কিছু অভিযোগ আছে - ইডিথ গ্রস্ম্যান এই অনুবাদ করেছেন বলে ঠিক বিশ্বাস হলো না। তার থেকে আরেকটু ভালো আশা করি - যদি আসলেই তিনি হয়ে থাকেন!

Este o carte potrivită pentru a fi citită ori recitită ori de câte ori cineva trebuie să țină un discurs. Și pentru putem împrumuta pentru vorbele noastre în public de la Márquez tonalitatea, construcțiile, umorul, dacă putem.

„Înainte de orice, scuzaţi-mă că vorbesc aşezat, dar adevărul e că, dacă mă ridic, risc să cad în picioare de frică”, a mărturisit, în unul dintre primele sale discursuri publice, laureatul Premiului Nobel pentru Literatură, Gabriel Garcia Marquez, omul care a promis să nu facă în veci două lucruri: „să primesc un premiu şi să ţin un discurs”.

Sunt aici, în carte, 22 de texte pe care Marquez le-a citit public. „Citind aceste discursuri, recunoaşte Marquez, redescopăr că m-am schimbat şi am evoluat ca scriitor”.

Iar noi recunoaștem că, împreună cu toate cărțile lui Márquez citite și recitite, am evoluat ca oameni.

Peste o săptămână, pe 6 martie, se împlinesc 90 de ani de la nașterea scriitorului Gabriel García Márquez.

في مثل هذا الوقت من العام الفائت.. كنت في حالة مزاجية سيئة مستديمة، من أعراض هذه الحالة الجانبية، أنني أصبح لدي: نفور من القراءة.. ليس عدم رغبة فحسب.. بل نفور بحيث أن القراءة صارت بالنسبة إلي فكرة سيئة وسخيفة وعديمة الجدوى
وترتب على هذا أن تركت القراءة، ليس هذا فحسب.. بل أيضًا بمرور الوقت شعرت بهجران كبير بيني وبين القراءة حتى أنني لم أكن أفتح الجودريدز أبدًا وشعرت أنك -أن تمتلك حسابًا على الجودريدز لهي إحدى الحماقات الكبرى التي من الممكن أن ترتكبها في حياتك!

أصبحت أستغرب من وجود أحد لازال لديه الوقت والمقدرة للقراءة، ونسيت حتى شعور المتعة المصاحب للقراءة..

لم أكن لأظن أبدًا أنني سأعود بنفس الشغف للقراءة ورغم أنها أصبحت فكرة سخيفة إلا أن ذلك كان يحزنني جدًا

الآن.. وبعد أن فقدت الأمل في عودتي مرة أخرى للقراءة.. حدث أنني بالفعل عدتُ من جديد للقراءة!

لكن صدق أو لا تصدق.. لم يعجبني في الكتاب إلا هذه المقتطفات فحسب.. حيث كانت هي قمة الروعة والجمال في الكتاب والباقي أقل بكثير.. لذلك عرفت تمامًا ما ينبغي علي فعله، قمت بتجاوز الفصول التي لا تعجبني.. واستزدت فقط من المقتطفات التي أعجبتني من قبل..

صدق أولا تصدق أيضًا.. المقاطع التي أعجبتني من ست سنوات هي ذاتها التي لازالت تفتنني اليوم.. رغم تغير كل الأشياء في عيني وتبدل حقيقة الأشياء في نظري، وضبابية الرؤية وظهور الأبعاد الأخرى وانتشار الآيس تي وسلطة الكولِ سلو التي لا تعرفها هل هي مسكرة أم حادقة أم حرشة أم ايه حكايتها؟

These 21 speeches are a testament to the wit, humor, and imaginative story-telling power of Gabriel Garcí­a Márquez, as well as to his inexhaustible dedication to the crafts of writing and journalism (or, as he would simply call them: poetry). The speeches span a wide range of occasions, from grand ones like his Nobel Prize acceptable speech, to more obscure talks held at gatherings of mutually interested friends around Latin America. Diffused among them all are concern with the state and fate of humanity, encouragement of creative self-expression, love of friends and friendship as well as engagement in healthy rivalry, and - perhaps most of all - the importance of poetry not only as a way of life, but as an expression of life itself. At times Gabo slips into a touching optimism, set against the darkness of civil wars and violence in the continent he loves so much and the threat of global wars:

...Then a sudden strong wind from no one knows where began to break apart that colossus with feet of clay, making us understand that we had been on the wrong road for who knows how long. But, contrary to how it might appear, this is not the prelude to turmoil but just the opposite: the long dawning of a world presided over by the total liberation of thought, so that no one is ruled by anyone other than his or her own mind.

In these times of strife and fear we may not be able to accept this vision so readily, as much as we may desire a unified and liberated world. But, while reading Gabo's speeches and hearing his impassioned voice in your mind, you are inclined to believe him.

This book is a collection of speech scripts that Gabriel Garcia Marquez wrote throughout his life. The scripts are all short yet dense and full of color and meaning. I didn't expect to enjoy a collection of short discourses this much.
By reading this book, I learned the power of words, imagination and culture. These can change one's life and the course of a society's destiny. They are, in short, all that matter.

I'm Not Here to Give a Speech is a short collection of Gabriel García Márquez’s speeches. Márquez is the Nobel Prize-winning author of masterpieces, One Hundred Years of Solitude (1967) and Love in the Time of Cholera (1985).

In his speeches Márquez discourses on the “tragedy” of Latin America, whose wars, military coups and thwarted political idealism make it the “immense homeland of deluded men”. Márquez spoke from experience. His father, Gabriel Eligio García, had worked in Colombia in the 1920s for the United Fruit Company, which succeeded in reducing Honduras to such a state of corruption that it earned the original title of “banana republic”.

Much of what Márquez says, in speeches delivered between 1944 and 2007 are truly beautiful and haunting. Thank you, Netgalley & Knopf Doubleday Publishing, for this copy in exchange for an honest review. 3.5 out of 5

سبق أن قلت أني أحب ماركيز المكافح وكاتب المقالات أكثر من ماركيز الروائي، وأحب ماركيز ناقل القصة(مهمة سرية في تشيلي كمثال) أكثر من ماركيز الذي يبتدعها، لم يتغير شيء ولكني أضيف أن (غابو) الذي يلقي الخطابات رائع جدا ومن نافلة القول (في رأيي) أن نقول أنه أيضاً يتفوق على غابو الروائي

من أجمل اللحظات التي يمكن قضاؤها برفقة كتاب، قضيتها مع هذا العمل الماركيزي بامتياز .. وحقاً ينتابني التساؤل : ما نفع حفلات التوقيع والأتوجرافات وما جانسها إن كان باستطاعة الكاتب تقديم ذروة فكره وروحه لقرائه بهذا القدر من العفوية والجمال.. هذه الألفة بين كاتب وقارئه حيث يجمعهما النص لا تقدر بثمن ولا يعادلها موجود أبداً في الوجود..إنها فكرة من القوة بحيث لا ينفيها حتى قصور وعينا عنها ..

في أحيانٍ كثيرة ضحكت، وفي أخرى ابتسمت، كد�� أدمع من فرط الجمال تارة ومن غصة الألم تارة أخرى .. عرفت هنا ماركيز آخر، ذلك الجالس خلف آلة الكتابة خرج عن ظله وظهر كاملاً بسخريته وتلقائيته وجذور أفكاره المزهرة في ما قرأت له من قبل ..

هذا الكتاب نوع من إثبات وجود لشيء يصعب التصديق بوجوده ، حالة غريبة لا تستطيع أمامها سوى الانخراط بكليتك المهزومة لسحرها الأخاذ ، عشتها بكم من مشاعر متناحرة أو ربما متوائمة لم أعرفه من قبل سوى في كتابات غسان ..

بهذه الكلمات نصف الخطابية بدأت يومي ، وأكاد أنهيه مع موت سرير رقم 12 .. ولا فكرة لدي عن القدر الذي جمع هذين الجميلين في حقيبتي لهذا اليوم، لكني أكيدة أنه لم يكن ليكون أجمل منهما أو من الوقت بصحبتهما، وأتسائل من الآن عن الكتاب الذي سيحل محله في الغد !! ..

مثل حال خود ماركز بعد از خواندن مجموعه داستان "حيوانات نامرئي" خوليو كور تازار، از همان صفحه اول متوجه شدم نويسنده اي است كه خودم در بزرگي دلم مي خواست آن طور باشم.

Me ha encantado leer este compendio de discursos del autor, pude conocer más al ser humano; sencillo, apegado a su familia y a sus amigos, preocupado por el medio ambiente, por América Latina, por su Colombia.
“Los lectores de Cien años de soledad son una comunidad que, si viviera en un mismo pedazo de tierra, sería uno de los veinte países más poblados del mundo. No se trata de una afirmación jactanciosa. Al contrario. Quiero apenas mostrar que ahí está una cantidad de seres humanos que han demostrado con su hábito de lectura que tienen un alma abierta para ser llenada con mensajes en castellano. El desafío es para todos los escritores, todos los poetas, narradores y educadores de nuestra lengua, para alimentar esa sed y multiplicar esta muchedumbre, verdadera razón de ser de nuestro oficio y por supuesto de nosotros mismos.”

Initially found it difficult to read this book without context as it was filled with speeches he had given over the course of his life. However with the help of ChatGPT I got to read a bit more about each speech, where it was given, the key points and what he was trying convey through the speech I enjoyed the book more. The key themes of his books or atleast this one was the power of storytelling, friendships and acquaintances and his strong ties to his roots no matter how far away from home he was. One of my favourite speeches out of the 21 in the book was how he began to write, where he tells a story about a woman who basically manifests and inkling. It was also nice to see his speeches evolve yet maintain the same emotion and passion he had for things that for the important to him from one of his first speeches at his high school to his last ones. This book has encouraged to me to read other books of his. I wanted to get ‘Hundred years of solitude’ but it wasn’t available so I got his next most popular book, ‘Love at the time of Cholera’. Stay tuned.

لماذا أشعر أن جابرييل جرثيا دى ماركيز هو ومايكتبه كتلة واحدة؟لماذا أجده في كل الأوقات هو نفس أبطال رواياته وأحداثها وكلمات خطبه وروح مقالاته؟...لقد قرأت له قصصه القصيرة ومائة عام وكيف تكتب الرواية وماجئت لإلقاء خطبة وهي كلها هو..فإيمانه بأمريكا اللاتينية لا يهتز..ورؤيته لما يحدث على الصعيد العالمي ثاقبة جدا وتنضح بالحقيقة وأفكار خطبه ومقالاته ونصوصه كلها مبتكرة ومختلفة وناضحة بالإبداع والإيمان...الإيمان باتساقه مع نفسه ومع فكره ومشاعره ووطنه وإبداعه وماضيه وحاضره وغده... كلما قرأت له زدت احتراماً لشخصه وتقديراً ..ولولا ترجمة هذا الكتاب التي تعثرت كثيراً لاكتملت سعادتي به

When I look at the first page on wich I wrote the date I bought this book - 15 months ago - I get emotional, thinking how much has passed since then and that I only read it now...thinking how it stood on my shelf among other books. Shame on me for reading it in 31 days.

Besides his most famous speech, The Solitude of Latin America I really enjoyed The Doom of Damocles - it really is something special about it, it's written in a different style than the others, almost like a tale -, Bottle to the sea for the God of the words, Illusions for the 21th century

الكتاب عبارة عن تجميع لخطب ألقاها ماركيز في مناسبات متفرقة.
ممتع جداً.
أحببت خطبة جائزة نوبل و خطبة رثاء خوليو كورتاثر و خطبة تهنئة صديقه بإتمام عامه السبعين.
تشعر في بعض الخطب أنه حكاء في شوارع ألف ليلة و ليلة .

الترجمة أبضاً رائعة لأحمد عبد اللطيف.

This is a collection of speeches written by Garcia Marquez and they reveal much of his style as an author. Although several are memorable and worth reading, the one titled "The Cataclysm of Damocles" is worth reading and remembering and would further any discussion on the true benefits of peace.
