Natural born wiccan Elizabeth Xavier likes her life just the way it is. She has a beautiful lake house. Power to rival just about anyone. And seven men that cater to her every desire.
What she didn't expect was to be asked to perform a binding ceremony in the local were-bear den and tie herself forever to a were-bear as a permanent guard. She didn't like anyone telling her what to do, and giving a man a supernatural tie to her life meant he'd probably want to boss her around, too. Or tell her she couldn't enjoy her casual relationships with the other men in her life. Guilt is a strong motivator, as is the reminder that she was abducted several months earlier, so she goes into the den with the intention of securing a guard and keeping him at arms' length. Too bad no one told her that were-bears don't like to be kept at arms' length.
When Elizabeth realizes that more than just her personal protection is up for grabs from the bear she binds herself to, can she go through with it, even if it means losing everything she enjoyed about her life? Will she go back on her word and destroy the alliance between the two groups, or does happiness lay in the underground den in the arms of a were-bear? When more than just the alliance and her own personal protection is on the line, Elizabeth has to make a decision fast. The decision to take a guard has never been so important. * * * * *
A Curve of Claw contains a feisty play-girl witch with a sarcastic attitude, some red-hot were-bear loving of the menage variety, jealous lovers, claws and fangs galore, and some roadside nookie hot enough to melt the tires from the truck.
Note: This a book for mature audiences only, and contains sexually explicit content including M/F/M interaction.

Wow! I loved this story. Ok, so it is a freebie with horrible cover art, but please don't let that discourage you from reading it. The story revolved around Elizabeth, a natural born witch, that came into a lot of power on her 18th birthday.
Her coven is allied with personal guards: were-falcons, were-tigers, were-bears, were-serpents, and were-wolves. So there is plenty of hot man meat for Elizabeth to enjoy. She also supplies blood to the master vampire. Well Elizabeth's life is turned upside down when she is faced with taking on a private guard which may interfere with her carefree lifestyle. A jealous, hot bear shifter, guard that is.
I refuse to give anymore of the plot away considering this is a short story. But if you like and paranormal erotica, weres, vampires and alpha men then I highly recommend this fun story. I truly look forward to more from R.E. Butler!!! This was longer than a novella at 213 pages and it had plenty of meat on it's bones.
Although I have rated this book as OK, which is two stars in my book, it was a huge disappointment to me. It came nowhere near to my expectations of a great story wrapped around oodles of shifter(mainly bear)/human (mainly witch) sex.
There was a fairly good story, but very long and drawn out, but a lot was lacking.
For a start, the heroine of the piece, Elizabeth, is supposed to be a very powerful, "natural" witch. In the whole book, she only casts two spells! One of those is to "collar" her were-bear husband. The other! Well, I won't say because it comes near the end of the book and would be a spoiler, but I can tell you that it is very undramatic.
The first quarter of the book is devoted to describing the aging of witches at one witch year to every twelve human years, and the politics and relationships between the covens and the various were packs, their leaders, and who has mated with whom. YAWN!
Then there came an expression which irritated me, right in the middle of some flowing narrative. "Go figure." That could only happen in American English!
Later, I came across, "He growled into my office." Huh! What's that about.
OK. There was some good m-f-m sex buried in there somewhere, but the rest of the sex scenes and the vampire feeding on witch scene (singular) were all pretty tame.
The biggest disappointment of all, for me, was that there was absolutely NO shifter(mainly bear)/human (mainly witch) sex at all!!! In fact, there was very little shifting. It might as well have been all in human form with interactions between a variety of human sects and cults.
I would not love to read a great book involving a bear shifter and a human or witch. Can anyone point me to such a book?
My first book by this author but it’s been on my kindle ages so high time I read it. Now if honest I’d got this because Amazon kept recommending this author but I’m not particularly a ménage reader although hopefully I’m no prude . It’s obviously the beginning of a series so introducing the world of these shifters but here we do get various paranormals introduced. Ok star of the story is Elizabeth a witch with appetites but she has to settle down. Now into this comes the knowledge that perhaps Elizabeth is happy with her lifestyle and hadn’t realised that the alliances she had taken for granted might be threatened. Now what could threaten everything ? Well Elizabeth getting mated to two wearbear brothers ! They may be twins but luckily they are different with one being more of a computer geek and the other preferring to work in construction but Elizabeth has to leave her play girl ways behind if she wants happiness that’s everlasting with her two hunky bears . Hmm not really that exciting if I’m brutal. I think I prefer more world building, more plot and less sex as filler. Plus I’m not sure if I’m really comfortable with the idea of twins but perhaps that’s a personal foible. I’m sure if you fancy something quick and hot to read then this will satisfy that craving.
I suppose my dislike of this book might just be a matter of taste. I dislike slut shaming and you would think that the fact that this MC was sleeping with 7 men and standing up for her right do so would be a good thing, but it wasn't. It rubbed me wrong for a couple reasons. First, they were the 7 most powerful men in the area, all fighting for her attention (the old she's so special for some unknown reason trope). Second, they bought her expensive gifts, like cars, and sent her the clothing they wanted her to wear on their 'dates.' By 25% I'd decided she read like a high class prostitute instead of a sexually liberated woman, like she was the cliche sexually available woman who therefore must be available to all powerful men. Third, she'd described as 18+3, so basically 18 (this is stressed that she's 18), making her a sexually promiscuous girl instead of woman. Fourth, the antagonist of the story is one of her jilted lovers and it's suggested that her sexual activity was to blame for the coven's problems (basically shaming her past activities). All this countered by five, after one good f_ck she settles down into marital bliss and it's ever so much better than playing the field. So the whole story is basically framed around how much better being in a committed relationship is than not. Maybe not slut shaming, but at the least admonishing. Then we have the oddity of it being stressed that bears DO NOT SHARE, therefore her sexual behavior would have to stop when she mated. Then she mated two bears who SHARE her. The MC's personality is only as deep as her bed sheets and the mates have none at all.
Never judge a book by its cover. This isn't the best cover I've ever seen and I was hesitant to read this one... but I liked the excerpt for it so I decided to give it a chance since I got it on one of the free days. Let me just say I loved this book! I've always dug romance books that have menage (two men and one woman) and this one does not disappoint.
I enjoyed the heroine but I enjoyed her two mates more :) I definitely will be following/stalking this author in the future and seeing what other books I can find because I loved it :) <3
I have a tendency to get a wee bit... frustrated when characters in books aren't told pivotal pieces of information. Let's say, for example, that the ceremony one of them is about to take part in -- and has been pressured into from both her wiccan grandmother and the leaders of the bear clan -- is really a mating ceremony. This sort of secret keeping sort of sours any good feelings I might have had. Admittedly, this is something that bothers me a lot more than other readers. And I'm okay with that. The point I'm trying to make is that there were some big things that weren't divulged and while part of me wants to excuse it and say that it was a misunderstanding on everyone's part (Bear leader guy did lay out *what* the ceremony entailed physically, he just skipped over the fact that it was a true mating ceremony), part of me is all "Umm, no. Just no. On so many levels."
I guess I'm trying to say that this book didn't hit my sweet spot. I am not a fan of secrets and/or information being withheld in this manner. And this book had a big one.
The thing I loved about this book is the fresh take on Wicca/Witches and Shapeshifters. It made a refreshing change to read something new rather than a different take on the same old.
This book is for the over 18s as it is quite detailed! and involves a menage a trois with twin were-bears.
There were bits about this book that felt rushed but that can be quite normal when a series starts, otherwise you would have the whole book explaining the why and wherefores without any story.
Really enjoyed this book and I now have the second - "A Flash of Fang" - which I'm looking forward to reading. I hope to see more of the characters in this book and learn more about their world.
Ok It was good; however, I have to admit that being mated to twin brothers just creeped me out. They couldnt be cousins 4 times removed or something. lol During the erotic parts I had to makes them not related in my head.
Book Overview: Natural born wicca Elizabeth likes her carefree life just the way it is, filled with seven Equally gorgeous Guards that cater to her every desire sexual or otherwise (even if they don't like sharing). But what she didn't expect was to be guilted into a binding ceremony in the local were-bear den and tie herself forever to a were-bear as a permanent guard (& more) to help form an allience between the were-bear den & her coven. So the big question is will she give up the partying & carefree sex? Or will she turn her on the alliance for her own desires, well you'll just have to read find out!
3.5 A curve of claw was everything I thought I would be, sexy, fun & just an all round good read. I was tempted tho to give it 3 stars purely because It took me half of the book to get really into, I must admit that's slightly my own fault tho because I am in love with the authors over series The Wolfs Mate which had my drooling for from the start. So that aside the chracters where interesting & well developed for a novella (a fairly decent size Novella) & as always with Butler the writing was second to none with no annoying grammer! Defiantly recommend it & it being a freebie is just an added bonus!

A captivatingly written tale which keeps the reader’s interest all the way through, and smoothly encourages readers to read the next novel in the series as well. Easy suspension of disbelief means that all seems natural and realistic, including the generational witches, were-tigers, were-wolves, were-serpents, were-bears, were-falcons, and vampires. It even makes sense in the context of this story that this young (18 for the third year) natural witch is so promiscuous (and, I might add, a good bit arrogant too). What I liked best about this book, I think, is that the author doesn’t limit herself or the reader to just one type of Supernatural species or occurrence. We have here a powerful coven of witches, we have generational witchcraft (inherited), we have were-bears, were-wolves, we have vampires; we have grandmother-granddaughter mentoring and occasional conflict; male-female jealousy; male-male competitiveness; all sorts of fun activities. There is NOTHING boring about this novel! It really reads smoothly and quickly. I’ve really enjoyed this novel.
Elizabeth, at 18 “for the third year,” is a powerful “natural” witch (she inherited from her mother, who refused Power, and has been mentored by her grandmother). As South Corner of her Coven, she is very sensual, and has seven different males from the were-clans and from the vampire clan with whom she consorts. Also, she seems to prefer the higher ranks when possible. When she discovers she is asked to “collar” a were-bear, and that this includes mating, not just intimacy, she naturally freaks out. Neither she nor her seven “friends” will appreciate this-but will she go ahead for the good of the Coven, or will she back down?
Elizabeth is a natural born wicca whose life has just been turned upside down… she’s been told to collar a bear for the good of supernatural relations and she gets not one but two sexy bears in this charming and passionate paranormal romance.
This fast paced and smooth flowing plot enthralls reader with lots of passion and suspense. The well written words and details bring the story to life and capture the imagination and the characters are strong compelling and grab the reader’s attention and the world the author has created bewitches the reader into wanting to know more.
Elizabeth is a very passionate woman and she loves having seven men cater to her every desire but her position as the south corner of her wiccan coven is about to change all that. For the good of the bear clan and the coven she’s been asked to collar a guard, she assumes that she can continue the things are but that’s not the case and the reader can’t help but get caught up in the story as Elizabeth’s true passions are revealed to the reader – and to her.
While this story is short, it has lots of captivating characters and a fascinating world and I found it to be enjoyable and entertaining with lots of hot and steamy sex scenes including menage scenes and I can’t wait to read the next one.
This was a great read and something totally different from my usual reads..really enjoyed it very well written ..will definitely continue with the series:) Elizabeth was such a diva when it came to men...many men come to that!!..Girl just didnt want to commit..but when she met her protectors Ash and Axe both brothers as her mating call to bears she couldnt residt falling in love because she did feel loved snd protected and not used as that I think was the case for the other seven men she had.Ash snd Axe made her feel special.and her heart just felt a connection with them.A besutiful love story loved it :)
" A Witch is Spelled by twin sexy Bears oh yeah :) " This book is Fantastic! R.e Butler never ceases to amaze me :) . This book is amazing with enchanting characters. The story line is brilliant!. I love when a book has suspense, action, Romance, and super sexy male shifters in them lol . The sex scenes are a plus but even with out them this book would be fantastic! . The witch in this book is one lucky gal lol. She gets a set of sweet protective, sexy loving twin Bear shifters! . As with all the books I have read by R.e Butler I am never disappointed! .
Did not finish after only 2 pages. I hate when an author tries to explain the slow aging process and gives details that immediately don't make sense. Discontinuity is a major problem for me.
If a witch ages 12 years for every one human year after age 18 it make NO SENSE mathematically for the narrator to state that a someone (shifter?) who looks 25 could be "a few hundred years old". The most someone who looks 25 would be around 100. 500/12 = 41 so that person a few hundred yrs old would look AT LEAST 40!
Also, I really didn't feel like reading about an 18 yr old slut today:).
3.5 stars .. I really liked it. Witches, were's and vampires Really didn't like the main character at first. she was far too full of herself. And I couldn't wait for her to fall on her ass !! Her two protectors soon put her in her place. It was funny in places. And very intense. Never too sure about brothers sharing the same woman, but it worked out well. Will continue to read the series.
It's been over a year since I read this book so I'll be updating this review at some point after I reread the book. Yes I remember liking it well enough that I'll be reading it again at some point.
I do remember being a bit irritated with Elizabeth's behavior at the beginning of the book, however I also remember that I liked the guys a lot and they were the first bear shifters I read about so that was a plus also.
short, sweet in the end, but the heroine had a bit of an over-inflated ego, it was a little tough to chew in the beginning, but she ended up all right. I struggle with these harem type books as yeah it sounds great for a minute, but if it was the other way around and I was the one fighting for someone's attentions, I would hate it, so golden rule and all, I seem to never truly enjoy books like this for what they are. haha
This is book 1 in the Wiccan-Were-Bear series. It's the story of play girl Elizabeth who is told she has to collar a bear to keep the Alliance between her Coven and the shifters. She has to give up 5 shifters and 2 vampires to take on a Were-Bear husband. What she finds are twins. Hot, sexy protective twins that mate her. This is the first book I've ever read from this author. I really like the style. I'm getting the rest of the books tonight to read this week.
I loved this book it was a great read really fun. Elizabeth was a complete slut I have no eda why she won't admit it to herself but let's face it she was. But in the end she got luchky with two really hot guys. This one is so worth reading
(4.5) This is like the billionth time I have reread this book, and I still really love it. Even though it is very short, less than a hundred pages, I still enjoy it. I always notice something new each time that I reread it. Now this book is definitely an adult book because there are many, many graphic sexual scenes, so if you are not comfortable with that sort of thing, I do not recommend checking this out, but I think you should give it a go if you're cool with that sort of thing. I could just keep rereading this story over and over and never get tired of it (I used to read this book once a day - I was completely obsessed with it when I originally read it), and I just am so in love with this book and this series.
The character growth in this novella is kind of extraordinary. From our main character, Elizabeth, completely turning around her ways (she used to sleep around with like seven different men as well as let two vampires feed off of her until she became mated to some very sexy werebears) to becoming a super likable character who truly does care for those around her. She just became a really great character to me because I was not the biggest fan of hers in the beginning, but her character growth just made me like her character. She is snarky, sassy, and super loving to those close to her, and that is just something people to need see more of in the literary world. We need to see a strong, female character able to stand up for herself, but also be able to lean on those she loves. Oh, and did I mention she is a Wiccan?
Oh, sweet Jesus we have to talk about Ash and Axe. They are hands-down the sexiest characters I have ever read about (and that definitely says something because I have read a lot of books with lots of sexy characters). But it isn't just their appearances that makes them sexy (the descriptions of these characters make me start to drool, no joke), but they are sexy because they are so possessive (in the best possible way) and so dominant (in the fabulously great way), and they also just love Elizabeth so damn much. You can just feel their love for her in this book, and it kind of takes my breath away. I just love these two men that it is kind of hard to describe.
Also, I just am so in love with every single character in the book. But you remember me saying that Elizabeth is a Wiccan? Yeah, she is a witch/Wiccan, and that just was another part of the story that I really loved. Surprisingly, I haven't read another book featuring a Wiccan character. It was so interesting because that is a big part of this book. It isn't something that is just brushed over or anything. That is a huge part of Elizabeth's character, and it was nice to see that so prominent in this novella.
And you did hear me right earlier. I said werebears. This is another first for me, which is also very surprisingly because I used to be super into the paranormal genre. But people most just write about werewolves in that genre, so I never came across this in all the books that I read. I honestly was not sure if I was going to end up liking the werebear aspect of the book, but I did really enjoy that. I think it was a super integral part of the story, and it was really interesting. It was another aspect that I just loved.
I also really loved the writing. I am coming to understand that I usually prefer simplistic writing styles as opposed to very poetic and lyrical writing styles (I really don't have the patience for that, honestly). R. E. Butler just has this way with words that explains everything so perfectly without info-dumping or having paragraphs of just nothing but description (see: lyrical writing styles). I was able to get a great scope of the characters and the setting, which I really enjoyed. Her writing style is really what helped me to fly through this novella so quickly, and it definitely added to my enjoyment of the novella.
Overall, I really enjoyed the plot, the characters, and the author's fantastic writing style. I am so excited to read more from her (I have read one other novella by her, and it was just as fantastic as this one), and I definitely recommend you check out her other work! Her books are just so fantastic.
Honestly, I thought the idea of this story was very interesting. Though after I started reading, I think that I would have preferred reading a story where the FMC was juggling multiple guys instead of what we got. I also wasn't a big fan of the way they track age in this story. For wiccans/shifters once they hit 18 their aging begins to slow down so they age one year every twelve years that pass. Which is fine, but then they do weird math like "I'm 18 plus 3" to indicate that she's 18 years old, but has "been" 18 for 3 years. I don't get why the author didn't just keep it simple and say they had longer life spans and aging slowed to a crawl.
This story really could have stood to be longer. The premise is interesting, though there are a lot of things that are just unexplained. The FMC is pressured into performing a ritual that will bind her to a werebear forever, but nobody ever properly explains what this ritual is to her until the absolute last moment and the motivations behind doing it make little sense.
Apparently, the bear clan wants her to do this because having one of their members mated to a wiccan will make other women want to visit the clan? It brings up the esteem of the clan I guess. Her grandmother pressures her into doing this because she wants to keep the alliance with the bear clan, but apparently her grandmother never considers that maybe the other 6 guys that the FMC is sleeping with would take issue with this and that they could lose other alliances? The FMC doesn't consider this until she's already mated to them.
Why was this even something that her grandmother cared enough about to force her 18-year-old granddaughter into what is essentially marriage? They made it seem like the FMC needed to be tamed and to settle down... because yeah 21-year-olds whose lifespans seem to be at least several hundred years really need to settle down.
The writing wasn't horrible, though it did feel rushed, the story could have been fleshed out more. I probably won't continue with the series, but if you go in not expecting much this story was actually not a bad quick read.
2.5 stars. Not the best start for this series, later books are better. Whilst I really enjoyed this different theme of story I wasn’t keen on Elizabeth and her morals, or lack thereof. Didn’t find her particularly exciting as a witch, she thought too much of her powers, or found her that likeable due to her attitude about honouring the binding ceremony agreement. Agrees to tie herself to a bear shifter but plans to keep ALL her other men going too. Found it funny Elizabeth ended up being bonded to two hot, jealous, bear shifters. Did like the bear enclave and Ash and Axe deserved better than a mate who didn’t want them except for sex. I will admit it was a fair time before I picked up book two for this series. Later books in this series are better. I have owned this book for many years and have read and reviewed it a long time ago but reviews submitted from the back of books seem to be missing.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️.5 - I LOVE THIS AUTHOR!! What an addictive and spicy start to the series! Elizabeth is such a boss—powerful, confident, and totally unbothered by expectations until fate throws her into a whirlwind with Ash and Axe. Their chemistry? Off. The. Charts. I loved how the story played with ideas of freedom versus connection and how Elizabeth slowly let herself be vulnerable without losing her edge. Also, can we talk about the sizzling scenes? The forest rendezvous?? Phew! I was 100% here for the were-bear heat, the sass, the power dynamics—it all worked so well. This book kicks off the series with claws out and hearts on the line.
A true born Wiccan, Elizabeth is happy with her life. She is bound to no one but herself. Being necessary for the rituals to keep peace amount the shifters she has bodyguards. Several of those guards are her lovers. As well as two vampires and a falcon. But a time has come for Elizabeth to bind herself to one to keep her truly safe. And the bears had won that right. It is a diplomatic thing and she believes that even once it is done, her life will remain her own. Surprise, surprise!!! Not only does the spirits bind her to the bear clan but to twin bears. Oh me Oh my. Talk about adjustments.
This story was....meh. That's about the best I can say. The heroine is young so there can be some leeway given to her maturity. There were several areas and details that made me think this was not book 1 in the series, comments of a continuation. I liked the character pairing with the Bear twins and the dynamic they have as a 3 way relationship, but I still have too many unanswered questions. At 91 pages I just didn't get enough to feel satisfied.
I loved this book! It was such a great story. This was a lot different compared to the other books I’ve read. This one focuses more on the story and not the smut. It was such a refreshing sight to behold! If you’re in the mood for a quick supernatural romance and you don’t mind the MFM relationships, then this book is for you! The world in which this story opens up will keep you coming back for more!
Not going to lie I didn’t know if I was going to like the book by the description but I needed something more!!! She’s promiscuous and isn’t ashamed she thinks she’ll be able to Continue after the collaring not knowing what it truly means and she’s collared to not one but two bears... this hot mfm is delicious..
I absolutely loved the main character, the Wiccan Elizabeth! Loved her own description of herself as a playgirl, where smaller minded people called her a whore. Playboy playgirl, stud whore, it's a matter of gender discrimination and always at the expense of females. C'est la vie!
