Has anyone ever asked you—What were the best days of your life?
That one period of your life you always wanted to go back to? And live that life . . . one more time?
When asked this, I closed my eyes and went back in my own past. And I thought . . .
. . . of the days, when life's most complex choices had a simple solution of Akkad Bakkad Bambey Bo! . . . of the seasons when rains were celebrated by making paper boats. . . . of the times when waiting at the railway crossing meant counting the bogies of the train passing by.
When I opened my eyes, it seems Like it Happened Yesterday! Like it was yesterday that I broke my first tooth and fell in love for the first time. Like it was yesterday, when I was about to lose my friend, and suddenly he became my best friend.
I look back and it becomes a journey full of adventure. It makes me laugh, it makes me cry and I know I’m here because I was . . .
Come, hold my hand, and take this trip with me. It will be yesterday for you, once again!
Note: This book is in the Hindi language and has been made available for the Kindle, Kindle Fire HD, Kindle Paperwhite, iPhone and iPad, and for iOS, Windows Phone and Android devices.
Ravinder Singh is a software engineer who works with a prominent IT company in India.
He was brought up in a very small town of Orissa called Burla. After spending most of his life there, he has recently moved to Chandigarh. Owing to the Nature of his work, he has visited various parts of the world and he wishes to continue doing the same in future. Apart from reading and writing, The Author has a keen interest in working out in the gym. Occasionally, he loves playing snooker; his favorite game. He is crazy about Punjabi Music and loves dancing to its beats. I Too Had A Love Story.. is his debut novel.
The first thing I felt while and after reading this book:
I wish if it had never happened, I mean the book – Like it Happened Yesterday.
‘I TOO HAD A LOVE STORY’ was Spontaneous and Sincere, ‘CAN LOVE HAPPEN TWICE?’ was Deliberate and (overly) Dramatic, and here comes the worst – ‘LIKE IT HAPPENED YESTERDAY’, a Forced and Failed attempt.
It seems somebody has made Ravinder Singh to write this book on the gunpoint.
Narration falls flat though it is something that I’d expected from him considering his previous works). The plot…sorry there isn’t any. There is no connection between the consecutive chapters. It seems even author was confused what he was writing and what message he wanted to convey. He’d just picked some episodes from his or others’ childhood which he could remember and penned them down in worst possible English for the sake of writing a novel. The so-called novel is nothing more than a collection of low-grade short stories.
To be honest, I was never Ravinder Singh's fan. I liked only a final few pages of his first book- ITHALS. Over all, that book was a decent first attempt, with no much competition from other books. His second book was a big let down.
Today, he is one of the most celebrated Romance-Fiction writers of India, and I, a naive author, look up to him Somehow, there was an eagerness within me too see how Ravin will bounce back, considering his anthology was not appreciated either! That's why I thought of reading his 3rd novel (4th book) - Like It Happened Yesterday.
But LIHY fails miserably. The book which could have been a fun ride, considering it takes us to our childhood, totally failed to bring any smile on my face (Apart from that one dialogue in Chapter 10). The scenes are very ordinary, and most of the chapters drag (even though they are short). It is sad to see top Publisher like Penguin publishing such book with no substance at all.
I hope Ravin will definitely bounce back with his next book, to prove his celebrity-author status.
The title is completely appropriate for the book as all the memories that Ravinder Singh shared with us are the memories that are unforgettable and we will remember these memories till the very last breath.
The author shared with us how he made his friends in schools, how he participated in the rat race, and how he shared a quality time with his classmate.
The book is about the school life of the author.
His best friend in guru Nanak public school was Sushil till class X and in class XI and XII his best friend was Nitin.
Author was the cherry of his parents’ eyes.
A must read account of Ravinder Singh and best one read so far by me.
I was travelling while i chose this book to read and i forced myself to read till the end and compelled to hv passed my time in the train. The writer has lowered down the expectations and his own level which was developed via his first book. A dissapointment and unrecommended, Indeed!
A third book from the author and a very highly anticipated one. He's a celebrated author after all. A lot has been said in the first two novels about love and its loss and then loving again.
But this time its completely different. It's a journey into his past. It's a journey into our childhood memories.
It's a sweet and a pleasant story narrated by him. Ur mind gets refreshed by reading it as u can relate urself with the situations that we might have found ourselves in our young times.
It's smooth like a well oiled machine and u'll be through with it in no time.
Its a simple story and anybody who is interested in reliving their childhood can join Ravinder Singh in his journey. :)
A good book, perhaps could have been a lot better, if more emphasis is placed on childhood and teenage memories rather than spending too much time on Puberty and sexual attractions. But I Love end, it is motivating and refreshing. Overall not a bad read..
After reading two books on Ravinder’s love life, I was expecting this one to be a love story too. I thought maybe this will be a school love story and every second I would be expecting him to be falling in love. But that’s not what this book is about; this is a story of a boy- from his birth to the time when he qualifies for the college. It’s about all those little moments which we all have lived and even forgotten about.
I have read some of reviews in which the people have actually criticized the book too much. I mean give the author a break.. He has gone out of his comfort zone (I mean Love Stories) and written all together a different story and it’s pretty good actually.
All those moments about your first day at school, about wanting to have that toy or bicycle which you eagerly want but can’t have, your first crush and watching the movie in theatre all by yourself.
This book is all about those little moments which you spent in school with your friends and if you really won’t mind going back into the past and remember those moments then please do read the book. You won’t regret it but if you are someone who is looking forward to one more love story from Ravinder Singh then please refrain yourself from reading this book. Because it’s totally not the book for you.
A nostalgic trip down memory lane. Far far better from the author's previous works. Deals with the time of innocence to the journey of growing up. A boy's experience put in simple words which enriches the reading experience. All descriptions could be pictured, enjoyed and one could connect to them. Kudos to the writer and the editing team. A great deal of care has been taken to bring out a quality product. All will have an easy and fun time reading.
nicely arranged incidents of childhood. rite from the 1st bicycle to first crush and first movie in theater to 1st position in class, all have been placed very carefully and nicely. Not a great novel but a light one...which would bring smile to your face.
"It was my first day in school. I had been admitted to nursery class. My father had held my left hand in the warm safety of his right hand. All I did was to keep pleading with him to not leave me alone. Till then, I had never been away from my family."
If you are looking for a light read, which would end up in bringing a smile on your face, then this book is for you.
The author has narrated his childhood events in a series. While reading, I too had a lot of memories popping up from my childhood days.
School days are golden days in almost everyone's life. Different stages of schooling involves different kinds of life lessons, experiences, etc. The feelings of what a child goes through when he is growing is captured well.
If you are going through a lot of stress and want something to read, this book can surely help.
I read this book long ago but read it again in lockdown !!? Ravindra Singh is a really good story teller and he performed his job very nicely here too. While I was reading this book it took me to my school days. The most of the events are somewhere very familiar experiences of all of us when we were kids. But sometimes the repetition of sentences makes the story little bore. But I surely enjoyed it !!!
This book is about the true real-life incidents, golden memories and experiences in author’s life during his childhood and school days.
Everybody can relate to in one way or the other…Written in easy language which adds to its beauty.
First Day at School, About his Family, Beautifully description about the City he was born and his house, Fear of going to the hospital, his exploration for the first time in Photo Studio, Protective for his sibling, his innocence, and curiosity for knowing how he was born, the quest for solving mysteries in his life, his obsession with ink-pen, his dream of having a bicycle, his signs of growing up, travelling for the first time in public transport due to change in school, his first crush, his first movie at the theatre, his annual day preparations, his first love, his parents sacrifices for his education, his depression, what brought about positive change in him, his competitiveness, and how his life shaped up after his school days.
I loved these parts in the book very much – where he quotes talcum powder applied on the faces with mom’s handkerchief to make him look fairer, Doordarshan TV channel being the only source of entertainment compared to many channels which are offered nowadays and his parents asking him to make friends on basis of people’s mark sheets which are true and relevant in our childhood days as well.
It takes the readers on a beautiful, innocent, crazy, curiosity-filled and memorable days of his life where life was a lot simpler than what it is today.
Like It Happened Yesterday is a wonderful and fictional journey through Ravinder Singh's childhood. From vaccinations to final exams, the book is filled stories that almost all of us can relate to. The book is popular in metropolitans and B-towns alike.
Like It Happened Yesterday takes you through a series of first times, both good and bad. You might find yourself getting lost in your own childhood adventures. Be it the first day of school, the first time you lost a tooth or the first time you made a paper boat – you'll love the warm cozy feeling that engulfs you when you turn the pages of this book.
The author indulges us with the memories of his childhood, growing up in a small town and shows us how the most mundane things can be magical through the eyes of a child. Take a trip down memory lane with this good read, it's a great companion for a lonely bus ride. At the end of it you will probably feel like your own childhood just happened yesterday.
This is the story of Ravinder. From his choldhood till growing up. Nicely narrated and written. I did not loose interest even for once.
The reference of an old studio with white umbrellas inclined at different angles. These memories are so nostalgic. I remember going to them as well as a kid and getting myself clicked. Also dad’s luring their kids with frooti, I totally get that. Only that frooti is not Rs 3 drink anymore 😜. I totally related to wiping the leakage of my ink pen in my hair but I was still not allowed to drink tea even after class 6. And ‘the power of chapter 10’. OMG... I just cant stop laughing. . It is really true that when we were kids we always wanted to grow up and now, we just want to go back to those times when our only concern was to pass in our exams. Recommended.
I have only one word for this book "POOR". I think any Ravinder Singh fan who must have read this book must have seriously lost any respect he/she had for him. There is not much to expect from the story, no thrill,No big heroic work. The flight of excitment I got from reading the back page of the book had crashed after reading the first 2 chapters. There is no effort on the authors side to make this book interesting. I had to drag myself to read the chapters. This book is a waste of time, money and paper. I sincerely hope that both the publisher as well as the author realize what a mistake they have done by allowing this book to be published and come up with a much better book to restore their reputation.
Purchased the ebook in 2013. But had a chance to read it only last week. Not sure if it's a real story. But enjoyed it except some areas. May be he is trying to be genuine which is a quality for writing a biography. He is good at narrating and attention-to-the detail. Ex: Narration of Mahabharat intro speech of every episode will take you to the mid 80s. I feel the book is cut-short and I wanted more throughout the school life. At some point in time, I felt like reading my own diary. When I was reading exactly 46th page, I saw some negative reviews on goodreads.com. Keeping them aside, I moved further. Ending of the story is a typical Indian-Masala type. Finally, I enjoyed reading it.
this book reminds me of a quote by f.Scott Fitzgerald.it goes like this," That is part of the beauty of all literature. You discover that your longings are universal longings, that you're not lonely and isolated from anyone. You belong".. we can relate to it completely.. and very few books does that. it gives a nostalgic feeling from the beginning to need. A must read by every 90's kid.
Utterly disappointing. Immature writing, no story. The message the novel is trying to convey is commendable but the author fails to deliver it miserably. Its time ravinder singh starts writing stories which are not inspired from his real life and put the thinking cap on and come up with some interesting stories.
As the writer of the book is Ravin, loved the book. coz he is my favourite. luv u Ravin....... but i felt that the book was quite boring on some parts. still good, simple, sweet and would bring a smile on face.

Okay, why a Ravinder Singh book? For a person, who is postgraduate in English Literature, who has read a lot of thought-provoking books, books about serious issues, about deep and diverse topics; evocative, informative, realistic, and witty books (okay I am done with adjectives 😝); what is the point of reading a simple book, written in simple vocabulary, just a memoir of an ordinary life. Yes, I thought like this too. That's why this book remained unread on my bookshelf since 2013. This was the year when I read Ravinder Singh's masterpiece 'I Too Had a Love Story'. Like millions of others, I too was moved by that gripping and heartbreaking story of Ravin. So I bought two other books of him. The second book, 'Can Love Happen Twice?' disappointed me (in comparison to 'I Too Had a Love Story'). So this book I kept away reluctantly. And now when the whole nation is under Lockdown due to Covid-19, I am slowly turning into a social butterfly. Facebook is always in active mode on my mobile phone. The thing I like most is going through Facebook stories. Ravinder Singh is very active in that matter. You can see his 15-20 updates daily. Most of the stories are about re-telecast of Mahabharat on DD National, and a lot of people tagged this book humorously in Ravin's stories. So I was curious and decided to give it a shot. And man, I kept laughing during most of the time while reading the book. The book is Ravinder Singh's account of his life from his first day in prep school till his 10+2 board exams results. There's nothing awe-inspiring or charismatic about this book. It's easy-to-read, comforting and entertaining book. References to Mahabharat were really hilarious. It's a nice break between heavy, thoughtful books. When your head becomes heavy after reading some insightful and intense books, go for this kind of books. It's like watching a simple movie. I liked it because it made me laugh. P.S. Don't expect something great from this book. It can only take you back to your school days.
The book is a part of author’s own life story. The childhood, first day of school, school shift, grade 10 and then the first love forms the whole story. Its enduring how author takes you back to his childhood and makes you remember yours. It is a delightful read that will stay for long. 📚 The book takes you on a ride of the most cherished part of everyone’s life :- the school and home memories with parents, siblings, friends and teachers. The cover of the book exactly describes the book. It would hook you up right away. 📚 It is written in an easy language and you dnt really need to stop n look at dictionary. I rate this book 📒📒📒.5 as it is a great pick specially when summer vacations ☀️🕺🏻💃🏻are around. You might want to revisit them which is a dream when you are a grown up. 📚 What I loved in the book? 1.Flow of the book. 2.All the topics chosen makes it a definite read specially for Indian descendant school kids and it will be an eye opener for students who study abroad. 3.Easy language and it’s relatable stories. 4.The author @thisisravinder power of words that transports you to your childhood and you remember your child like innocence once again which we somehow lose while growing up. 📚
Did you ever come across a book that enhanced nostalgia? Like It Happened Yesterday by Ravinder Singh is one such book. It brings back childhood days.
The story begins with Ravin crying for being left at the school away from his mom. He is angry with his father because he dropped him off at school, but he finds many others like him in his class. The author shares a detailed account of Ravin's tantrum, which is quite relatable.
The story is set in the times of Doordarshan. The story progresses through the early days of school and ends with the higher secondary board exams. Mr Singh discusses the curiosity of the young boy who wants to know about the birth of a child and grasps it for real. The mischiefs have been shared in detail, which makes you nostalgic. The exploration of the secrets and the struggles of the kid born into a middle-class family are shared vividly. By the way, there is one gruesome incident which might taint your nostalgia, but I am glad he shared as many times such incidents go unsaid.
This is a soothing and fast-paced novel. The writing style enthrals the readers’ curiosity. If you are looking for a light nostalgic read, you must try this book. You shall live the euphoria of adolescence through his words. I couldn't think of a better title because those days seem like they happened yesterday.
Has anyone ever asked you- what were the best days of your life ? That one point of your life you always wanted to go back to ?
Indeed everyone wanted to go back to their childhood days. "Like it happened yesterday" is a book on Ravinder Singh's complete childhood. From his days in Gurdwara's rented apartment, to his life in Guru Nanak public school, every incident is precisely described. All his notorious acts, his family background, his enjoyable days, his hard work to achieve first position, his first crush moment, his puberty stage, one of his terrible incident, everything is explained in complete detail.
This book surely give you a glimpse of your own childhood days, you would definitely relate to one or more incidents. Unlike "I too had a love story" and "Can love happen twice" , this book has not reached to the top bestseller list. But it is definitely a one-time read book. Happy reading !
