Donald Tyson is a Canadian from Halifax, Nova Scotia. Early in life he was drawn to science by an intense fascination with astronomy, building a telescope by hand when he was eight. He began university seeking a science degree, but became disillusioned with the aridity and futility of a mechanistic view of the universe and shifted his major to English. After graduating with honors he has pursued a writing career.

Now he devotes his life to the attainment of a complete gnosis of the art of magic in theory and practice. His purpose is to formulate an accessible system of personal training composed of East and West, past and present, that will help the individual discover the reason for one's existence and a way to fulfill it.

This book is only beginner in the sense that it's very accessible to virtually anyone interested in the subject with no previous knowledge of scrying required. The author doesn't focus on any one particular method but surveys each system, it's history, and its practical aspects in greater detail than most books on those particular methods would. His little chapters are packed with information. It's one of those books where you can tell the author is speaking from long experience, not just writing out the results of research into a subject as if it were putting up vinyl siding or installing a sink.

The first part of the work goes from a basic introduction to the art and its history to basic and advanced exercises and a ritual framework for working. The second part, which is the larger, reviews all the various methods from water, mirror, and oil scrying and dowsing to automatic writing and speaking. Brief mention is also also made of 'spirit possession' phenomena.

It's full of practical advice that could be very useful for someone either first trying to scry or even an experienced scryer looking to explore the subject further. There's usually a dearth of advanced books relative to the profusion of books for beginners. But for a 'beginner' book this one is very advanced and gives advice that would benefit someone already experienced. Despite being advanced in this way it is also very accessible to a beginner. It's one of those books where I found myself irresistibly highlighting and making footnotes and also launching further research into the history of particular methods. The author's research has been very thorough and his advice is excellent. There are a few things such as his geometrical projection center/circle ritual that I don't care for but that's just a matter of taste really. This is a most excellent guide to the subject, not just a beginners guide. I'd highly recommend it to anyone interested in the subject, beginner or not.

A very useful introduction for how to see things that aren't there.
When seeing things that are there isn't working for you, seeing things that aren't there can be just exactly what gets you unstuck.

A good introduction into scrying. Contains instructions for scrying in many different mediums, which provides the practitioner quite a bit of flexibility in their options for getting started.

The only reason I'm not giving this 5 stars is because of how discouraging the author's verbiage is at times. In a book oriented towards beginners, essentially conveying that 14% of people that try this are going to suck at it, 8% are gonna be passable, and 3% are gonna become competent due to natural affinity alone can be highly discouraging to those starting. Thankfully, many of the author's belief systems do not align with mine, so it was a grievance that was easy for me to overlook.

All in all, a great resource filled with good information to get you started. Just could have been better if he focused on emphasizing practice and persistence over sharing theoretical statistics meant to paint the skill as one that can only be wielded in full by those who won the spiritual lottery.

Very informative, but you must believe in it before you read this. I'm a witch and working on expanding my knowledge. This book helped me realize that scrying is not for me.
