This is a classic and excellent description of 20th-century scholarship related to the Psalms...gives us a new perspective by situating the Psalms in the historical context of the Ancient Near East. The first book in my Leten in-depth study of the Psalms.

This is a stellar introduction to form-critical methodology applied to the Psalms, but not as comprehensive as Gunkel's other text on the same subject.
