About the author

Gudipati Venkatachalam aka Chalam (Telugu : గుడిపాటి వెంకటాచలం) (1894–1979), a Telugu writer and philosopher, was one of the most influential personalities in the modern Telugu literature. Telugu is a language spoken by more than ten crore(100 millions) people and the literary interest of the people was at its height during first half of the 20th century.

Most of his writings were regarding Women, especially the kind of difficulties women encounter-physical as well as psychological-in the society, families from their near and dear ones. Chalam discussed how the women should encounter them. the themes of his writings, philosophical tinge in his writings blended with his writing style earned him unenviable place in Telugu literary world

సృష్టిలోని మాధుర్యం ప్రేమ అయితే
ఆ ప్రేమకి అసలు సిసలయిన రూపం శశిరేఖ..!
గుండెల్లోకి దూసుకుని వెళ్ళిపోయే
పచ్చి నిజం శశిరేఖ..!
చలం గారి ముద్దుబిడ్డ శశిరేఖ..!
చంచలం లాగ కనిపించే సంచలనం శశిరేఖ ..!
చివరికి చలనం లేనిది అయిపోయింది శశిరేఖ..!
పదహారువేల మంది తో ఉన్న కృష్ణుడు దేముడూ, ప్రేమ మూర్తి.. అయితే..
ప్రేమ తో నే చివరి వరకూ బ్రతికి ప్రేమతోనే చచ్చిపోయిన
ప్రేమ తో నే కడవరకు ప్రయాణం సాగించి
ఆ ప్రణయ ప్రళయంలోనే జీవితాన్ని ముగించిన దేవత కాదా శశిరేఖ..?!
ప్రాణానికి ప్రాణం అంటూ ప్రేమించిన ప్రేమ

అసంపూర్ణ మనసుల మనుషులతో ఇమడలేక
అర్ధాయుష్షుగా వెళ్ళినపోయిన సంపూర్ణ వ్యక్తి శశిరేఖ..
కాకిలాగ వందేళ్ళు కాదు..
బ్రతికిన అన్ని రోజులు హంస లాగా
ఠీవితో బ్రతికిన రాజ హంస శశిరేఖ..!
కోల్పోతే తప్ప ఆమె ఏంటో అర్ధం కాలేదు ఎవ్వరికీ
విలువయిన వజ్రం కదా ఈ శశిరేఖ..!
రోజుకి ఒకరిని ప్రేమించమనే
సందేశం కాదు ఆమెది..
పవిత్రతకి అర్ధం
శరీరానిదా మనసుదా

ఎంత అర్ధం చేసుకున్న వాళ్లకి అంత..
ఎలా అర్ధం చేసుకుంటే అలా..

ఎవరెలా వెలేసినా..

ప్రేమ అంటే హంగులు ఆర్భాటాలు ప్రదర్సనలు.. అంతేనా..?
వంపులు సొంపులు కన్నెపిల్లలు పదహారేళ్ళు.. అంతేనా..?
అబద్ధాలు నిరూపణలు పెళ్ళిళ్ళు పిల్లలు ఏడుపులు.. అంతేనా..?
ప్రమాణాలు కోరికలు బహుమతులు తళుకులు బెళుకులు,, అంతేనా..?
ఇంతే తెలుసు కొందరికి..
అయితే వీరికి..
చలం గారి అచంచల మూర్తి
హృదయవాసిని ఈ శశిరేఖ..
పరిచయం కావాల్సిందే..!

I've read Chalam's Maidanam a couple of years ago and loved it. So I was looking for more of his works and found a set of his novels in a bookstore recently. The first of those I read was Sasirekha.

Sasirekha is the story of a woman and her love for 3 different men at 3 different stages in life. Chalam explores the concept of love at different stages of life so beautifully. As a teenager, she's attracted to Krishna who praises her and worships her like a deity. Once she matures and grows into an adult, she falls for Sundar Rao who comes across as an intelligent man with clear views on everything in his life.

However, she can't forget Rama Rao who she loved as a kid and can't help feeling drawn towards him when she bumps into him at a stage when she has no love left for Sundar Rao.

Chalam takes us through these phases of her love explaining us the complexities in her mind and her thoughts towards love, marriage and society. Sasirekha has least regard for a society that doesn't give the choice of love and marriage to the woman. She detests the fact that a woman is judged by the relationships she maintains with the men in her life.

Chalam also critiques the Brahmo Samaj a bit in a subtle manner. A question which I always had - if Brahmo Samaj was as radical and open as suggested by most Bengali literature of the day, how come it didn't spread wider? Why didn't it impact many more thought leaders? Chalam answers these questions to an extent.

He illustrates the difference between a man's love and a woman's love through situations, dialogues and his own commentary. Loved it totally!

New thoughts on women and freedom. Can relate it to present day but surprised by the fact that the author was thought this way in those days. Food for thought. Good one.

I was amazed with this book because having that type of ideology at that period of time is very difficult because the surrounding around doesn't educate you at all whoever knows telugu you should definitely try reading this
