This beautiful pictorial volume provides a lucid, scientifically accurate introduction to the subject of how atoms are arranged and interconnected in molecules and crystals and to the way in which the geometry of this organization accounts for some of the properties of substances. The authors are Linus Pauling and Roger Hayward. Professor Pauling’s clear, authoritative discussion of molecular structure is illustrated by a series of fifty-seven full-page drawings, reproduced in full color. These drawings were executed by the distinguished scientific illustrator, Roger Hayward. By considering a variety of substances the author and illustrator suggest the many ways in which atoms can interact, and emphasize the significance of molecular structure to life. The book’s precise explanations and concrete representations of molecular structures clarify the meanings of abstract chemical formulas and convey insight into how the architecture of molecules can account for such diverse properties as hardness, color, density, and nutrient or toxic qualities.
Great illustrations and some very interesting info. Not for everyone, because bond lengths, angles, and resonances are discussed deeply (and may put some to sleep). Such cool drawings though.
