Who buys a cottage in a New England fishing village on a whim? A stressed-out, twice-divorced romance writer and single mother looking for a fresh start, that’s who. Despite what my besties say about my three-year dry spell, I’m not looking for a man. Or drama. Or sex. I’ve got enough on my plate with writer’s block and a daughter who refuses to grow up. Community. That’s what I need. Unfortunately, it seems the universe has other ideas. Either Chatemup, Massachusetts, has a serious shortage of single women, or I’ve become a hot mess magnet for the male species.

At least I’ve found one funny, good-hearted friend: fish peddler Declan Miller, my brainstorming adventure buddy who stirs my creative juices. I’m his Writer Girl. He’s my Dimple Dude. Just scruffy, granite-chested, deep-voiced, ex-military brawn who happens to be—oh, Nicole, what are you doing to yourself?—stoking a long-neglected fire without even trying.

A self-confessed hot mess, divorced single dad Declan is too old for relationship games. Not interested. Same here. So why do I keep thinking about him? Preferably naked. Because I’m a hot mess, too? At least he’s inspiring me to write. If only real life were like one of my novels. At least then I’d have a better idea of how this was going to end.

“If only real life were like one of my novels. At least then I’d have a better idea of how this was going to end.”

What to Expect:
➼ Mature MC’s
➼ “Just For The Summer”
➼ Author Working on Her Novel
➼ Both Divorced with Kids
➼ Friendship/Found Family
➼ Finding Yourself
➼ Small Town
➼ Slow Burn
➼ Dual POV

For those who have recently been through a divorce, I think this could be a very cathartic read. Starting over is never easy, but putting yourself out there and making space to allow new people to enter your life can be even more daunting. Declan was a little old for my taste honestly, but he was a perfect fit for our FMC. I loved their journey as they transitioned from strangers-to-friends-to-lovers. The pacing of their relationship was perfect as it gave them both time to grow on their own first and open themselves up to the possibility of finding love again.

My favorite thing about this book was the beautiful portrayals of friendship and found family. Quality friendships in adulthood are so special and rare, but she was blessed not only with long lasting friendships but also with new friends that felt like family. Her relationships with her mother and her daughter also felt very relatable. She was desperate to leave the town where her ex-husband lived, but felt guilty leaving her aging mother behind and at the same time she was also struggling to create healthy boundaries with her daughter who took for granted that she would always be there to bail her out and fund her lifestyle. In life there are so many things that pull us in different directions, so many things that we feel responsible for, but there is a point where we all must take care of ourselves. It can feel selfish to do so, but as they say, you can’t pour from an empty cup.

Ultimately, I felt like I wasn’t the target audience for this one, but it was still an enjoyable read. I would definitely recommend it to those who prefer a more mature romance or to women who are recently divorced. There was a lot about Nicole’s journey that I found very inspiring and it’s always good to be reminded that it’s never too late to start over. 🖤

Hot Mess Summer is my first Melissa Foster book & I'd definitely try another. I liked the single parent, small town trope & the premise, but there were just too many side characters for me and the majority didn't add much to the story. 3 stars.

This book was a breath of fresh air; it was light-hearted even though there were some tough discussions, and there were so many laugh-out-loud moments and I didn’t cry once…okay, I did tear up but they didn’t fall so I count that as a win since I’m always balling my eyes out with one of Melissa Foster’s books.

ARC REVIEW (thanks NETGALLEY!)

I have to dnf at 30%, is this an autobiography?
This read like a manuscript and I didn’t care for anyone. Nicole and her besties go to her beach house she’s bought on a whim. She’s a romance author and is having trouble plotting her new book. Every person she meets wants to know her marital status and sexual history? Her and her girl crew hang out doing beach shit with a bunch of senior citizens who give off major swinger vibes. She’s picking up dudes left right and center even though she’s not all that hot and doesn’t care. Declan; mmc pops around at these old people parties and they commiserate on how awesome it is to be single. There was just so much extra fluff conversations I didnt want to read about.

I will begin my review with the dedication Melissa wrote in her book because this has a BIG INFLUENCE on the book itself. "For anyone coming out of a relationship and wondering if you're enough. Don't wonder. Believe. Take time to heal, rediscover yourself, and create your happiness. Your vibe really will attract your tribe." You see, Nicole, the FMC in this story, is twice divorced and, at the spur of the moment, decides to buy a cottage in Chatemup, MA, where the story takes place. She heads there with her two best friends, searching for her muse because a writer can't write if her muse isn't talking to her...right? During their time there, Nic finds her tribe and a special man even though she has sworn men off. It just goes to show that maybe, just maybe, the third time is the charm. 😉

I absolutely loved the friendship Declan and Nicole began after their "Meet-Cute," and the nicknames they had for one another were endearing:
Adventure Buddy
Writer Girl
Dimple Dude
and a couple of others.

This was a slow burn, but believe me, it was worth the wait. Declan's dirty talking was some excellent foreplay for what was to come.

I recommend this book to Adult readers who enjoy STEAMY Contemporary Romances, Romantic Comedies, Small Town Romances, or Friends to Lovers Romances.

Happy Reading!!!

Quickie DNF Review

I wish I could say that this was a good romance but it's not a romance, not in the traditional sense. For those that haven't read it, know that it's a WOMEN'S FICTION I haven't really seen any reviewers mention this at all, and it wasn't marketed as Women's Fiction which actually makes me lose respect for this author. One thing that drives me nuts the most is marketing a book to the wrong audience and not being honest about your book. This was marketed as a romantic comedy but in reality it's not really. Sure it had some funny moments but no more than her other books and the romance is way less focused than what we usually receive from this author. So I decided to DNF this one. I don't read Women's fiction unless it's very well done and I KNOW beforehand. And expect a very slow burn lackluster type of romance, this was not what I was expecting but after a whole week of forcing myself to read this, I am realizing I feel burned by this book and I can't in good conscience give this book a high rating when it didn't work for me at all and y'all that recommended this book knowing I don't do women's fiction but told me I would love it anyway, please be more mindful in the future of what my reading preferences are. I will read more of the Whiskeys from this author but other than that, I am not sure I want to stick with this author anymore. But we shall see.

Saw this ARC as a “read now” on NetGalley & finished it in a day. I fell in love with all of the characters (which, I’ll be honest, I occasionally had a hard time keeping track of) and the cozy atmosphere of the whole book. The girl scout cookie scene had me literally lol’ing. I didn’t know how I’d feel reading a story with MC’s in their late 30’s and 40’s, but I thoroughly enjoyed it much more than I expected to. Fans of Tessa Bailey, Lucy Score and the like, this one’s for you.

Nicole and Declan

Nicole Ross has been divorced for three years, but for some reason still felt like she was living under the dark cloud of her ex and his new girlfriend. Nicole has a good life, great friends, and excellent career writing romance novels and a wonderful daughter and mother that she is very close to, but she felt like she needed a change. That change was a wonderful little cottage in a beautiful sea side New England village called Chatemup.

Nicole’s ex always made her feel like she had to be someone besides herself, and when Nicole and her best friends helped her to move into her summer cottage in Chatemup, Nicole decided she would be herself. Her Chatemup uniform was daisy dukes, a tied up shirt or a crop top, her short boots and she let her hair go wild. That seemed to be a magic formula, because suddenly men were coming out of the woodwork to include the handsome self-described fish peddler.

Declan was too much fun and was always inviting Nicole on what he called adventures, and they had the best time. Both of them were supposedly wanting to avoid getting involved in serious relationships, that of course seemed be be problematic for them both.

Both Nicole and Declan carried burdens that weren’t their to carry and it kept them from actually giving their hearts in any meaningful way. As you you read their story it isn’t hard to see people you know or maybe even yourself in them. Melissa Foster did an excellent job writing her characters, as she slides into their stories with finesse and compassion. Her characters had life and love breathed into them with a gentle hand, and the story was both fun and poignant. Definitely worth a read with mild spice.

The story is sooo good!

It is kind of slow burn and it’s not my favorite trop but turned out I didn’t feel a slow pace at all. All because things were developed in a really natural way. I think it is a “can happen in a real-life” type of story.

Both of the characters are 40+ and divorced, so for sure they have their issues and insecurities. Step by step they dig into themselves trying to realize what they really want and - the most important part - if things can work out.

I could relate to both of them while reading and it felt just right. Never had so many highlights in one book!

I enjoyed all the characters in this book. Nicole and Declan are so real, so warm 🥹

But also my heart belongs to Claude (the reason he is grumpy just amazing ❤️ iykyk ) and for sure the hot couple that still have spicy nights (hope I can be the same at their age 🤣 )

Plus extra star for mentioning book boyfriends, motherhood troubles, and That Scene from Dirty Dancing. Melissa Foster just had me at that 😆

Thank you NetGalley and Montlake for opportunity to read this book in exchange for an honest review.

Chatemup? Really? I know what this author was going for and Lucy Score, she is not.

Ok I have several gripes about this book but namely the FMC is 38 and the author makes that out to be ancient for some reason. Like she’s decrepit and on the shelf. Wtf?

She also talks a lot about her pre-pregnancy body - which was 20 plus years ago. When she was 18. She refuses to wear a bathing suit because of it. Not to over generalize but 18 year old bodies tend to bounce back. Especially for a woman who seems to be running 3 plus miles minimum a day. And one who wears nothing but cut offs. I would very much expect this of a woman who had a baby 5 years ago. Hell, even a decade maybe. But 20 years? Nah.

Then there’s the story. Yikes. There’s a lot of weird and tragic thrown at the wall to see what sticks. It doesn’t mesh well with the overall tone of the story. Like the MMC and his ex’s tragic backstory. It felt all wrong in the tone of the rest of the story. And the writing wasn’t anywhere near deft enough to convey that kind of emotion. Or really any emotion.

This was a total miss for me.

Writer Girl & Dimple Dude!!

This whole story start to finish is one giant fun filled adventure. So many great laughs and a mature couple story that you won’t want to miss.

Nicole Ross bought a summer cottage in Chatemup, Massachusetts. As a romance writer she needed to get away and find her muse again.

“I’m not picking up guys. I swear, coming to Chatemup has made me some kind of hot mess magnet.”

Declan is a large part of this small community. A handsome older man with a outgoing adventurous personality.

This is a slow burn wonderful romance that just keeps the pages flying. So many quirky characters and dialogue that is laugh it loud amazing.

This is my second book by this author, and it's basically the same book. Not much of a plot really. Lots of introspection, detailed descriptions of daily life, casual conversations between a large cast of characters, what people are wearing or ordering at restaurants. It felt like I was reading someone's diary, where every mundane day-to-day encounter and activity is dutifully recorded. I'm obviously in the minority on this as most everyone else in the world seems to have loved it. Maybe I'm just not the right demographic for this kind of romance.

4.5 STARS | HEARTWARMING, yet STEAMY as HELL! I literally enjoyed this romance and the MMC and MFC were in their 30’s - 40’s age! Don’t usually see that in a romance often, but was a plus! HOT MESS SUMMER tells the story of Nicole buying a cottage and spending her summer at Chatemup, Massachusetts. As a single mother, and divorced twice, it’s a hot mess for the male species for Nicole once she arrives. That is she found a good-hearted fish peddler Declan Miller, her adventure buddy or her Writer girl as he calls her! They’re both hot messes, and they will spend a summer together full of friends and romance in-between. A sweet, but sexy romance to read for the summer!

I got to chapter 19 and stopped. Why? The heroes life is a hot mess so he proposes to be just friends and the heroine is discussing another guy with him. This is not a romance to me. Seems more like a women’s fiction story and I’m just not interested in Women’s fiction. I’m still rating it a 3 star because it’s nothing against the writing, the story just headed in the wrong direction for what I like to read.

I received this book for free in exchange for an honest review. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.Set in the small town of Chatemup, Massachusetts, Hot Mess Summer tells a light-hearted and heart-warming story about love finding you when and where you least expect it.

The story introduces Nicole, a twice divorced bestselling author. At the start of the story, readers learn of her split moment decision to purchase a cottage in Chatemup where she plans to spend the summer. She hopes to regain her writing mojo while making new friends. Now, Nicole declares she is not interested in a relationship, and neither is she looking for love. However, fate laughed in the face of her declaration by placing Declan, who also was not looking for a relationship, in her path.

I had so much fun reading this one. Foster did a wonderful job in creating the perfect balance of humour and serious moments. Nicole and Declan's chemistry leapt from the pages. I had a wonderful time watching their relationship move from friends to lovers. Despite their issues and insecurities, all could see they were perfect for each other. While they may not want a relationship, they could not deny their connection. Their interactions were fun and intense. Prepare for some laugh out loud moments. These two will have you rolling with laughter in no time. I especially loved how he helped with her brainstorming sessions.

Hot Mess Summer delivered a different vibe from what I have come to expect from Foster. First, the main characters are older (the heroine is 38'and the hero 48): and the romance is a slow burn. Yes! You read right, slow burn, which is not the norm for Foster. Despite her deviation from the norm, she did not disappoint. In true Foster style, she gives her readers a story filled with small town charm, delightful characters and a sweet and passionate romance.

Hot Mess Summer is a story of self-discovery, healing and the creation of one's own happiness.

Ava Erickson and Aaron Shedlock narrated. This was my second experience with Aaron's narration and my third for Ava. They did a good job portraying Nicole and Declan. Their tones were pleasant, their pacing blended well with the flow of the story, and they gave the characters life. Although one could differentiate between the male and female voices, their tone sounded the same for both narrators. This review was originally posted on Totally Addicted to Reading

Thank you to Montlake for the ARC!

Romances with mature heros/heroines usually tend to be somewhat flat and sometimes even a little boring. But, not this one.

I was rooting for Nicole and Declan from the start. Nicole had been dealt a tough hand in life, so had Declan. And while they were drifting through life, they somehow encountered each other. What I loved most about their relationship is how it evolved so naturally. When Nicole needed a friend, that's what Declan was to her, and vice versa. But, when they were both ready for their relationship to progress, it happened so organically, that you knew it would turn into something special.

This is definitely going in my re-read list! ;)

P.s. Still not a fan of Mackenzie.

This book reminds me of the Melissa Foster writing back to the Seaside series—a quirky, fun read. Nicole is setting out to find herself again after the divorce. She buys a cabin in Chatemup, MA, and takes her two best friends for a summer adventure. A stranger in this very small community who is embraced quickly and shows her what she is missing in her life.

Declan is a local in Chatemup; neither he nor Nicole are looking for anything other than friendship. Can they just be friends?

The banter, the nicknames, the friendships formed, building trust, and enjoying life all rolled up in a wonderful story that was hard to put down.

Thank you to NetGalley and Montlake; this is my voluntary review.

If I wasn't reading this for Book Club, I would have DNF'd after the first chapter 😬 too many side characters who don't contribute to the story & a meandering, boring plot. This author wrote about a 38 year old woman like she's geriatric, but somehow every man she comes across hits on her? It's a no from me dog.

Hot Mess Summer is a story of two people finding each other through a messy past. Nicole is a twice-divorced mother of a twenty-year-old (she is 38), and Declan is also divorced with two adult children (he is 48; kids are in their 20s).
They are only looking for a friendship, but ever since they met, sparks fly, but they are trying to repress them.
I like this book, but I didn't feel connected to it at first because there were numerous names of people in town. Nicole also had two friends with her in her little cottage that were quite a big of a presence in the first couple of chapters. It really felt like a woman's fiction genre because it was all about their friendship before they finally left the scene and the book focused on Declan and Nicole.
I really like how they got together, Declan being the initiator and telling her how he really felt, and what follows next are some very steamy encounters.
Overall, once they got together, the pages just flew by.
4 stars.

"Hot Mess" by Melissa Foster is a delightful romantic comedy that will leave readers laughing, swooning, and rooting for the quirky characters. With her signature humor and wit, Foster delivers a story that proves sometimes true love can be a chaotic journey.

The story follows Nicole, a twice-divorced romance writer and single mother, who impulsively buys a cottage in a New England fishing village for a fresh start. Determined to focus on her writing and avoid romantic entanglements, Nicole finds herself surrounded by a shortage of eligible single men in the town. However, she forms a deep bond with Declan, a fish peddler and ex-military dad, who becomes her trusted friend and adventure buddy. As their friendship blossoms, Nicole's once orderly life begins to resemble the hilarious chaos of her own novels.

Nicole and Declan's banter and undeniable chemistry create sparks that leap off the pages. Foster skillfully develops their relationship, blending humor, heart, and steamy romance. Readers will find themselves laughing out loud at their witty exchanges and feeling their hearts race during their tender moments. Nicole's relatable character and her journey of self-discovery add depth to the story, making her easy to root for.

Foster's writing style is engaging and addictive, with a perfect balance of humor, romance, and storytelling. The dialogue is sharp, and the pacing keeps the story moving at an enjoyable pace. The small-town setting of Chatemup, Massachusetts, adds charm and a sense of community, creating a rich backdrop for the unfolding love story.

"Hot Mess" is a light-hearted and entertaining read that captures the ups and downs of love and relationships. Melissa Foster's ability to blend humor, romance, and relatable characters makes this book a perfect escape for fans of romantic comedies. It's a story that reminds us that sometimes the best things in life come in the messiest packages.

It was a hard book to get into partially because of the amount of characters being introduced—it made the start feel like it was dragging when we were meeting the friends, then the people in the coffee shop, then the daughter, then residents of the place, then the mom on FaceTime, all in the first few short chapters. It felt like we were learning a lot of unnecessary facts right at the start.
There is some fun banter, but some parts feel unrealistic—and some of Nic’s thoughts feel like they’re thrown in at the last minute (like a sudden pang of missing her father, who had never been mentioned before). The character is also just trying a little too hard to be “quirky”, with comments about how different she is for doing normal things, like putting where she met someone in their contact info on her phone.
I know this book is supposed to be based on the author’s own experience, but it just doesn’t feel realistic that every single man in the town is suddenly trying to ask out Nic.
Having said all of that - after those first one hundred pages, I feel like it got a lot better, because it focused in on Declan & Nic specifically, with cameos from other characters but without feeling like they were another character too many in an overcrowded room. It was like they finally got the balance right, and I started to really root for Declan and Nic to get together! They had so many sweet moments, and so many scenes that got my hopes up for some spice - like Declan making a few comments about her body - and then the ACTUAL spice… absolutely loved it.
I also think the POV switching was done really well, where it changed to Declan only when we actually needed to hear his thoughts. That reads a lot better than needlessly switching just to alternate chapters - I liked that this was mostly one POV but changed when necessary.
Though the beginning was harder for me to pay attention to, I was a lot more interested once I got past it. The smut was hot, too.

Wow!! I need an adventure buddy! 5+++ stars

I swear this book mimicked my life in so many ways , I'm definitely in the Hot Mess club! This book allowed me to live out my own fantasies of moving to a cottage and finding myself after my divorce, loss of my brother and supporting a young adult who like Kinzie, needs to grow up and take responsibility for themselves financially.
This book was phenomenal! It had a great storyline, terrific characters, heat and heart! It has an amazing group of secondary characters and it tackles enabling, etoh abuse, loss and guilt! it also has grand adventures, healing, self discovery and wicked sexy times! The girl scout cookie adventure... Holy shoot I laughed out loud! I'd like to manifest & put out in the universe to send me a dimple dude, self awareness, love and the motivation to live life to the fullest!
Seriously, one wicked, amazing adventure in this book! Highly recommend read! If I could give more stars then 5 I would! I will be thinking about this story and characters for awhile, can you say book hangover!✌
I listened to the audio version of this book and it was good. I'm not a huge fan of audio books but I gave it a go. I still prefer reading but in this case audio was my only option. I'm not a fan of the way people do the characters voices, if your a girl a girls voice should be used same with men.✌✌

I am a huge fan of Foster and all her interlinked books; this was just as good as ever. In fact, I think it was possibly one of the hottest from the get go! This is probably because Nicole and Declan are older and very clear that they are both not interested in a relationship, but strongly attracted to each other. It works really well as a holiday romance which turns serious, I loved it.

Nicole is an author with a deadline and writer's block, so her impulsive purchase of a beach house to get her back in the mood is where she plans to spend the summer. Her friends come out to see she is settled and find it hard to leave, given the fun that is to be had in the community where her house is set.

As she gets to party with the oldies and spend time at the beach, Declan is often around and keeping the chemistry bubbling between them. It is fun watching them let their passion fly free, but only really half believing their ‘It is just a fling.’ statements.

I can see myself rereading this one just because it is so great to see these two people give themselves a chance to be happy!

Nicole and Declan are friends with a simmering flame between them. Neither of them is ready to take things further, so they are content as friends.

Being twice divorced, Nicole is not in any hurry to rush into a relationship, but her friends think she needs a man. She is a romance writer with writer's block and her friends are trying to get her block removed by hooking her up with Declan. Can Declan help remove her writer's block?

This group of friends is the best, they can laugh, laugh at each other, and cry together. I love the way their relationship evolves, and they finally give in to their passion. This story has the main characters in their late 30s and 40s and is more relatable.

I am a diehard Melissa Foster follower and try not to miss her books and this one is great. I highly recommend it.
