This is one of the worst books I've ever read. In fact, I just skimmed its various chapters for maybe 20 minutes. I didn't need anymore time to know it was a terrible book. You thought Eragon was bad, written by a 15 year old. Well, this book reads like a 13 year old nerd putting out whatever pops into their brain. No writer worth their salt would consider Saphira's intelligence a "subversion". Wisdom and a love of riddles is a well known feature of European dragons, even if the stories focus on the aggression. This guy goes on rambling about Asian dragons when they have no place and little derivation in Paolini's book. And that's just a tiny example of the semi-researched-brain-ramblings that you'll find in this book.

I recently purchased this book to see what Lois H. Gresh thoughts and insights were on the Inheritance Cycle. The Unauthorized Guide was pretty misleading to me. The writing was impeccable; it was very easy to follow and did present information in a creative way. However, when I started reading, I thought it would be about the first two books (Eragon and Eldest) and how she saw the books and the characters. It quickly turned into a book about how things designed outside of Eragon. Much was speculation and was often not connected or would follow a rabbit trail and only after reminding herself what she was writing she would go back to the connection. I was interested in the history of Dwarves and Elves, but it was too short. I found that near the end I was getting insight into witchcraft and covens which did not connect with Eragon, as very few of the character practice the magic/witchcraft she is taking about. This book would be good for people who want to know more about fantasy writing and the histories behind dwarves, elves, trolls, dragons, and fantasy.

It has a slow start but the moment I got into it the journey that it took me on I can not even put into words. Honestly while reading this book I got some ideas for my short stories (I was stuck to chapter 8 for a long time), because the writer will give you so many details about the fantasy and where it came from. Some of the things i was not even aware that my country is responsible for the creation of those creatures (witch white or dark).

If you truly love fantasy (any kind, from YA, Urban...) and Eragon or Eldest this book is a must read, because you will understand the two books better; and all the fantasy books that will seem so much different like your eyes were open for the first time. All the living creatures that you have read about in the books are described in here and how they have come to life in books or if some of them are maybe real.

I stopped twenty pages into this. It was horrible - she goes off on tangents that have absolutely nothing whatsoever to do with Eragon, some of which is stuff I really didn't want to hear either way. And besides...only half the series is out so far! Why is she trying (and failing!) to write an "ultimate" guide? Don't even bother cracking the cover.

I didnt like this book. The author made assumptions and guesses based on her knowledge and not the characters and authors knowlege. It was well written though.
