I know it's called Bizarre Adventure, but this is pretty weird even by Araki's standards. I have no idea what's going on anymore.

But I do want to find out.

I honestly don't know what the fuck I just read (I'm reading things out of order, admittedly, so I only vaguely know about the previous "Steel Ball Run" arc connection to this new addition to the "JoJo" canon), but I know I liked it. A LOT. MORE. NOW.

PS: Also, bless you, Araki, for basing a manga off of the 2011 Tohoku Earthquake. Give this man an award, I'm not even kidding.

Set in the same universe in Steel Ball Run and almost as parallel in the setting of Diamonds are unbreakable. We have a new JoJo with its own bizarre adventure.

Cant say anything about this yet.
Gotta read more.

Full JoJolion review: 5✰
Gorgeous art and a great way to revisit and revamp concepts, characters, and places from previous JoJo parts (you could probably explain most of JoJolion with JoJo callbacks).

In JoJolion almost all of the stands are quite simple, with no time bs or super convoluted powers that need some 6 chapters of "who shot johnny?". Up until the last 10 chapters or so, everyone has a stand that follows simple rules (JoJo's may be an exception because of the usual "make it up as you go" Araki style but it's not too bad). And so every fight is about finding the weakness of your opponent or getting away until you have a better match-up.
Because this is Morioh, we're back to more average people like part 4. There's really no fighting for "honour" or some "great cause", no "true man's world"... these are normal people trying to help their family members, get revenge on someone, get rich, etc. They do normal relationship stuff, they go to the hospital, care for a son, bet a golden Lamborghini on a beetle fight, you know? They feel much more like normal people than living allegories or concepts, which is what I felt about many characters of previous parts. One thing is not better than the other but it sure is a refreshing change.
Additionally, it's nice to see JJBA take on other types of more mature themes. No don't worry this isn't "everyone has a tragic rape backstory" 2.0, but it's like, there's references to porn, and we see/hear of some intimate bits of relationships. Also, this is probably the most nuanced JoJo when it comes to having a love interest. In parts 1,2 the girl was mostly a plot point or an afterthought, here genderbent Koichi is an important character with her own growth.
Loved the Higashikata family dynamics and lastly, Soft & Wet looks like a good boy and I lost my shit when it brutally murdered a woman with a shovel.

This is a story about breaking a curse.

We're introduced to the parallel universe Kira/Josuke almost immediately, and soon after get into our first Stand battle. Kinda. We don't see the enemy Stand yet, and the volume ends without a resolution to the fight. Indeed, the arc is named after [Soft & Wet] rather than whatever the enemy is.

I had a vague idea of Soft & Wet's power coming into this Part, but it seems more interesting than I expected. I can see how may work, then.

Yasuho is pretty cute.

Soft & Wet's first appearance is way cooler than I expected. Like, I mean his first panel.

(A review of JoJolion as a whole, not volume #1)

10 out of 10 across the board;

If there was any moment of doubt in my heart that JoJolion would be at all inferior to any of the previous parts then, my God, Araki you have proved me a fool once again. JoJolion is perhaps the pinnacle of fictional narratives in just about every respect; Araki's magnum opus.

The story starts about as obtusely as any JoJo story, but through recent events in the manga it's clear as crystal that every left turn the story takes was masterfully crafted from the genius that is Araki's mind. And that's why we all love JoJo right? It subverts our expectations in new and often uncomfortable ways. Araki asks: "what would the dynamic be in a big, Brady Bunch family of JoJos?"Through the strange, yet very real interactions between the protagonist Josuke and his adoptive family we learn more about his surprisingly complex character. I especially love the dynamics between Josuke and Joshu, and Josuke and Norisuke. Every character in the Higashikata household feels fleshed out and real, due heavily to Araki's writing style when it comes to character creation. Outside of the Higashikata household Yasuho is a fantastic supporting character as well, and adds a wholesome, "coming-of-age" vibe to Josuke's character progression. Their interactions are awkward, yet sweet and tender. There's a subtle scene where Josuke is daydreaming about buying Yasuho steamed buns and is practicing what he is going to say in his head, and this is the kind of thing that makes him relatable. Who hasn't had a moment like that?

The art. Oh god the art. It's beautiful. With inspiration from surrealist artists like Renee Magritte, Araki once again furthers his unique style.

The story is as wild as it gets, taking a lesson from each of the previous parts. Not even Berserk attempted to shuffle so many ideas at once: philosophical (fate, calamity, duty to your family, defining the self through relationships) mythological (Christian, Buddhism rebirth, Greek myth of Pygmalion) self-referential (Kira reborn as a hero by having Jotaro's kind mother, which is GENIUS "nature vs nurture")... etc etc.
I really believe Jojolion will be analyzed for decades to come. The supposed main villain's ability is perhaps the most enigmatic thus seen in the series, and is bound to be a source of further character progression for many of the main cast.

Perhaps taking direction from Part 2's "Pillar Men," Araki has introduced enigmatic "Rock Organisms" as a central plot point in Part 8. For the majority of the story thus far, the reader got small details of the Rock Organisms' nature at random sections in the story. A recent chapter has greatly expounded upon the already known details, and sealed the deal on Part 8 being Araki's greatest work. Without spoilers, the chapter introduced a lot themes related to the Rock Organisms, including their evolution, apparent evolutionary purpose, and most importantly, the concepts of Christian and Buddhist rebirth mixed with Greek mythology (Pygmalion).

Is JoJolion perfect? Yes; in my eyes it is Araki's most prodigious work and is anything BUT messy. Every detail feels incredibly intentional and ominous. Is it for everyone? Probably not, in the same way that works by Edgar Allen Poe aren't for everyone. JoJolion is incredibly thematically rich and rewarding for those who have an open mind and patience.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zQA-v... some mood music since we're heading back to Morioh!

There's a lot of nudity right off the bat... zoinks, Scoob. This is definitely really weird so far, but I'm excited to see what happenes! I know very little about Part 8, so maybe I can actually enjoy some JoJo without seeing spoilers beforehand?

Memes in this volume:

KAKYOIN UH UH KAKYOIN KAKYOIN UH IT GOT HIS EYES

Mista has left the chat

I did say there was nudity

BRUH

I see what you did there, Araki

Um... that's an interesting Stand name...

We also got our first "ora" but I couldn't find a pic of the exact panel here

This is a great entry into the JoJo's Bizarre Adventure series as its own book. It has most of the original aspects of the previous books with the concept of a "Stand" which literally means "Ghostly Ripple". In case you're wondering, a stand is a visual manifestation of one's fighting spirit. I say most of the previous books because it doesn't have the ability called "Hamon" anymore which means "Ripple", and was generated by a special kind of breathing to add some oof too your martial arts. Hamon is also the power of the sun and was used to destroy vampires in the first two parts, also called "Phantom Blood" and "Battle Tendency". The only character from the series that could use a stand and hamon was Joseph Joestar, a character present in parts 2, 3, and 4.
Now moving on to the correlation between this part "JoJolion", and "Steel Ball Run", "Stone Ocean". I have read both part 6 and 7 and I can give an explanation on why parts 7 and 8 are different from the rest. In part 6, the ending was quite a shocker and it was resolved in a way that the universe was reset, and it shows why some characters from the previous parts are similar and have the same names. Steel Ball Run is connected to JoJolion because the main character, also known as Johnny Joestar, is a known plot point in that after finding a wife and settling down she starts getting sick and loses her memories. In order to save her, he sacrificed himself and now the disease gets passed down through his bloodline.
The main character of part 8 does not know his name, and has no recollection of his life in general, and this lead to him being adopted by the Higashikata family (Johnny Joestar's descendants) which leads to his naming of Jousuke Higashikata. However, he finds out that his body is of two people one is Kira Yoshikage, who is a killer, and the other is unknown. After this, it's basically his journey as he goes through life withstanding stand attacks and trying to find out who he is.
Overall, I really enjoyed this book. That said, it does not get 5 stars from me because it's just not as exciting as parts 2, 3, 4, or 7. I would recommend this to people who like shounen manga, and I get that it's not some people's cup of tea so if you find yourself not enjoying it then I would recommend that you at least try the better parts of JoJo.

All JJBA is assumed to be five-star weirdness and there, Jojolion hangs tight with its kin. This shit's weird and more so than any part I've watched or read thus far, this shit's lewd too. Boners, titties, and an extra genital(??) are mentioned, sometimes shown, and in the case of Josuke, is part of his power set.

It's rare I'm supportive of mangaka perviness, so I didn't care for having a female character exist solely in the nude for a hundred pages, for reasons. Like, if we must linger here, then I expect male characters to be examined under the same eye. Of course, that did not happen. Josuke's booty shot is comedy. His boner, also uncomfortable comedy.

After eight arcs and several adaptations, no seasoned reader is surprised at this unequal objectification, but for newbies looking for an on-ramp, be warned: if you're sensitive to nudity or juvenile sexual humor, Steel Ball Run may be a better (albeit, flawed) starting point.

Otherwise, I found this introduction to be a little slow and underwhelming due to the nature of the antagonist. I liked the first hundred more than the last for that reason.

Araki is a master of suspense, much like Hitchcock, one of his idols.

This volume starts with an unusually compelling mystery involving an amnesiac with strange powers found in a sinkhole near bizarre rock formations.

At first its merely odd, but soon the heroes find themselves trapped in a house of horrors fighting for their lives against a hidden assailant.

Araki also has a way of writing down to earth, practical characters who are blunt in their manner of thinking and acting. In this case, Yasuho stands out. She saves josuke multiple times despite her misgivings demonstrating her virtue. That and her relatability make her likable.

The mysteries have no resolution in this volume, and the danger is resolved in a cheesy manner, which is how it works out about half the time in JoJo. Nonetheless, the way Araki grips the reader and doesn’t let go is exceptional and beyond what most manga can do.

He never holds back on putting his characters into the worst situations and knows how to string along a mystery with a good hook and steady pacing.

Start of a new Jojo, but jumping back into a familiar setting...with a twist. We're back in Morioh, and some familiar names pop back up, only with new lives and faces since the reset of the parallel universe. As far as starting a new Jojo part goes, I'm not fully invested in this one yet for a couple of reasons: a) superficially speaking, I'm not big into nautical themes, so Josuke's design isn't the most aesthetically pleasing; and b) I only recently, after rewatching Diamond is Unbreakable, started to appreciate that Jojo part and the "cozy small town with a hidden murderer" vibes. I loved the quirkiness of the characters from that part, so it may be difficult for me to adjust to the same town with a completely different personality.

This volume, like every other introductory Jojo volume, sets up the bizarreness of the new part's premise well and introduces Josuke's stand immediately, so I'm curious to see where this strange amnesiac boy came from and how the familiar Morioh setting has changed from what we knew it to be in Diamond is Unbreakable.

Part 8 here we go!

This was such an awesome start! Art is gorgeous as always, no surprise here. The story is very intriguing, from the get go we are introduced to many mysteries, including this jojo having amnesia. Having a Joestar blood and carring Joestar legacy are integral part of jjba, it's very interesting to meet part 8 protagonist who doesn't know who he is and where he came from. Also we get to revisist beloved town of Morioh, I'm excited to see how things are at the little coastal town in the reset universe.

Yasuho is amazing second lead character, I'm looking forward to learning more about her.

The second half of the volume throws a big plot twist at your face! I don't want to spoil anything but as soon as I learn about //that// character I knew things would get real very fast.

The most underrated jjba part which is honestly just crazy to me considering how fun this part is. I'm convinced this is the most bizarre part (Haven't read part 9) cuz the characters are so goofy like even under jojo's standards, they're above the normal level of goofy. I love love love the antagonist and his stand ability, Wonder of U. Like woww how creative can Araki be? Imagine the ability to inflict calamity on someone who even THINKS of pursuing you. But of course, my slow ahh still don't understand how Josuke could defeat him. I don't really understand Soft & Wet's ability too? I know it involves infinity too .. similar to Johnny's? Wow, i gotta watch some youtube videos for this.

Overall, one of my top favourite jjba parts!!

A strange take on Diamond Is Unbreakable. DiU is my favorite Jojo part so I was excited to read Araki’s new take 20 years after the original. This one is weird as hell, but still keeps the small town mystery vibe. I really like this Josuke and I really like Yasuho who is just a lil cutie. The only issue I have is Joshu. Easily he’s one of the worst characters Araki has ever written and doesn’t deserve his father’s love or a better haircut.

Will keep reading though! If you want to get into Jojo’s this is definitely not where you start. This is for veteran Jojo’s fans, but if you have watched the anime or faithfully read the manga, give this one a try.
