This month I chose to read “How to Find a Job on LinkedIn, Facebook, Twitter, and Google+” by Brad and Debra Schepp. The authors provide an overview of how each social networking site works and how each site can be used for job seekers. This book is divided into two parts. The first parts provides an in-depth look at LinkedIn including how it can be used, tips for using it, and examples of people who have used LinkedIn to find a job or hire someone. The authors go step by step for how to approach LinkedIn as a job seeker, including what job types are most often found through LinkedIn, what to avoid in your profile, how to approach your job search, what to post, and how to reach out to someone for an informational interview. The second part addresses Facebook, Twitter, and Google+. The information I found most helpful was about how to use Facebook groups for networking and job searching. The authors provide information on how to find groups, what to post, and how to engage with content in a professional manner. They also provide stories of people who have found jobs using Facebook groups. For Twitter, the authors provide examples of how to use Twitter to highlight your professional accomplishments and professional development. They also discuss how to “follow” companies and engage with companies that you might want to work for.

I picked this book because I am finding myself doing more job related tech help lately. I have helped many people set up a LinkedIn and discuss how to find a job online but I felt like there was a gap in my knowledge about the subject. I wanted to read how the authors describe the benefits of using social networks to find a job and what tips the authors had that I could share with learners. The most helpful advice I got from the book is the importance of clearly defining your goals before signing up for each site. In the future, before I help someone set up a LinkedIn, we will talk about their goals for using the site. The book also provided tips and tricks that I can share such as overused words on LinkedIn like “Team Player” and “Entrepreneurial”. The book also talks about how to market yourself if you are currently unemployed and how to talk about your experiences outside of the workplace when highlighting your skills. This is something I come across a lot, people who do not want to make a LinkedIn or engage in field-specific Facebook Groups because they are not currently employed. I will be borrowing some of the authors’ language to explain to learners how to use these sites as they are job seeking.

I would recommend this book to anyone who, like me, was struggling to get learners to understand the importance of social networks for job searching. The only downside of this book is the date. It was written in 2012 so much of the screenshots are out of date. Also, it touches briefly on Google+ which does not exist anymore so that part of the book is not helpful. However, much of the content is still relevant even though it may not look the same so if you can get past the outdated parts it is a helpful book for anyone helping learners build their social networks for job searching.

I've been aware already of how my LinkedIn & twitter acc'ts (& to a lesser degree Facebook) are key elements of my job hunt. But this book is further demonstrating the many ways LinkedIn can help in developing a professional online presence, job hunting, career development, pursuing business leads/contacts, etc.

I have never ever found a job through online job boards. I however, have never tried finding a job through online social networking. All the jobs that I have ever had have been from face-to-face networking and contacts. I am willing to try to LinkedIn and other social networks to see what type of opportunities are out there. Wish me luck!!!

The LinkedIn section was surprisingly useful; the other parts not so much. I already got a lead at NPR thanks to the stuff I learned, so the book proved its worth.

Not exactly what I was looking for right now, but this book definitely had a lot of good information. I will most likely take another look at it a little further down the road.
