The Men of Marionville #5

A Cat Named Hercules

Rate this book
New in town, Shiloh Rudy joins a group of civic-minded volunteers to better acquaint himself with his recently adopted community. It's a good way to make friends, network, and help make a difference, not to mention perhaps meet someone interesting—in a romantic sort of way. The one thing Shiloh didn't expect was a love to rival all others to come with four white paws.

Gale Widmyer is on his feet and moving forward after piecing his life back together following a series of wrong choices. The one bright spot in his existence, even in his darkest moments, was the fulfillment of his dream to become a veterinarian. Gale's making good on a promise to himself when an abandoned kitten leads him to Shiloh Rudy and a chance at the happiness he never hoped to have.

Laying the cornerstone for a developing relationship comes easy for Shiloh and Gale. But the wounds of the past often remain unhealed at their deepest point. A few careless words erect a wall of silence between the two men, one Shiloh has to breach if he hopes to win Gale back. But it will take more than apologies to win Gale's forgiveness and put old fears to rest. It'll take a cat named Hercules...

Read last year, but remember loving it! This section stood out:

His long legs were encased in snug, faded denim that showcased lean thighs. The soft fabric clung to the outline of his penis, snaked down to the left. Sunglasses hid his eyes, but nothing could hide the lazy, fluid way his body moved. He could fuck me any time, any place, any way.

Fuck yeah!

This had the word CAT in the title, which meant I obviously had to read it. From the sexy cover, I wasn’t exactly sure what to expect, other than some serious hotness and a little kitty thrown in. What I got was a bit different – this is a story of two men coming together because of a cat. New to town, the main character goes with his friend to a charity event and finds a stray kitten calling to him – concerned about the kitten’s well-being, the local vet arrives and the two fall in love with each other.

This main plot of this story revolves around one man finally being true to himself and his courage to finally live as the gay man he always knew himself to be. Through a few misunderstandings, they work everything out and have the kitten to thank for everything.

The sex was very tame and very vanilla – and no, there was no animals involved. ;) It was a fun and easy read, without the typical angst of coming out stories. The warnings read voyeurism and sex in public places – but I wouldn’t label either incident as such, so if you’re into that, this isn’t the book for you. Overall, a decent love story between one confused man and one patient man, who bond over their cat.

Out of four…
Overall Read: ♥♥♥
Sex Heat: ♥
Plot: ♥♥

This is a great book for a quick lazy afternoon read, or someone who is looking to venture into m/m without any of the “scary” parts.

Shiloh is new in town. Despite having a group of good friends to pal around with, he is lonely. He’s ready to settle down and try his hand at a long-term relationship. Especially after meeting Gale, a local veterinarian he meets after finding and adopting a stray kitten.

Gale, who is in his mid-30’s, has just recently come out of the closet after a painful divorce. He has never been with a man before, so he is hesitant to accept Shiloh’s advances. Their strong mutual attraction, however, cannot be denied.

These two have amazing chemistry both in and out of the bedroom. They are a perfect match. They adore each other just as much as they adore the feisty little kitty cat that brought them together. I hesitate to call this story “adorable” (although it is) only because it was also very, very hot. K.C. Kendricks not only lets us peek inside the bedroom, she also lets us peek right under the covers to witness all of Gale’s firsts in what are some very steamy love scenes.

Once I started reading, I could not put this one down! Loved it!

This Cat is Not in the Hat

This one is so sweet that you may have to go to the dentist after finishing it. Or, go out and adopt a cat.

Shiloh Rudy is new to Manorville, and during a volunteer day at a city green-up project he rescues and falls in love with a black and white baby kitten who becomes the catalyst for everything else that happens that day, and that month, to Shiloh. It happens that the project is also where Gale Widmyer, a veterinarian in Marionville, is volunteering, and after suitable introductions and inoculating moves involving men and beasts, the cat sort of but not quite falls to the bottom of the test tube like catalysts are supposed to do.

Gale has a secret, Shiloh is aroused and challenged by it, but Gale is confused and scared, Shiloh is willing to help him deal with it. All through it, the cat jumps over the moon, so to speak.

I absolutely loved this romance despite its predictable ups and downs. KC Kendricks brings in all the characters from the previous books in the series and expands the horizons of the small city's pretty influential gay community. More importantly, Gale and Shiloh help redefine the meaning of a "threesome" before it's all over.

This is a character-driven story with moments of miscommunication and distress over a pet that add the zing of angst to a plot that otherwise is just a gentle story about gentle men learning to be true to themselves and who they are. If you have been timid about reading m/m romance this is a good one to break the ice. Nothing scary here.

I am a big fan of Kendricks and I enjoy this series in particular. While this story was enjoyable, it wasn't as good as the previous ones. Something just wasn't clicking with me and I wasn't very invested in the main character which is probably why I didn't enjoy it as much as I usually do.

If you are in the mood for a sweet shorter story, yet still expect good plot construction and likeable characters, then this would be a nice choice. A pretty enjoyable read especially with the added cuteness of Hercules!

This story didn't work for me. The romance between Shiloh and Gale was to abrupt, undeveloped and emotionally cold. Sure Shiloh was crazy about Gale, but we couldn't state same for Gale.
